Agent: Pierce wants to stay in Boston
[continued from Celtics/view.bg?articleid=147642&format=&page=1>previous page]

However, if the Celtics had kept the No. 7 pick, Minnesota would have taken Foye at No. 6. The Timberwolves had Foye rated second overall in the draft. The C’s had him slotted highly, as well, and Ainge reportedly looked at moving up to get him. . . .
Sebastian Telfair is planning to negotiate with Cedric Maxwell regarding the No. 31. Telfair has always worn it because he’s from 31st Street in Brooklyn, but the number now hangs in the Garden rafters because of Max.
“I just got his phone number,” Telfair said. “I’m going to call him.”

how the hell are you gonna try and call a legend and ask him to unretire his number..... no respect for the guys that paved the way before him... i mean telfair isnt even a star yet.... matter of fact he isnt even a decent role player... dude is just walking potential....

Surely Telfair having no respect for the game is not news. I figured that out after watching the first two minutes of his ESPN special. Besides, just look at his cousin.

It's not the game these punk kids have no respect for it's history or tradition. It's all about "Don't you know who I am?" with NO CLUE about who or waht came before them. But heck it's not exclusive to basketball.

I agree its more of a history issue than just a respect of the game. Of course respect for the game includes knowing its history. And even if you don't know the history there's just a matter of respecting your elders. I hope Maxwell doesn't even answer the phone.

I honestly don't know the history of Maxwell's number but given the amount of numbers that the Celtics have retired I wouldn't be surprised if 31 wasn't his first choice either.

I love Maxwell!! He's the most underappreciated Celtic ever. He was the Finals MVP in '81.

I hope he tells Telfair to go **** himself.

He's not glossing over much w/ Ced Maxwell.

Maxwell publicly offered to sell it to him.

Telfair just doesn't think before he says/does something. He should have more respect for Maxwell than this but he didn't think about it. Just like he didn't think about the loaded gun that was his girlfriend's or whatever. He's not a bad person it just seems like he doesn't think. Shoulda gone to college.

maybe it was a joke. just because the writer didn't put a smiley after it, doesn't mean it was said in all seriousness... let's give the guy a break, eh?

I could understand negotiating with a current teammate like Webber did with Corliss back in '99 for the #4. However, I do disagree with him trying to ask a legend to take his jersey out of the rafters. Maybe Celtics can try and do like what VaTech did with Michael Vick's jersey. They retired the jersey, but not the number. Therefore future players can still wear the #7, it just can't say Vick on the back obviously!

But, the respect factor is extremely important. When Jason Kidd showed up to the Mavs, he wanted to wear #32 because of Magic Johnson. But Mashburn had always worn #32, so Kidd humbly conceeded and was fine with #5 because of 3+2. The same thing in New Jersey. Kidd showed respect for Dr J.'s number 32 being retired there, so he resorted to the #5 again, and I don't think that's made much of a difference in his playing because he's played the best basketball of his career in NJ! Telfair could take a lesson from JKidd on this one!

stephon marbury.... and i dont know how anyone can call someone they dont know an "***"

Ced Maxwell a legend?! It took the Celtics about 37 years to realize it and retire his number. Danny Ainge has gotta be thinking WTF.

It was 19 years from his last game with the C's (84) to the official number retiring (2003). Telfair only got there 3 years too late.

Well, I don't know anything about Telfair, but I do know that through Chauncy Billups' career, he has gone with the number 4, apparently in honor of Joe Dumars. When he became a Piston, he did ask Joe D if he could use his number 4. He was denied, obveously, but it was not without respect. In fact, it was in honor of the guy...

I hear this kind of arguement all the time. From my understanding, people from eastern Europe consider naming a child the same as a living relitive is a dishonor to the living relitive... it is like 'we are tired of you, we want a new one with the same name. However, in more western Europe, it is a great honor to have the same name as, say, your father, or mother, or uncle. It is sort of a POV thing.
