Terrence Jones Rising Up Draft Boards

He can hit a shot if he has space. Baja is right, a lot of his skills were hidden in Calipari's system, but the downside to that is that those weren't properly developed like they should have been. Can Jones be a SF? Yeah, he could, but I think he fits more of a hybrid 4 type, I think he'll have the height and reach for it. If he's going to be a 3 though, he has to slim down, because he doesnt have the lateral quickness at his current weight to guard 3's.

Agreed, I think he has the body to be more of a PF. He also rebounds and blocks shots pretty well so I think that would be wasted at the 3.

Jones has a position, or at least has the ability to have a position. Some of it is Greene's fault, and some of it has been the coaching he has received. I can't remember another player who was jerked around as much as he was. PF to SF, starter to 12th man, just nothing consistent for him in 4 seasons.

I think Jones clearly has a better game as an NBA power forward than Greene ever did. He rebounds better, he's stronger, and I think he is just more physical. I was under the impression that Donte never wanted to be a big. He never really wanted to rebound or go at guys in the post. And I'm actually fine with that, its just a shame he never got a real opportunity at SF this season.

In some world, Donte Greene is a starter / bench small forward who can defend and hit open jumpers .. provide some weak side blocking and will always run the floor. He is only 24. I still see potential there. I think he can do most of the things Kawhi Leonard did this season. Keep in mind that the one year Donte did play at a semi consistent level was in 2009-2010 where he played 21mpg averaging 8.5 points shooting .377 from 3 ... which is incredibly similar to what Leonard did this season.

JT, Reke, Hawesome, DMC, Omri....

Pretty much every youngster drafted since Garcia.

Re: T-Jones. I think he's the sleeper of this draft. Dude could end up with Josh Smith numbers in the NBA. If GP wanted to make a high risk/high reward type of pick, I'd feel safer with Jones than with Drummond.

I think we need to try to trade down with Portland (who wants Drummond), and go for Jones and Leonard this draft. Do wonders for our frontcourt.

How can none of y'all see that T. Jones is just another Donte Greene?

I just don't understand statements like this one. His game at Kentucky is nothing like Greene's at Syracuse. Donte was nothing but a three point chucker at Syracuse. I doubt anyone would call Jones a 3pt chucker. Jones is a very good defender, and a very good rebounder. Donte is still looking up the word rebound in the dictionary. Jones is a very intense competitior with good work ethics. Donte's idea of work ethic in the offseason was to make videos.

Please, explain the resemblence.

There's no question that Greene got jerked around. But so did JT, and JT still managed to come into training camp in great shape every year. Greene didn't. some of the onus is on Greene. Despite your suroundings, you still have a personal responsibility to try and improve your game. Your head coach isn't going to improve your shooting. Or your ballhandling. He can't go out and rebound the ball for you. Yes, Greene did improve in all those areas, but not enough to keep him around. And thats on him!

lets see, he was a top HS player, has good size for either PF or SF, good post game, blocks shots, rebounds, can handle and hit jumpers, won a national title, etc.

Terrence Jones
6'8.25 w/o shoes 6'9.5 w/shoes 252lbs wingspan: 7'2.25" bodyfat%: 7.7

Donte Greene

Frosh: 35.8min 17.7pts (.418 .345 .707) 7.2reb 2.0ast 1.3stl 1.6blk 2.6TO

Now that's not my comparison -- I did not initally make it. But trying to dismiss Donte Green via the greatness of Terrence Jones' accomplishments is a misplaced attempt. Jones got lucky enough to be maybe the 3rd best guy on a NCAA title team as his special accomplishment. The plaque will look good hanging on his wall. But this isn't a player who dominated in college to much greater degree than Donte did. And Donte has hung in the NBA for 4 yrs, while Jones has yet to set foot in the league.

And I STILL don't have a dog in this hunt. I don't have great feel for what Terrence Jones will or will not do, and am content for the most part to read what others think. I am merely commenting on any sense of entitlement or expectation that this guy can't miss because of all those amazing things he has done which nobody else has.

When you adjust the stats for minutes played, Jones averaged about 4 RPG more than Greene, which is a huge difference, especially when evaluating a forward. He also got to the free throw line at double the rate of Donte, which I would argue is due to Jones' superior aggressiveness and athletic ability. It also didn't help that Donte lived outside the three point line, averaging 7.7 3pt attempts to Jones' 2.7, despite being only a marginally better outside shooter.

I'd also disagree with the sentiment that Jones got lucky to be the third best player on a championship team. His stats this year were nearly identical to MKG's, with the main difference being that Jones had better defensive numbers (double the amount of blocks) and was a better outside shooter.

MKG
15.3 PTS 49.3 FG% 25.5% 3PT 9.5 REB 2.4 AST 1.2 STL 1.2 BLK 2.8 TO

Jones
FR. 20.1 PTS 44.2 FG% 32.9% 3PT 11.3 REB 2.0 AST 1.5 STL 2.4 BLK 2.5 TO
SO. 16.8 PTS 49.1 FG% 32.7% 3PT 9.7 REB 1.8 AST 1.8 STL 2.4 BLK 2.2 TO

For comparison sake, here are Carmelo Anthony's numbers from his freshman year:
23.1 PTS 45.3 FG% 33.7% 3PT 10.3 REB 2.3 AST 1.6 STL .9 BLK 2.3 TO

Donte Greene had a ton of talent coming out of high school and he probably could have been a top 10 pick. I'm not sure why he slipped. He was also the star of the Vegas Summer League that year. We can all speculate why he wasn't given much of a shot to make it as a starter but probably it comes down to hard work and focus. I wouldn't let his lack of success influence my opinion about Terrence Jones. They might have similar physical measurements but that doesn't mean their attitude is at all the same. On the flip side, it's clear that success in high school or college is no guarantee of success at the next level.

6'8.25 without shoes, 7'2.25 wingspan, 252 pounds WHOA he measured out. If MKG is off the board and Henson does not impress GP Jones could in fact have his name called at five.

Jones put on a Washington hat at a news conference and while his mother and Terrence Ross were celebrating...a phone call came from John Calipari. Jones' father even showed up at the news conference though he hadn't been in Jones' life since he was five.

Terrence Ross, playing on the same team with Jones, was Oregon player of the year as a sophomore. He decided to go to a prep school, but was homesick and transferred back to Oregon. Unfortunately, he was not allowed to play his senior year because of transfer rules.
