The Lockout has arrived.

Unless I missed it the article just said they wanted the right to contract without union approval, I saw nothing other than speculation that this means the Kings.
 
The sad part is, I don't think these greedy cretins have enough intelligence to realize that all they're doing is prolonging the inevitable and guaranteeing themselves an even worse deal when one is finally done. When they're playing for 47/53 under a hard-cap next year, they're going to look pretty frigging stupid. Unbelievable!
 
Good thing for me is the 49ers are good, so I won't really miss the NBA for several more months. Then Baseball starts about a month after football. I'll deal with it. EFF all this BS.
 
I would think that with a step this extreme they would need to take a vote from all the players. If a few hardliners pushed this through against the will of the majority, I can't imagine the fireworks inside the "union" that are to come.

I'm kind of glad no Kings players were there today. The fact that our guys seem quiet or disinterested in this ego fest is about the only reason why I'd be able to come back and support them.
 
The only group that is going to benefit from the path the union is on is going to be the agents. The players are giving up hundreds of millions of dollars this year and who knows how much more in their careers by doing this. I am not sure what they don't understand about this.

If there is no NBA, no one in the US besides a few dedicated fans is going to care about the superstars. The owners have a much longer time to recoup losses from lost seasons than the players do. Have fun playing overseas(if you can find a team that is going to pay you. 400 NBA players just entered the job market.) and say goodbye to your lucrative endorsements guys. This is just a colossal mess for the players. A few overblown egos have screwed over the vast majority of players. You are not business people or lawyers. You are basketball players. Just focus on that.
 
I can't believe they didn't put any of this to vote. Shocked by the repeated stupidity which keeps coming out.

So a few agents, lawyers, Hunter/Fisher, and 30 player reps decided this was a better option, to just blow up the whole damn thing, then at least presenting the offer to the union?

I hope some of these players end up flipping burgers and pumping gas to make ends meet. Bring them back to reality.
 
Well lets see, now its gonna be a real mess
Union - gonna loose out on member dues Hunter and Fish loose their jobs for botching it up
Players - gonna loose out on current salary, guar contracts, prob a worse deal
Agents loose - 10% of nothing is nothing
Stern and NBA - gonna loose Stern retires in discrace NBA office suffers
Big owners - loose out on the big bucks - they loose
Small Owners - dont have the money to survive - loose
Maloofs - go broke with no money coming in
Sacramento - evryone looses interest arena drive looses steam, local economy takes another dive into the abyss
Arena Workers - all loose their livelyhood
NBA Fans - get totally screwed no games
Michal Jordan - comes out looking like a sell out

Im sorry I just dont see any winners coming out
of this mess!!!

Not to start a back n forth arguement, but
player perception and in some sports writers circles (Jason Whitlock) is that as the head of the "Hard line small market owners"
he has turned his back on the players since he is now one of the "Greedy" owners

not that I agree with that, but that is what I am getting from the media

Of course, this reminds of Michael Jordan's infamous catcall at late Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin from the 1998 lockout negotiations, when Jordan yelled, "If you can't make a profit, you should sell your team," at the longtime owner (Jordan has owned the Bobcats for 17 months, Pollin had owned his Wizards for three decades by that point).

Ah, I see. Makes sense if you managed to overlook that MJ has always been out for what's best for MJ during his career. I don't see anything that has changed. (written before jalfa posted, which is amusing, but again typical of MJ's all business attitude).
 
You can't expect MJ to have the same mentality as a player and an owner. I wouldn't expect that from anybody. They're in a completely different environment.
 
I Think Kevin Martin should form a new Union, since all the players are no longer represented by the old Union, sign up the 250 players that want to play ball instead of going into litigation, the NBA voids all the old guaranteed contracts, Keven tells stern his players agree to the 50/50 offer, with any of his members getting identical contracts that existed previosly, let the teams fill up the rest of their rosters with undrafted, out of work, euro players that want to sign up and let all the other players suck eggs for years while tied up in the court while the players that want to play has fun and a fat check

Well if anything it does go to show how clueless even the players with the most business sense might be. Although again I stick to MJ is out for MJ.

Still I don't think its out of line to suggest that an employee who gets promoted to management should remember where he came from. It's just that in this case we're talking about a bunch of overpaid entitled babies.

Do you honestly think the owners are going to get hurt by this? There is a large group of owners that wanted this. Its the players that are going to be the big losers. If they lose this season, and all the salaries that goes with it, they'll never, ever, make it up. Some players never have more than a 4 or 5 year career. Guys like Garnett and Ray Allen are losing a year of their career that they'll never get back. Its just sheer stupidity!

Alas if that were legal and wouldn't get you hit by treble damages in an antitrust suit I think it would be a grand idea :)

When your job is to play basketball, thats what your do, and MJ did better than just about anybody else. When you job is to run a business, thats what you do. Jury is still out on MJ in that capacity. As for as remembering your roots, that applies mostly to how you treat people, not how you pay them. No business is a charity orginization. Its job is to make money. Now, that aside, I do think MJ is a little over the top, and usually no good comes from that. It could affect his ability to attract freeagents down the road. But its his business, and his frist priority is to make a profit. As far as MJ only looking out for himself. That should be everyones first priority. If you can't take care of yourself, your in no position to take care of anyone else.

Everyone is going to get hurt by this. There's definitely a good argument to be made that the players will get hurt more, but to say that the owners won't get hurt is hyperbolic at best. On the other hand though, not all of the owners are in the same boat, they'll get hurt to varying degrees. I don't buy the claim that many owners really wanted this to happen, sounds like a lot of BS posturing to me. I think they wanted a season quite a bit, and I'm glad the players are finally fighting back instead of passively taking it in the..well, you know the rest. You can accuse the players of acting too late, and having a bad strategy, but they're more in the right here than the owners are. You can't keep having the players make all the concessions, then threaten them with ultimatums, and not have them fight back. Their "final" offer was ridiculous and unacceptable, they wanted the players to completely pay for the owners' incompetence. I wanted the players to cave because I badly want basketball back, and I have a feeling they're not going to get that much better of a deal when it's all over, but it's not their fault that it's come to this. The owners refused to negotiate, they refused to budge on anything meaningful, and now I hope it bites them in the ***, because the players were the only ones actually trying to negotiate and make concessions for the other side.
 
Of course the players made more concessions, they had to! Did you not see how great of a deal they had in the last agreement?
