All-Star
I have been thinking of some deadline deals the Kings could make that could ultimately set us up as future contenders. There was always one deal that I kept reverting back to.
Celtics Get:
Isaiah Thomas
Ben McLemore
Derrick Williams
Tayshaun Prince
Jimmer Fredette
1st Round Pick (Mem)
Celtics Give:
Rajon Rondo
Jeff Green
Marshawn Brooks
Grizzlies Get:
Jeff Green
Jason Thompson
Grizzlies Give:
Ed Davis
Tayshaun Prince
Mike Miller
1st Round Pick (Mem)
Kings Get:
Rajon Rondo
Ed Davis
Marshawn Brooks
Mike Miller
Kings Give:
Isaiah Thomas
Ben McLemore
Jason Thompson
Derrick Williams
Jimmer Fredette
Why for the Celtics?
The Celtics have made it clear that they want to tank this year. Having a healthy Rondo and Green in the rotation will not help. Boston has also said they want young prospects and picks for Rondo. In this trade they get Thomas, McLemore, and Williams who all are young and still have potential. On top of that, they get a 1st round pick from Memphis in a year where they have been a disappointment.
With the young players they currently have on the team (Bradley, Crawford, Olynyk, Sullinger), the young players they just got in the trade (Thomas, McLemore, Williams), and two 1st round picks in next year’s draft, there would be a lot to get excited about for the Celtics organization.
Why for the Grizzlies?
This trade for the Grizzlies is a win now move. They upgrade Prince with Green who gives them a viable scoring wing on the perimeter. He can also knock down threes at a good rate (much better than Prince could) which will help space the floor for Randolph and Gasol. He’s rather efficient shooting 45% and only taking 12 shots a game so he won’t be taking shots away from Conely, Randolph, and Gasol. Green is a solid defender. He’s no Tony Allen, but he isn’t a liability either.
They also get Thompson who would be a great 3rd big off the bench for them. He could play with either Randolph or Gasol. With a big man rotation of Gasol, Randolph, Thompson, and Koufos they will be able to manhandle people down low every game.
Why for the Kings?
We get our 3rd start to pair Cousins and Gay with. Rondo is a terrific playmaker, rebounder, and defender at the PG position. He’ll help run this offense as well as be the lockdown PG defender teams covet.
We also get Ed Davis who I think is capable of becoming our PF of the future. He has the size, length, and mobility to keep up with the quicker PFs in the league. He’s a good rebounder and shotblocker which is essential next to Cousins. Lastly, he can knock down long jumpers which will help spread the floor for Cousins as well as everyone else.
PG – Rondo/McCallum
SG – Thornton/Brooks
SF – Gay/Outlaw/Miller
PF – Davis/Landry/Acy
C – Cousins/Gray/N’Diaye
I’m assuming we won’t have a very high pick after the trade, but it’s going to be pretty difficult to lose our pick considering we’ll have to finish past 5 western conference teams. We could target a SG with the pick. I think James Young would be a great fit with these players. Our core roster going into nest season would be.
PG – Rondo/McCallum
SG – Young/Thornton
SF – Gay/Outlaw
PF – Davis/Landry/Acy
C – Cousins/N’Diaye
Cousins and Gay will be the go-to options in the starting lineup while Rondo is in control of running the offense. Young and Davis will be out there to space the floor with the range on their jumpers. Rondo, Young, and Gay would do a solid job at defending the perimeter and preventing penetration while Davis would be the shotblocker there to clean up any mistakes. Everyone in the starting lineup would be good rebounders for their position. As far as the bench goes, Landry and Thornton would take over the scoring duties in the second unit.
