Truncated articles

I'm now seeing most of the Bee articles being truncated when posted on the Kings forums and I suppose that this is to save space, yes?

One of the main reasons why I like to read the Bee's articles here in the forum is because the $%&*## dynamic/moving ads are eliminated when the articles are posted here in the ad-free forum, so, when the articles are posted, but truncated, then I am forced to go the Bee to read those articles.

As of late, the dynamic ads have not been bad--some movement, but then they're still; but, some of the ads in the past with incessant movement...UGH! ######! I can't stand them. One of the things that I love about the internet is that I can almost fully control the aggravating commercials (unlike the damn TV), but some of them cannot be controlled, no matter what I do (I use the Mozilla Firefox browser, which has a "block ad" feature--very useful, but on some ads...Macromedia, Real Player, etc...CANNOT be frozen, no matter what I click and that pisses me off ). I have a big folder next to my monitor to use in case there's tall, vertical dynamic/moving ads on the side of the webpage that just are incessant in movement, so, when needed, I prop up the folder to block the %^## ad.

I'm all for saving space, but not at the expense of exposing us to those aggravating dynamic/moving ads on the web pages of the Bee, or other sports pages.

Speaking of saving space, one thing that would help is the tendency of some posters of quoting entire posts instead of isolating the central point to which the new post would be referring to would be preferable, I think, than posting quotes of entire posts, followed by a brief commentary.

I was going to send a PM on this matter to V21, but I thought that I'd see what others thought about this issue by posting publicly. Don't get me wrong--I'm not signing sour grapes, as this forum is an excellent one in many ways.

It's not about saving space, I'd call it a personal request.

It runs fine for me but I guess that's because I have a fast connection.

For what its worth, I prefer reading the bee article here also. I don't like having to click the link to go over there, register, see ads etc.

I imagine there may be a consideration or legal reason to truncate the articles, and if so that's the way it is. On the off chance it's a style change, I'd like to request we get the whole article.

Thanks,

M5

You can get around the ads by using the NoScript extension to Firefox, which will not let a website use Javascript unless you give that site your explicit approval to do so. This will cause a lot of sites to break, so in return you get the minor annoyance of having to click on an icon to OK Javascript for sites where you want it to work. But it will eliminate almost all of those flash ads, which require Javascript to run.

Thank you

Fnordius, (can you explain your name? Just curious.)

Thank you--this is useful for not only me, but others as well and this kind of info is the main reason why I went public with this small issue. This will be useful with my little War on Ads.

On a deeper level, my little War on Ads is really a war with the corporations, far too many of whom are SO obnoxious with their marketing approaches in their efforts to jam down their obnoxious products down our throats, so I do make an effort to effectively limit their reaches into my own space and, for the most part, I've succeeded.

I will gladly add the NoScript weapon to my arsenal.

It's not about saving space. At this point, we're working on several different things. The Internet is changing, the media is changing, and how information is reproduced on the Internet is changing...

Bear with us. This is very much a work in progress, so to speak.

Remember that the content of the SacBee articles and anything presented on the internet is provided at a cost to the person/company providing it. SacBee recoups at least some of that cost by having advertisements on their website.

If people re-post the articles somewhere else, then fewer people go to the SacBee website to read them, meaning fewer people are viewing the advertisements and SacBee is getting less revenue.

There is a line to be drawn somwehere between posting snippets of articles for discussion and recreating the entire content of another site. It's perfectly within the rights of SacBee and other sites to attempt to protect their content, and it's also a responsible thing to do for KingsFans to respect the content of SacBee and other sites.

I have no idea what the "best" compromise is for this issue. Whether it's fully reproducing articles and providing a link and author information like this site has done for awhile, or requiring nothing more than small quotes be reproduced like other forums I've seen require, you shouldn't be surprised that there will be some restrictions on the reproduction of content.

Personally, I'm grateful for whatever I can get on this site. The ads are not intrusive at all, and yet everything here is provided for free. As a consumer I agree that the obtrusive ads of other sites are annoying. I have used some forms of ad blockers while surfing the net. I also use my DVR to fast forward through commercials on television. I do it for my own convenience and I know many other people do the same. But we should remember that the more people that bypass the advertisements that pay for the articles or shows, the more likely that the content providers will have to find a new way to pay for that content and make a profit. Many websites are already at a point where they require you to pay for things and the more we complain about simple, small ads, the more likely we'll get an alternative that is even worse.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

We're pretty sure the compromise we've initiated may be the way of the future.

As you've mentioned, one issue here is that if we insist on printing entire articles all the time, the Bee traffic will not reflect the real number of people interested in those articles and we could end up losing some of the coverage the Bee currently gives the Kings, especially if the Kings don't do that well this year.

Our aim is for this to be a good neighbor-type solution to a growing problem. We'll still be able to alert our members to good stuff out there and discuss it here while making sure the original site gets a bit more accurate gauge of traffic and interest in various articles.
