There Might Be Some Late Firsts Available

Over the next few weeks, don’t be surprised if a large number of teams outside of the lottery try to trade their first-round pick. Multiple sources have told HOOPSWORLD that a lot of teams are trying to get rid their pick, which could make for an interesting draft night. “Almost everyone wants to get out of their pick in this draft,” said one Western Conference executive. “For some teams, it’s hard to take on money for multiple years in this economic climate, especially if the player would not make an impact and help the team win immediately.”

Looks like there might be some picks for the taking, though we can't say exactly which ones. Thought this was decent discussion fodder...

The question is, what is the price. A player? Money? If its money, it might not happen. There are several players I'd like to have....

Wow, so so much for this being a deep draft everyone is excited about? And this after the new revenue sharing rules etc. have poured millions into small market accounts? Actually an odd statement, given that a late first round rookie locked into his contract is one of the cheapest players on an NBA roster.

Yeah, I find it a little puzzling myself. I'd love to see the Kings acquire another 1st round pick. While they need some vets to add to the mix, it's never a bad thing to hope you can find a diamond in the rough via the draft, especially considering the low cost of the contract.

I think the teams that are likely to sell/trade thier pick, are teams in the bottom half of the first round. In other words, good teams with already large payrolls. No one wants to be over or near the luxury tax threshold. Nothing changes this year, but then it starts to go up every year, and the penalty can be very extreme. The Lakers will owe around 12 mil in penalties this coming year. But if their payroll would remain the same monetarily, they would pay around 20 mil the next year. I don't care how wealthy you are, thats a pretty stiff kick in the wallet

Most of the teams that are in that situation won't get a dime of revenue sharing, and already have a playoff contending team. If anything, they want more financial flexabiltiy going forward with the new CBA. In other words, I think teams are being forced to think further into the future financially instead of just flying by the seat of their pants. I don't think it has anything to do with the depth of the draft.

It has been shown that when the luxury tax was inserted, th large market teams got even more better than the other teams because the luxury tax penalty meant nothing to them. The Lakers with a billion dollar TV contract don't care about the luxury tax. The luxury tax did not bring parity but further separated the rich from thr kinda rich. I know if I can find the article but it was eye opening.

Wasn't sure where to put this, this seemed as good a place as any:

@NBAonESPN: Sources: Raptors shopping No. 8 pick for veteran swingman (via @ESPNSteinLine & @chadfordinsider)

And Toronto, our dear Canadian friends, have we got just the guy for you:

Okay, and this is even cooler:

Shaun Powell: Hornets will entertain offers for 10th pick if someone also agrees to take Ariza or Okafor contracts. Twitter

We could kill a TON of birds with one stone there. Have the 5th pick, the 10th pick, AND Okafor? Please don't be too broke owners, please don;t be too broke owners...please...please...

I'll even throw in a couple of bucks. Get it done!

5th, 10th, and Okafor would be friggin amazing!

And doesnt Okafor expire right around the extension time for one of two main guys (Reke and Cuz, not Jimmer and IT)?

...Now I'm all excited. Too bad we have broke owners and a complacent GM.

Okay, a quick check of the interwebs suggest that Okafor's salary cap numbers will be around 13.5M and 14.5M the next 2 seasons while Ariza's are 7.2M and 7.7M (player option).

Given the fact that we have CHEAP owners in cost saving mode, I'm thinking Ariza and the pick are the only realistic option for our team.

And yes .. I'd love to acquire either of those players AND that pick. I'd love to hear why somebody would not. Even if you don't like either player, it's only for 2 seasons.
