Tonight's vote

Tonight should be a lesson that this is anything but a done deal. Originally thought to be a 7-2 vote to shut down Sheedy, it ended up being 5-4 vote down. McCarty and Pannell went with Sheedy. Even though it lost, this should be a warning that there are some floppy people on the council. McCarty doesn't surprise me, but Pannell was thought to be one in steadfast support.

I think the problem is that KJ pushed the strong mayor issue and upset some sensitive people. I can't help but think this is hurting the ESC issue. Rob Fong opposed KJ on his strong mayor, but could clearly separate the two issues. Pannell looked like some sort of lost puppy up there even though the strong mayor ballot issue got shot down.

KJ needs to mend some fences with her.

The report on Channel 40 was pretty grim. Crandell was suprised it was such a close vote. He also reported that Breton thinks there may be council members who vote against funding the new arena to spite KJ. How has this thing gotten so out of control?

For most people I would agree that the issues are separate. Rob Fong is a clear example of that. But you had to have watched the performance of Pannell. She rambled on about how the strong mayor thing ruined her family in Chicago and Detroit. And this was during the parking discussion! She has always lined up and happily voted along the way. This time she acted like it was something personal and didn't let it go.

KJ needs to mend some fences here because if anything looked like a spite vote, it was Pannell's.

Agreed. That is why we need to have a "show of force" at the Feb 14th meeting.

If anyone is available, PLEASE show up and show support to this. The last thing you will ever want is the feeling that even a very SMALL effort on your part may have helped but you just couldn't be bothered to show up for a couple hours at a meeting on a Tuesday night.

You don't need to talk before the Council or anything like that. Just show up! Get in touch with Mike and he will let you know where to meet and when! It's easy and it could save the Kings and put a new arena downtown.

What is this strong mayor thing I keep reading about?

The mayor of Sacramento has no more power than any other member of city council - he or she is simply one vote like all the rest. Mayor of Sac is little more than a ceremonial ribbon cutter and city council MC. In a nutshell, it's to give mayor position some actual stature, such as power of veto, etc.
