Tropical Island Music Artist Draft - FINIS

With my next pick, thinking about computers in music, I am going the other direction. I am taking the one and only techno-style band I would be willing to have on my island; not because I hate techno, but because, in my opinion, this group is far, far superior to any other techno outfit I have ever heard... in fact, stuff they did five to ten years ago is now being rapped over by the likes of Kanye West and others with great success...

I select those two crazy robots from France:
Daft Punk

Listen to their music... it's infectious. I have been following this band since the "Around the World" single was released in the US off of their first album... love their stuff. And they just did the soundtrack for Tron 2.0...

This is the one band that could perform a song better than anyone else... people don't even bother trying to cover the songs they sang, because they just cannot pull it off.
W. Blake mentioned Sonic Youth's Superstar above, but that song was just one song off of the If I Were A Carpenter album, chock full of interesting interpretations of Carpenters songs.

Bricklayer

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
All of this discussion of computer guided pitch-correction makes me think about the real outstanding vocal talents throughout the years; there is one voice that I can only describe as like a hot knife through butter... the purest, most beautiful female voice I have ever heard... guilty pleasure? Maybe, but I love this band:

The Carpenters

This is the one band that could perform a song better than anyone else... people don't even bother trying to cover the songs they sang, because they just cannot pull it off. No computer assistance here... just a vocal marvel... plus, she played the drums!!! Vocalists of today are lucky if they remember all the words.

Heh -- my mom's all time favorites.

Hmm...not sure whether that's a compliment or not. ;)

Her voice was flat crystal though.

I was just poking around their stuff a couple of days ago trying to decide whether I should add them or not.

As an aside, I am glad that the informal ban on estrogen in this draft has finally been lifted. We were looking like a group of misanthropic cretins there for a long while -- at one point we were 69 picks in and had a grand total of 5 female or female fronted bands, and 4 of the 5 belonged to me or uolj. I was thinking I was going to have to introduce the Hot Muscled Oily Chest award at the end for most homoerotic list. :p

There was a band I won't name that did a medley called "Golden Shower of Hits" that featured a fun little spin on the Carpenters among other jams.

That's to be expected since the majority of us are picking rock artists and historically rock has probably been the most male dominated of all genres.

I like old Bon Jovi. I don't think I liked anything after New Jersey. Not sure what happened with them.
They changed their style to more of a country/pop sound with a rock edge to it to keep up with the times. It worked, they stayed relevant, but it made for some pretty dull music in my opinion. Truth is, Slippery When Wet is all the Bon Jovi i'd ever need.

I don't get the idea of "guilty pleasures". I mean, I know what people are talking about but it's not something I can relate to that well personally. If you like something, you shouldn't be embarrassed, ashamed, etc. about it.

I use the term. For me it isn't about embarrassment so much as it is about a band that is generally looked down upon by others, whether it be the public at large (say over produced pop act with an undeniably catchy hook) or just a close group of friends (say I was a goth but I loved the Beach Boys). So its more like you might actually be ridiculed by peers for liking them, not that one is ashamed to like them.

And to round out my classic rockers collection for my island, I pick:

Kinda surprised that they were not taken during the run on classic rock bands. Anyway, my gain. I'll be listening to classic hits on my island such as this:

and this(a memorable song from my childhood):

There were on my list as a possible late rounder if they were still around. Good pick. They're a pretty underrated band in my opinion. Too many people dismiss them because of the makeup. They wrote some great tunes though and they really knew how to rock. Their 70s stuff in particular is great.

Agreed. I think people get too caught up on the theatrics that they tend to dismiss the songs.

A man with an amazing voice, Josh Groban. Josh_groban.jpg

Pop and classical singer Josh Groban made his debut in the seventh grade, but then put music aside for a few years until he enrolled at the Interlochen Arts Program. In late 1998, he hooked up with a friend of his vocal coach, producer/writer/arranger David Foster. http://allmusic.com/artist/josh-groban-p512890/biography

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
First artist of the draft that I've neither heard nor heard of.
Really? He's AC and so not in my normal music path, but he's huge AC, like one of the biggest selling artists of the last decade type big. You've probably heard him at some point and just not known who it was. Voice to make women swoon and all that.

i may have heard a song somewhere but the name isn't ringing any bells. But then, the last time i really followed AC, Lilith Fair was all the rage. Maybe i'll check out some stuff on youtube and see if it sounds familiar.

It's about time KISS went. I was never a big fan but I was lucky enough to catch them in concert recently and I really enjoyed it. I was gonna let them slip another round or 2 but that's it.

Well I guess it's time to dive into the hip hop scene since we're going through the bottom end of the draft again. I'll likely come back to hip hop at some point before the draft is over but gonna grab one of my favorites while he's still out there..

2Pac

California Love is another song I missed out on in both iPod drafts but am glad to finally have on an island this time.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Damn you!!!

Can't believe it. Perhaps my favourite artist of all time. I assumed with the general ineptitude of most drafters when it comes to hip-hop that he'd last a little longer, in fact he was going to be my next pick. Oh well, I have a feeling he'll be very under appreciated here so maybe a good thing I didn't get him, but great pick. IMO the greatest rapper of all-time, and a true genius.

That one hurt :(

Pac is the one rapper I really like enough to listen to on a fairly regular basis. Me Against the World is a great album. I bump that one in the car all the time.
