I don't think a player who has an option on their contract should be considered a UFA unless they've opted out/stated they're opting out. In Pierce's case, I was curious as to whether he threw his hat in the ring because I hadn't heard that. So, for all intents and purposes, he's not a UFA, at least not yet.

It's because he has a player option, thats why it's like that. The asteriks mean that.

I read something last week about the Truth that the Celtics are most likely pressured to keep him because he is the present day Mr. Celtic. Without PP and the team possibily dismantling, the fans won't be happy.

grossly overpaying here?? JJ is not worth that kinda jack-

The Atlanta Hawks officially extended a six-year, approximately $120 million offer to retain free agent Joe Johnson at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, the first salvo in the most anticipated free-agent negotiating period in NBA history, a person with knowledge of the offer told CBSSports.com.

The interest Johnson has generated, particularly from the Knicks, Bulls, Heat, Mavericks and Clippers, forced the Hawks' hand and resulted in the first of many surprises anticipated in the feeding frenzy over LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and other marquee players who hit the market a minute after the stroke of midnight.

Johnson agreed to meet with a contingent of Knicks officials led by his former coach in Phoenix, Mike D'Antoni, in Los Angeles shortly after official contact was permitted by league rules. The Knicks, who also planned to meet with free-agent shooting guard Mike Miller and at least speak by phone with D'Antoni's former power forward in Phoenix, Amar'e Stoudemire, are hoping to gage the desire of potential running mates before a Thursday meeting with James and his team of advisers, which is expected to take place near James' home in Akron, Ohio.

Johnson’s intentions have been difficult to read, with sources indicating that he’s been intent on hearing what other teams have to say before deciding whether to return to Atlanta. But the additional $25-plus million that Atlanta can offer him, with bigger raises and a sixth year, is expected to speak volumes in his decision. It would be a huge commitment on the Hawks’ part, one that would price Johnson’s many suitors out of the market.

It’s feasible that the max offer could simply be parlayed into a sign-and-trade arrangement, with Johnson going to the Knicks or Clippers, believed to be his two most likely destinations if he were to leave the Hawks. But if that’s the case, why would Atlanta show its cards this early? If they were preparing for Johnson to leave, they’d wait for him to bring offers to them and then react. Not the case here.

If Johnson stays, the options for teams in pursuit of LeBron are diminished exponentially. A wild card for the Knicks would be to sell LeBron on coming to New York and letting him recruit Johnson to join him. But short of landing LeBron, the Knicks’ chances of landing Johnson with a five-year deal – the most they could offer – would be close to zero. Not only would Johnson be insane to leave that much money on the table at this stage of his career – he’d be 34 in the sixth year of the Hawks’ deal – but his personality is such that he wouldn’t want to be the consolation prize for LeBron in New York. Being a franchise player has never been Johnson’s desire or strong suit, much less in the glare of New York.

With the free-agency free-for-all now upon us, here’s the rest of the buzz culled from team executives and agents throughout the day and night:

yeah, this is ridiculous......to me joe johnson is nowhere close to being worth a max contract, i guess that hawks are in that mode where they feel like they NEED to make a deal

Will JJ be overpaid relative to similar talent? Of course! But if the Hawk loses him, they don't have enough cap room to sign an equivalent and they cannot reasonably expect Jamal Crawford make up for the lost in production. Imo, the Hawks cannot afford not to overpay him because they've built the team around him. And who's to say a team who lost out on Lebron, Wade, and Bosh won't throw the max at JJ? In fact, I fully expected somebody to give JJ the max.

For the Hawks, there is just too much risk involved if they lose JJ: they could miss the playoff, significant drop in attendance, loss of merchandise sales, etc. It's possibly they continue to be a good team without him, but it's a risk that they do not want to take. If his fair market value is around $14 millions per year (similar to Brandon Roy, less than Vince Carter), and if the Hawks think JJ's presence alone can generate six millions of revenue via sales then this is basically a wash.

If I'm the Hawks' GM, I'd offer JJ the max too because I do not want to deal with the aftermath of losing him. The Hawks would then try to go after a star FA in 2011 and chances are they will have to overpay somebody to land in Atlanta anyway.

.

The next few weeks in the NBA may closely resemble the 2003 Sacramento housing market. It may also share the same fate.

Hawks the way they are built - aren't going to get further than 2nd round with J.J It would be Robin getting Batman's money to be Robin. It would be a ban move

Didn't we all know that Joe Johnson was going to get max money? Wasn't that pretty much written in stone months ago? That's the main reason I've been saying all this time that I have no interest in seeing him in a Kings uni. My offer to Joe Johnson would have been five years, $65 million, and even then, I think that's too much for the Kings to pay him. So this $120 million business is just outrageous, but I've been resigned to it for a while now. Won't even get a max offer from anyone else.

Bucks sign Drew Gooden 5 yrs/32 mil
Bucks resign John Salmons 5 yrs/39 mil
Wolves resign Darko Milic 4 yrs/20 mil
Grizzlies resign Rudy Gay 5 yrs/80 mil. Max deal for Rudy.

My bad, it is a $39M/5 year deal with Salmons!
