Top Prospects For ROY - Garcia

Dime Dropper

All-Star
10. Francisco Garcia, Sacramento Kings, 6-7, 200

The great thing about Garcia is that his coach at Louisville, Rick Pitino, went gaga over his work ethic on defense before the draft. That's the first surprise when you consider he went 23rd. Second, in a league filled with so many perimeter-challenged wingmen, how can you pass on a career 37 percent shooter from 3-point range (and an 85 percent shooter from the free-throw line)? Besides, he played three years in college, and he's a mature 23; plus, he's lying in wait should Bonzi Wells resort back to his "problem child" ways.

Cisco was rated ahead of:

Rashad McCants, Minnesota Timberwolves
Ike Diogu, Golden State Warriors
Nate Robinson, New York Knicks
Hakim Warrick, Memphis Grizzlies
Jarrett Jack, Portland Trail Blazers

What do you guys think of this? Do you think Garcia can be in the running for ROY?

Good to know that they are noticing him, but ROY, he will have to work very hard for that. The odds definitely aren't in his favor.

Garcia won't get ROY. I doubt he gets near the time as a bunch of his peers. I think it'll be in the top running Deron Williams/Granger/Diogu/Marvin/Paul/Nate/Felton/May/Villa/Graham.

Would be great though...

Just on the topic of rookies, I think McCants will be a top canidate for 6th man of the year, with his spot in the rotation (back-up SG), and instant offense and energy off the bench.

Looks good on paper but unless RA plays him as much in the regualr season as he did during preseason (which is not very likely) Garcia has no chace. NO one ever won ROY sitting on the bench.

#10 might as well be #50. The race will really be among those Top 5 or 6 guys who will get serious minutes. We just have too much depth evne if Cisco had the talent. he would need both Wells AND Peja to go down with major season-ending injuries to even get in the conversation, and that only if he was able to come in and have a real impact, which may be a bit premature. Just too many bodies.

Are you kidding? Garcia as ROY??? He hasn't impressed me one bit. He will probably be sitting on the bench most of the time.

Charlie Villanueva or Deron Williams will win ROY. Villanueva led all rookies in scoring in the preseason -- 17 points per game -- and he's not even listed in this writer's Top 15!

This class of rookies, while solid, is pretty unspectacular. Could be a race, but I don't see any superstars coming out of this draft, most of them will be really solid for a long time though. But, as was said earlier, it all comes down to minutes.

This years draft was quite deep. I like it a lot. I think there are a group of players who have to potential to be big stars.

I see Chris Paul to be the best outta this class. Could really be a star if he gets his game together.

Chris Paul and the UNC Bobcats (May & Felton) will have a good shot at the ROY award. I'm curious to see the Raptors and how Bosh and Chuckie V play together.

Bogut and Marvin Williams may not even start for their teams right away which will hurt their chances. Deron Williams also has a chance, but I want to see how tight Sloan's reins on him are first.

Everyone else just looks too raw or won't receive the necessary minutes to produce on a ROY level.

I wonder if this class will be like the 2000 draft class where Mike Miller took home the 2000-2001 ROY practically by default.

And next year's class looks even weaker.

I think Cisco can be a good contributor for the Kings (he still has some kinks to work out, especially in terms of shot selection) but he won't get enough court time to be in contention.

Even if Marvin doesn't start he will split/near split minutes with Josh Smith. Same thing if Marvin is starting. Both need development. In Josh's case, continuing.

Same thing for Sean May and Okafor, May won't be starting, but he'll be splitting/close to time with Okafor.

I have difficulty following your logic; Bogut and Marvin Williams aren't viable candidates because they won't start, but Felton and May are? They won't start, either.

I think that McCants could very well be ROY, if he can beat out Hassell in the starting lineup. Sloan is notorious for having a short leash, but it's not as if there's anybody in Utah to bump Deron Williams out of the starting spot; Keith McCleod?

I don't think McCants will be able to, as Casey is going a more defensive-route, and Hassell fits that quite well (not in relation to McCants defense). I see McCants being their 6th man, and tops in the running for that award.

About 'Cats PG, I haven't read who'll be starting. Really could go either way I think between Felton/Knight or they switch it up during the season. Both have reasons to start.

Knight will start; he is still a better point guard at this point. If Felton starts, it'll be because he beats out Rush and Bogans for the starting SG spot.

I ultimately think Knight will too, but he doesn't have it locked up. Judging from what I've read. Felton won't start at SG, nor would he beat either of those two out.
