Tropical Island Music Artist Draft - FINIS

Time to go mainstream, I pick:

Blondie (1974-active)

Favourite Album: Blondie (1976)
Sample Song: do you really need one? still, my favourite is Denis

Realised I needed some hits on my island and Blondie is my favourite "pure pop" group. Obviously never put out an album strong enough to figure in an hypotetical 100 favourite records list but they sure have an impressive catalogue of killer songs.
Another great pick.

One of my favorite pop songs.

I'm honestly not sure if anyone else on this forum even knows this artist exists, but I'm going to take them anyway, as I'd be majorly annoyed if they were stolen by someone. They're not a normal pick per se, but I could listen to them all day. So many adjectives to describe them: Calm, relaxing, serene, haunting, thought-provoking etc.. My island would be far worse off if I hadn't got these to make me relax.

Scala and Kolacny Brothers

Originally a classical Belgian choir, they decided they wanted a more modern feel to their music a few years ago. They've covered many well known songs and the outcome, in my opinion, speaks for itself. They are amazing and fit a specific mood better than any other act I can think of. If you haven't heard them, listen to the videos below. There are plenty more on youtube.

One hundred (well, three at least) ways to go about this. Wavered a bit, but decided upon meeting my indie pop quota:

The Weakerthans

Memory will rust and erode into lists of all that you gave me:
a blanket, some matches, this pain in my chest,
the best parts of Lonely, duct-tape and soldered wires,
new words for old desires,
and every birthday card I threw away.

First Album: Left And Leaving
Favourite Album: Reconstruction Site
Why I Started Listening: I was actually introduced to The Weakerthans by a German band that had a shout out to them in one of their tracks. The idea to check them out was then put more in the front of my mind when a friend of mine wouldn't stop raving about them. We had a discussion on songwriters and after I mentioned that my favourite was Isaac Brock, he felt the need to convince me that John K. Samson was better. Well, he didn't quite succeed but it is really damn close. Browsing Weakerthans lyrics has become one of my favourite „need to kill time“ activities at any rate. The fact that the music itself is also pretty damn brilliant helps, too.

Nothing fits quite so well in a mix with Public Enemy as a little Scala and Kolacny Brothers Belgian choir music. :p

Hah! I knew it! I bloody knew it! And I was *thisclose* to drafting something else.[/rubsaltinwounds]
You, sir, have ruined my island. And you'd have gotten them in the 11th, and the 12th, and the 13th...I was figuring 17th/18th round because obviously nobody was going to pick them.

It's only a fictional draft, I can still listen to them in real life

Round 10... I'll go with Black Flag to close out the first half of my draft.

Influential 80s hardcore punk act helped launch the careers of Keith Morris (later of the band I'm continually forcing myself not to name) and Henry Rollins. While I'm personally partial to their early years, the first Rollins album, Damaged, remains perhaps the finest document of the hardcore scene.
Also: Wasted, Slip It In, Nervous Breakdown

My next pick...

Jewel

Love the voice and the first few albums. I don't know (or really care) if the later dance/pop or country albums were good or not. Although since it is unlikely I will pick any country acts I guess I'll still have a bit of that genre on my island if I feel like it.
Hadn't considered her, but that's a good pick. Great voice whatever the particular genre.

I apologize for the delay...it's been a crazy week, and it looks as if it will to continue to be so...

Sticking with my 90s theme I'm going to add a touch of punk, with a healthy blend of ska. This band doesn't have an extensive catalog, but I'm always pleasantly amused when a song of theirs is playing in the background. With my 10th round choice, I select:

Sublime

Alright, I had actually meant to make a remark about our M/F imbalance several rounds earlier than I eventually did, but this was one of several picks I did not want to threaten by sparking a premature run on the ladies.

So pulling off the unlikely feat of drafting a woman and yet gaining testosterone for my island:

Joan Jett

In an era when many of the biggest male rock acts were stuffing socks down their spandex tights and scheduling rehearsels around getting their hair permed, this woman had bigger huevos than almost any of them. She had punkish roots (when she couldn't get a record deal she bootstrapped herself into a career with early Blackhearts' lineups including members of X and...well, a very famous band that has not been taken yet), graduated to huge singalong arena rock anthems, but never quit snarling and rocking. She's picked up a lot of titles along the way -- the Godmother of Punk, The Original Riot Grrrl, etc., and just yesterday got nominated to the Rock & Roll HOF. For whatever reason there has never been another quite like her, or at least not one who has acheived her level of success. Given all the advances women have made in the last 30 years, that's a disappointment actually.

Should also note she took time to put out an entire album of covers back in her heyday, and some of them were so good it makes me feel better about losing the original bands they came from:

For instance I don't know any other female artist who could have pulled this off (AC/DC):

And it never occured to me until hearing this song, that the way to cover an uncoverable voice like Fogerty's might be with an equally unique female voice:

Thing is, after seeing Arcade Fire and The Decemberists get drafted, I had to readjust everybody's ranges on my indie pop picks. Which meant that I had to prioritise them, since they quite clearly are the music that's most important to me. Since Sufjan, Modest Mouse and The Weakerthans are arguably (aka in my opinion) the best bands of that genre, I had to pick them earlier than I had planned. Which is why I've apparently been drafting other people's 20th round selection for some time now.

Also: I knew we would clash at some point and am very happy that I turned out to be the thief.

Sublime - great choice. For some reason their songs remind me of home, even though I didn't grow up in SoCal.

Joan Jett - just as good a choice. I didn't know about the covers; I'll have to look into those. (Or under those, tee hee!)

Crap, and I forgot about Black Flag - solid, solid work. Big fan of Rollins.

Despite one of my very favorite "safe" bands being snagged out from under me, my heart must go on in this draft. And with the run of females I think I had best step up and select...Tori Amos.

In my pantheon of female singer/songwriters, Tori Amos definitely takes the top position. She combines virtuoso piano playing with amazing songwriting, a honeysuckle voice that she applies dripping with sensuality, and (at least in her first decade) a flair for the controversial in her topics. I don't know too many singers who would dare to have covered Eminem's '97 Bonnie and Clyde, Tom Waits' Time and the Beatles' Happiness Is A Warm Gun on the same album. In addition to her great albums, she kind of got into an "official bootleg" kick in the mid-2000s and released 33 bootlegs, 27 off of a single tour. I know that's a bit redundant, but when I'm stuck on an island, maybe I'll WANT to write a thesis on the evolution of Cornflake Girl over the course of the American Doll Posse tour, I dunno.

Years active: 1986-present
Catalog: 12 studio albums (13h25m), 35 live albums (about 71h, includes 33 "official" bootlegs)
Landmark songs: Crucify, God, Cornflake Girl, A Sorta Fairytale, Sleeps With Butterflies
Song I keep coming back to:

I dunno if I like her music but damn I love a crazy ginger girl.

Joan Jett who I told y'all Brick would pick, I think I like the idea of her more than her music. Brick is (mostly) spot on about how she revolutionized women's role in rock and yet has never been equalized, but when it comes down to it I probably only like about a dozen of her tracks (quite a few of which were covers, and even I Love Rock and Roll was written by a Ramone, iirc). I Hate Myself For Loving You is certainly not one of them and it has only gotten worse as the theme song for Sunday Night Football. I mean seriously?

But this one (nicked from Gary Glitter, which is disturbing) is my favorite:
And in things I wish I never knew apparently this was done on Glee as I just found out when pulling the video up. Great.
