Tropical Island Music Artist Draft - FINIS

Linkin Park

Very few artists, IMO, can consistently mix and combine so many different elements of music like these guys. They can go from "One Step Closer" and "Crawling," to "In The End" and "What I've Done." and then slow it way down with "Shadow of the Day" and "Iridescent."

They've evolved and they've also stayed true to who they are. Great, great band.

I never even thought about Linkin Park, nice pick. Well since the commish rudely brought on the run of females, I guess it's time for me to take one since I am only now realizing that I have very few to choose from (to be fair there is a female in Smashing Pumpkins). I actually expected Brick to take her on me, but he went with my alternate route instead. So, my first female is

Pat Benatar

Pretty decent catalog of music for a round 10 selection I think. A few songs I wasn't a fan of, but she has some great ones.

And my favorite one:

In a move that will probably not get any votes, I'm taking Kate Bush.

One of the most successful and popular solo female performers to come out of England during the last several decades of the 20th century, Kate Bush was also one of the most unusual, with her keening vocals and unusually literate and complex body of songs

Yeah, she was definitely and obviously the alternate choice there for me. And really she even had more hits. A dozen deep at least and more songs in my catalog than does Jett. However just in going through things when deciding which way to go, for me her stuff felt a little more dated if you will, while Joan's seemed to be more elemental. That said if somebody had taken Joan before I got to her, Pat was going to be my immediate response.

Hell Is For Children btw.

Nice pick!

I had another artist down for this spot, but since the trend right now is picking female artists, i'll just go with the flow and select:

I just love a lot of her songs.

CRAP!!!!

Pick cancelled. Pick again upon fear of being spammed with Roseanne Barr porn.

And I hereby proclaim this trend of picking women dumb :p , as nobody thought any of them were good enough to pick at all for the first 100 picks, and now all of a sudden people are picking them with every pick. Most importantly including ones off my list. If you want a token woman that desperately, take Rebecca Black, but leave my poor beleaguered list alone!

Oh...good pick btw. :(

lol. Sorry, brick. She was always my first choice for female artist, and now i feel very relieved that I picked her.

You should be relieved. She probably would have been my first (female) pick. :D She has good rock roots.

There are also a few of her singing with Steel Panther. Although the audio quality is pretty bad (and she's tossed a few back by that time) she can still belt it out.

Since we're just about halfway through the draft and I didn't get to add in much explanation for my first few picks, plus I haven't added any youtube links, I figured I'd post a few now. I added a note or two on picks I haven't really talked about, plus one video for each. If you're going to watch just one of the ten, I'd pick the Lauryn Hill one.

01.11 - Nas
Listened to It Was Written a ton while coding in college, and only later found Illmatic, but that too was too easy to like.
02.06 - The Black Eyed Peas
Just too much fun music. Plus I can practice my Tagalog just a smidge.
03.11 - Lauryn Hill
One of my favorite artists. Combines a great voice, good rap skills, and thoughtful lyrics. She only has two albums, but she is probably at the top or tied for the artist I'd most like to hear new music from. I would have picked her first if it wasn't for the lack of quantity. But I decided I had to pick her early anyway.
04.06 - Genesis
;-)

i sent Henkel a reminder in case the pick stealing metalhead also forgot to send him a PM.

If he does not return we'll have our first timeout in about 4 1/2 hours and you can go ahead.

Alright, for my next two picks, I am going to take some blues based rock... blues in black and white...

I select:
The Black Crowes

Love the Black Crowes... blues rock at it's best... remind me of a modern day Led Zepplin...
Tremendous.

For the White part of my black and white blues... I select:

The White Stripes

I find the White Stripes to be just so, so explosive... They are like listening to an explosion of blues and hard rock music... raw, talented, inventive, only two of them (BTW, I am making an end-run on female singers/drummers who are members of a duo). They do a lot of blues covers and a lot of crazy originals... again, their music always pumps me up. Great stuff.

Hall of Famer
This draft is very interesting and enlightening. I have learned of singers I had never heard of and who are really good. I'm in a time warp being at least a generation (and maybe two generations) older than most of you so I lost track of what is popular at least 15 years ago. The older stuff has been adequate for me and has many emotional links. It's intersting how music becomes linked to events or eras of our life and I note that I'm not the only one who experiences this. In short, the music we love is linked to our life's passage.

Just the same, I love music and this stuff is great. You folks are having fun and learning of each other but I'm expanding the music I will listen to except hip hop. Who the heck is Nas? Made me go to Wikipedia. :) The unintended consequence of this draft is that I have gone back to writing music which is my passion. Note I didn't say I was any good. :( My absolute #1 "job" I would have liked was to be the trumpet player of Chicago. Now THAT must say a lot about me. I organized my first band when I was 13.

Thanks folks.

Glenn, I recommend the program called Spotify. You can listen to any album you want for free. That's what I've been doing for some of these bands.

On the other end of the music spectrum, I'll have to listen to a few days worth of classic rock before being able to do the rankings. I'm not complaining or anything, it's just that right now, I wouldn't be able to tell pretty much any of the bands apart.
