Training Camp updates

You like what exactly?

Nice try smart guy. You know what I mean. You use the end of the bench guys to motivate the probably starters. It's a smart way to do it on a team like ours, where most of the starters and rotation guys are still young and developing themselves.

I guess all the players are rusty based on one report about the last training camp, we are doomed! 0_o

Yeah, a little psychology on Westphals' part, maybe. I like it! ;)

Day 5 of training camp

Scrimmage observations:
Jason Jones via twitter said:
Watching #nbakings scrimmage. Refs on the floor. DMC just found Jeter on a nice pass. Whiteside/Head watching.

Hughley coaching one squad, Elie coaching another. Udrih, Greene, Jackson and Dalembert on Hughley's squad.

Cisco, Jeter Casspi, Atcheley and Cousins are Elie's squad

Darnell Jackson is extremely aggressive. Cousins just scored in the post on Dalembert.

Now Truck's team to face Hughley's. That's C. Landry, JT, M. Landry, Reke and Joe Crawford.

I've counted at least [10] techs according to the new rule

Marcus Landry looks good.

Reke took Giddens off the dribble with ease....

Is anyone else sick of this ridiculous "interview style" of Nicholson's.... "Just talk about..." or "Talk about..." Seriously what ever happened to questions? Do you need to treat our players like they need that much "direction" on how to respond? Or do you feel intimated by them so much that you need to take the upper hand with directive language? In any case... it makes you sound ridiculous. No on talks like that. Just ask a few well thought out questions for chrissakes.

I for the most part agree with this... not to mention, am I the only one that is cranking their comp volume max to hear anything? Seriously get the mic up in their grill... every other interview is jumbled....

Cousins did look quite good. But Dalembert was not on the floor nearly as much time, so comparing the total stats isn't all too useful.

Have you guys seen this?!

Right now Cousins looks like a more athletic, stronger Hawes. He didn't really get fed the ball much in the post and was often in the high post, but he rebounds way way better.

Too bad they don't show turnover stats as well...

Even if they had shared equal minutes, both are different types of players. So its not fair to compare them on stats alone. I think you have to make a judgement on having watched them play. And certainly more than in last nights scrimmage.

Day 8 of training camp notes

via Jason Jones in the Bee---(A few noteworthy quotes) said:
"I'm looking at Garcia as more of a two guard now," said Kings coach Paul Westphal after today's practice.

Westphal said the starting spot at small forward is "wide open."

"We're looking for somebody that answers that call," Westphal said. "We don't need somebody who's a No. 1 primary option in reality or in their own mind. We need somebody who's going to get the ball inside and knock down open shots."

That's how I see it myself Mister Westphal, I hope by the end of preseason we will have a consistent starter at the 3 spot.

It's a shame the team seems to of given up on the whole PG's will have to guard Tyreke and vice versa that was hyped all last year. With Beno starting at the 2 from the looks of it.

that would be the reason behind Garcia at the 2. And btw with Westphal saying he now looking at Garcia at shooting guard scares me that I and some others Brick included saw this 6 months before Westphal did.

Westphal did see that too. Don't you recall Cisco coming back from injury and coach starting Cisco out there way too soon with Reke on Feb 20th? It was only like a 2 or 3 games after his return from injury. After a few games, pretty much everyone knew that Cisco was not fully recovered and needed shorter minutes off the bench to play his way into shape. I don't blame coach for not pushing the issue when he wasn't fully healed.

Yeah, but somehow this offseason he was talking about Cisco as a candidate for starting SF. Or...actually since I know the comment was made but can't quite place it, maybe it wasn't him. Maybe it was some smallball idiot like Napear or something. In any case, it was talked about again, despite the fact that Cisco handles well enough to play the 2 and can't rebound at the 3. Just should never have come up wiht the team as constructed, other than spot minutes as a reserve.

Oh really? You're "scared"? Do you think that just maybe Westphal saw it then but didn't call a press conference about it? Perhaps because Cisco was tentatively coming back from an injury and didn't need the added pressure of being declared a new position? Or that he needed to wait to be sure that he had two solid options at the three before doing so? By not announcing it earlier, he keeps the heat on his rookie and young player that they won't be handed anything.

Show a little respect. At least be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I think Westphal coming out and saying he thinks of Garcia as a two is his way of setting the stage for that to gracefully happen. I think he is acutely aware of the matchup advantage, he's the one who was really talking about matchup advantages last year and kind of keyed the fanbase into that when we drafted Tyreke.

One thing I like about Westphal is he is a very adept with his comments and managing his players with respect. By saying that about Cisco he will avoid making Beno look like he has lost the starters job should Garcia eventually get it, simply because now that he's said it, it's in people's minds, and it will give Cisco a chance to win that job, rather than having Beno "lose" it. It won't really matter to Beno personally though, one way or the other, because he's a true pro, but for the image of things, this is how you do it. You first float the idea.... and then, later, it can happen.

Cisco starts at the two for us nearly all year. Book it.
