No, you're right about it always having been stats driven. By all rights this SHOULD be a sure thing. The entire history of the award suggests it. But, and here it is hard to tell if we are just in the midst of the maelstrom and so are just paying more attention, but it certainly seems that there is far more chatter and stupid arguments being made on this one than on any ROY race I can remember. It seems that Reke may have walked into a perfect storm of people still shocked he was picked over Rubio, of those still upset he turned out to be a PG rather than a SG, of coming out of relative obscurity (I guess -- how can the POY be obscure) and going to a small city franchise who was completley blanked out of National TV while his two opponents were being shown weekly. You can see everything trending against him in what should be an easy vote. It will be utterly ridiculous if he doesnt get it -- really the clearest travesty in the ROY I can remember since...not even sure I do remember the last one this bad. Be the 90s at least. But you can see how it could happen. The award, and maybe now more than ever with the internet, cable, twitter, etc., takes on political tones after a while. Its not about merit. Its about hype and popularity. And these lesser players seem to have machines behind them far beyong their games. Bothers me a little what that may say to Reke about Sacramento as a long time home if it is stolen from him.
I will be very relieved when he just gets this and this is over. You put up numbers like LeBron, you shouldn't have to sweat this crap.
