Tyreke Evans ROTY & 20/5/5 Watch

Just as an aside (that I can't even prove, because I'm too lazy too look it up): I'm pretty sure that the stat that has the most consisten correlation with winning the ROY is scoring. Over the last few years, I believe, the ROY has basically always been handed out to the top scorer of the rookies. Since Havoc leads all rookies (and is 16th among all players), I don't mind that too much.
Other food for thought: A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that, statistically (and in no other way, mind you) Tyreke was playing basically the exact same as Derrick Rose, only with better rebounding (and defense). He is shooting a little worse, averages a few more turnovers, but even those things are nearly dead even. Which is to say that our rookie is right now playing as good, if not better than the reigning ROY. How on earth can anybody pretend that there's even grounds for a discussion as to who should win this year. Mindboggling!

All this nonsense about Curry or Jennings winning ROY is just that, nonsense. There's no chance that happens. Curry, as good as he has been lately, still hasn't been playing as well as Tyreke, and Jennings just flat out can't buy a basket to save his life after his early hot streak. For what it's worth, I was listening to Grant's show on Thursday (almost never listen to it), and he said that every person he's spoken with, that has a vote for ROY, is casting it for Evans. Evans is going to win, and it's not going to be all that close.

Edit: At this point, all that's left to question is "will he average 20 a game?" He already has the assists, and very nearly the rebounds. Stats are a silly thing to root for (besides wins), but it'd be nice if his ROY season was mentioned in the same breath as Oscar, Lebron, and Jordan (coincidentally guys who all either have, or will have an argument for GOAT).

As an aside, to all those who try to claim draft position does not matter, was just looking at where the ROYs have been drafted throughout history. Get this:

ROY winners 1953-2009:
#1-#5 pick: 46
#6-#10 pick: 8
Outside Top 10: 4

In other words, you want the best rookie, find a way to get into the Top 5. The draft absolutely WORKS. Its been 21 years since a player picked outisde the Top 10 was ROY. In those 21years only 3 guys picked outside the top 5 were ROY (Damon Stodamire, Amare, Roy).
And how many have rings?

Gasol (not orginal team)
Duncan
Shaq (not orginal team)
David Robinson (look at Duncan)
Mitch Richmond (not orginal team, bench warmer)
MJ
Bird

That takes us back to 1980.

Didn't think points were going to be the problem.

Hope he can pick it up in the next couple games.
Yea, that game did not help him at all! He is gonna need a really good games from now on to get the 20 of the 20/5/5. They really put the clamps on Tyreke tonight. He did a pretty good job of finding open shooters but then he only got 5 asst! Oh well, hopefully he will do better in the next game!

I was hoping he would score 22-25 a night so the last game he wouldn't stress. now he needs to avg 20.2.....he still can. I just hope he doesn't end up having to score 32pts the last game of the year.

I wouldnt worry about it. As consistent as hes been all year and as many time as he gets to the rim i dont think he'll have a problem.

Getting to the rim wasn't the problem tonight, it was getting his shots to drop once he got there (and making FTs when he got knocked down en route).

FTs have always been a weak spot. Hopefully finishing is just about being rusty and it'll be back next game.

I sure hope so....

19.9/5/5 doesn't have the same ring to it.
19.9/5/5 will not get him to the company of other 3 players. There have been quite a few players that have just fallen short in one category or another. I am certain Grant Hill missed out on that company because of the 19.9ppg he had in his rookie year.

I wasn't really into basketball until the 2000s, didn't realize that Grant Hill was that close.

Just checked and he missed it by 6 points. Wow, that sucks.

I'm hoping that Tyreke has a REALLY good game in one of the upcoming games. Problem is, we have San Antonio, Dallas and the Lakers in that group.

I don't care how many Shots Reke takes in order to score 20+ points in all of the remaining games. He's been averaging a good FG percentage for the year anyway. He needs to do this 20-5-5 thing. All the other guys better clear out and let him go to work. I hope someone's talking to him about the 20-5-5 too and make Reke make the 20-5-5 as a personal goal for the season.

i like beno, but he shouldn't be the 1st option on O. Tyreke, take a jumper for once. tyreke shouldn't care about percentages, or the ROY. He should get the 20ppg for the fans

Evans is most certainly aware of what is needed for him to accomplish the 20/5/5 stat. The Kings official website has a stat tracker at the top of the page.

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
I think eveyone does, whether they say it or not.

I also think Portland has been maybe the toughest matchup for him all season long -- Battier of course, but that was one game. But Portland has it schemed right, they blatantly lack respect for our other options and are willing to cheat a much as necessary, and they have figured out that interior defense = winning and just absolutely insisted on having a big shotblocker (and two 6'11" guys) in there at all times no matter what fate threw at them.

And you throw in it being a long tough season, Reke never looking quite comfortable since the mugging, and the pressure from the chase, and its just tough right now. The shaky jumper has been as defining for Reke this season as the unstoppable to the basket game. It gives teams an out, and they are so scared of his driving ability, and so UNscared of the rest of our team, that they take that out every game. Sure Reke could toss up 20 jumpers a night in response, but its just not there right now. He could shoot 5-21 every night that way, and there just isn't much of that kind of selfishness to the kid. He's really going to have to grit his teeth and summon up a last burst to make this happen against good competition down the stretch. And I think he is going to be very very glad for this season to be over, take his two weeks of rest or whatever, and then head down to L.A. for his training montage. Relentless as he's been, its been a physically and mentally battering year for kid who can't even drink yet, and I'm sure he just wants to go lay down somewhere and sleep for a week.

George Hill rolled his ankle today against he lakers. He'll miss the rest of the road trip. Most likely the spurs will start Mason Jr. or Keith Bogans in his place. Assuming Tyreke won't be switched to chase around Manu, he should have a easier time than usual on defense.

Reke has stated before that Tony Parker is the hardest player he's had to defend so with Parker out with a finger injury, that helps too. An easier time on the defensive end should give Reke more energy for offense. Hopefully he has a similar offensive #s game like last time he dropped 32 on the Spurs. I highly believe Tyreke will get the 20 pts average. After all, he is a special player. He'll come through.
