The Bulls get WHAT???

I was just listening to Kornheiser's radio show, and he had Chicago Tribune writer Sam Smith on; Kornheiser asked Smith to predict the tournament, which he's pretty much doing with all his guests this week, no big deal, right? He then asks Smith about the prospect of Stoudemire returning to Phoenix, and Smith makes the same comparison to the Suns and Kings that I've heard a few dozen times already...

He then starts talking about draft prospects, and the topic turns to Greg Oden, which gets Smith to the subject of the Knicks and Bulls... this is when I start paying attention: according to Smith, Chicago is due to get New York's first draft pick this year, and then they could get their first draft pick next year! I found this so astonishing that I had to Google for more information, and came up with this.

If I'm reading this correctly, then that means that Chicago gets New York's first round pick in 2006, unless New York makes the playoffs, and then gets the right to swap picks with New York next year, unless the Knicks finish with one of the top five records in the league, when Oden is expected to declare? So, the Bulls could potentially get back-to-back Number Ones for Eddy F. Curry?

That can't be right... can it?

I heared that here on local radio few weeks ago (around the time Francis trade went down). I was going to post in disbelievement back than.

It's true as far as I know.

http://www.nba.com/bulls/news/curry_traded_051004.html

"October 4, 2005 – The Chicago Bulls convey to the New York Knicks the contract of Antonio Davis and the signed-and-traded contract of Eddy Curry. In exchange, New York conveys to Chicago the contracts of Tim Thomas and Michael Sweetney, the signed-and-traded contract of Jermaine Jackson, and New York’s regular second round draft choice in 2007 and 2009.
In addition, New York conveys to Chicago, New York’s 2006 regular first round draft choice on condition that the pick does not actually go to Utah (due to not being number 26-30) and also on condition that New York receives San Antonio’s 2006 regular first round selection (due to being number 11-30).

If New York’s 2006 first round does go to Utah (due to being number 26-30), and New York does receive San Antonio’s 2006 first round pick (due to being number 11-30), New York conveys to Chicago that San Antonio first round selection.

In addition, New York also conveys to Chicago the right to switch first round draft picks with New York in 2007 provided that New York’s first round selection does not go to Utah (is not number 25-30). Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed. This trade is conditional upon the players passing their physicals."

Some people make smart trades, some people make dumb trades, and then there is New York... It really is a wonder Knicks fans have not burned Zeek in effige and or stormed the corporate office with torchesand pitchforks!

That's actually correct. Knicks pretty much gave a very high lottery pick in 2006 and potentially high lottery pick in 2007 for Eddy Curry. That's Isiah for you...

Now I am sure that when Zeke made the trade he felt like they are giving up nothing since with Curry and LB they will be rocking the NBA. In a same way that they got Francis' bloated contract in order to stack up talent and make a run at KG in the off season. Right....

Like someone said before, Zeke has amazing ability to fail upwards and after each failure land a better job.

Did you hear what happened when that lady who is sueing Zeke and Knicks for sexual harassment offered to settle for $2mil? Zeke countered with $30mil over 5 years (most repeated ASB joke according to Bill Simmons).

I have a vague memory that there used to be a clause where you couldn't trade your first round pick two years in a row? Maybe that was under an old CBA.

You are correct. In 2007 Draft Bulls have an option to choose between their and Knicks' picks which means Knicks get a pick but it's the lowest of the two.

That is indeed correct. Bulls have a lot of good stuff going for them, future-wise. :)

Part of the reason that I am a Kings fan and for the first time in my life not a fan of a local bball franchise (The Bulls) is that the "future" has been coming for 8 years now.

The Bulls had 14 mil expiring (Tim Thomas), all those draft picks and young duplicative talent playing same 2 positions (Deng/Noce at SF and heinrich/Gordon/Duhon at PG) and they didn't even attempt to package it to Minny for KG?! As bad as Krause was in judging talent and getting FA's to Chicago since after MJ and Phil left, Paxson is only good in hoarding "goodness" with not much to show for it. Young team with talent - yes, cap space - check that too, draft pick - yes. The only problem is that this year will be really slim on FA's and start potential in the draft.

If they at least offered Thomas, both picks this year, SF and PG dupes for KG maybe Minny would listen. Instead they may get Nene (but will probably end up with Gooden) and draft yet another tweener or a dupe. Bleh...

ugh, isiah thomas is a horrible GM. as if the knicks weren't bad enough. if i were the knicks GM, i'd trade for expiring contracts and just build through the draft. they are doing the total opposite. OMFG, how did zeke get that job????? i would work for 1% of what he's earning and do a better job!
