TDOS Tropical Island IPOD Cover Draft - Round 20

#1
Welcome back to your island!

What? I have an island, you may ask...
Why yes, and aren't you lucky!

However, and unfortunately, this island of yours is a bit isolationist. You are the only one who can live there. And you cannot take anything with you. Rats. EXCEPT...

You can take one IPOD, along with a solar powered charger that is extremely weather resistant, along with lots of food, drinks, and probably a sleeping bag or two...

HOWEVER, there is one more thing...your island is more of an archipelago, and your "neighbors" also have islands and iPods of their own. Careful navigating the shark infested waters if you want to check out any of their tunes, and or share sleeping bags...

While traveling to the archipelago, a fierce debate breaks out regarding the merits of musical geniuses. The end result of said argument is a challenge. DRAFT THE BEST LIST OF COVER SONGS AND YOU GET TO KEEP THEM FOR YOUR IPOD. All other IPODS will only be allowed looped tracks of sweating to the 80s, and/or muzak medleys, probably...

First, some rules:

1) Well, what is a cover you say. As per Wikipedia:
Wikipedia Cover_version said:
a cover version or cover song, or simply cover, is a new performance or recording of a previously recorded, commercially released (or unreleased) song, by someone other than the original artist or composer.
We'll go by this definition as able...Please draft one cover song per round, no copies but different running length stuff. Same song, different group will be considered different cover. You're welcome GGG :). Released recordings are all fair game; studio, live concert, anthology tributes, etc., as long as there is continued audio evidence available to the public (in non bootleg form).

2) If there is confusion regarding the original version, chronology of release is the 1st tie breaker. As for songwriters who also perform their songs, they own a portion of/the original version and their version shall therefore also be deemed original. You wrote it, so you can't cover it...

3) But what about parodies, are they cover songs? Nope, they are original works with similar musical tones/rhythms/themes/etc. As they are original in nature, they are not covers of the parodied work.

4) If it's a traditional song, whatever recorded version someone picks is going to be a cover. By implied definition, the original version of the song predates recorded music. Therefore, they are fair game for all artists to record without being the composer. Please supply origins as able, and if the song goes back to antiquity, it may be referenced as "traditional" in origin.

5) Medley's/Mixes/Reduxes/Blends/Etc. are combinations of various song materials, not drawing from one specific source. Therefore, they shall not be draftable unless they are of one source and meet the other rules/requirements above.

6) Draft order shall be serpentine in nature and consist of 20 rounds of picks, with 16 drafters ideally. There is 24 hours per pick, and time-outs may be made up within the subsequent round (current, and next). Please post make-up picks ASAP! If this becomes a problem, Bricklayer has a bat. Keep it moving people, no one likes time-outs...Draft order will be determined at random by an unbiased outsider (VF21?).

7) Upon posting your cover selection, please include a description elaborating rationale of your choice. Pictures, videos, fun stuff is encouraged. Board rules still apply, and trump all directives of this draft. KEEP IT FAMILY FRIENDLY. Also, please post release year and artist of both original work, and selected cover. I will link these for the playoffs so the selection page carries forward...FOREVER...

8) Upon completion of a 20 round draft, voting will commence via a playoff format, and the winner gets a shiny trophy as proof of their musical aptitude.

Here's an interesting question. In the case of an artist who wrote a song for someone else and then later recorded the song themselves, which version is the cover?

I think people would be surprised by some of the songs that are covers simply because they overshadow the originals. Lots of great songs to choose from.

However, let's get this out of the way right now. Here is the worst cover song ever recorded, for a myriad of reasons.

I would suggest that when posting a selection, we should also post the artist/year of the original. Sometimes we know songs are covers but we're not really sure who did the original. Tracking that down will probably prevent some accidental violations of rule #4 at least.

Here's an interesting question. In the case of an artist who wrote a song for someone else and then later recorded the song themselves, which version is the cover? For instance, Randy Newman wrote "Mama Told Me Not to Come" for Eric Burden's solo album but then recorded it himself in 1970.]
I'd go by the rule of chronology here, however, I see how it may be confusing if the songwriter also put out a version of the song they wrote after another artist had performed it. Therefore the questions remains, who "owns" the original version...As for this draft, I'm leaning towards ties go to the performer, not the song writer.

Edit: Reading through the cover definition again, it states
: a cover version or cover song, or simply cover, is a new performance or recording of a previously recorded, commercially released (or unreleased) song, by someone other than the original artist or composer.
I'm modified rule #2 to reflect this. You wrote it, so you can't cover it...

NOTE: First, I'd be happy to provide the randomized draft order (per use of the randomizer.org). :)

Second, I'd like to take this opportunity (hope you don't mind Jespher) to ask EVERYONE not to post any actual song titles in this thread. It's especially irritating to participants to see a song they had hoped to sneak in with a late round pick be discussed publicly. No matter how ridiculous you may think the song is, there may be someone who wanted to pick it for reasons known only to themselves. This topic came up in the original IPOD singles draft years ago and I made it a rule then that NO unpicked songs (or in this case, covers of songs) could be discussed.

:)

Well said and I agree. Thanks VF21!

To make sure I have this straight, since it will actually affect a couple of my likely selections, if an artist wrote a song for someone else which received wide release but then the composer later recorded their own version of that song, then both the original released version and the composer's later version would be ineligible but any and all other versions that may exist would be considered covers? Just want to make sure before I start putting together my draft list.

Also, it's not mentioned in the rules, but I think it is extra important in this draft: what kind of release criteria are we going by for this? A ton of cover songs have been released as singles or on studio albums, but there are also a ton that exist only on live albums or on anthology compilations because they were regularly performed by a particular band or artist. My assumption/preference would be to keep things as open as possible -- if it was released on an album (non-bootleg), it's eligible -- but I'd like to know what you had in mind here.

1) To clarify, composers cannot cover their own written material, however, if there are versions released before the composer recorded their version, only the initial release would be considered the original (don't draft initial release, as this can't be the cover...). Subsequent releases following the first one (not perfomred by the author/composer) are covers, and therefore draftable.

2) Released recordings are all fair game, studio, live concert, anthology tributes, etc., as long as there is continued audio evidence available to the public (in non bootleg form). I agree with GGG that is is more fun when the rules are more open ended. Please include release year for each selection, and best case would be a youtube clip or link to the media content.

There is still room for 6 more draft participants.

No experience is required, and you typically only are up to pick 1-3x/week max. Have no fear, come join the fun!

4) Traditional works typically predate modern recording, and therefore, are typically fair game for all artists to record. Varying versions of these are wide ranging and awesome, however, since the initial version is written and not recorded, they are currently out of bounds. I may be swayed to change this pre draft if there is ample argument otherwise...
Couple questions as I'm thinking of possible draftees...

What are we considering traditional recordings? I would assume spirituals, early folk songs, some early gospel, that sort of thing? I agree with the rule, but want to make sure I'm interpreting it correctly.

Second question: What is to be done about standards? All those songs from the 30s and 40s (and such) that were recorded by all the big bands and singers of the time? They're not strictly covers, I don't think, but since they would likely have had a traceable first recording they also don't have the same pitfall as the traditional songs. I don't want to post any titles in the thread, obviously, but let me know if you'd like an example via PM to help with a ruling.

alright, with no general for the fast food draft I'm just going to go ahead and put up a pitch in the main forum for the two we have active now. its a weekend in August, may not be seen by many until tomorrow. But we'll have to start these fairly quick.

I've been busy as hell this summer, and that figures to only get worse here in the next few months, but I always find these things amusing and have my own stable of favorite covers. If you fall short by 1, I'll join up as always.

looking forward to getting this draft started. i'm digging through all sorts of fun and strange little covers in my music library...

With El Paljasso and Bricklayer on board that makes 15 island owners. If we can get one more participant, we can get this draft underway!

#26
I was planning to take a hiatus in this year's TDOS drafts, but if you are short one guy, you can count me in and let us get this draft rolling. :)

With the addition of dukeswh to the list, there are now 16 participants. I've sent the draft order (based on a random set of numbers generated by randomizer.org) to Jespher. Good luck everybody!

Question, do the covers have to be released on an album?
Not just albums, but live concerts with non-bootleg audio media, tribute albums, ect. are also draftable. See rule #1:
Released recordings are all fair game; studio, live concert, anthology tributes, etc., as long as there is continued audio evidence available to the public (in non bootleg form).

This is one of those drafts where I feel reasonably certain this song could have gone with the #1 pick no matter who got it. I'm very happy to be the one taking it to my island. With the #1 pick of the draft, I'm taking:

"All Along the Watchtower" -- the Jimi Hendrix Experience (on Electric Ladyland, 1968)
Originally written and recorded by Bob Dylan, 1967

Not only the best known cover of Dylan's original, Hendrix recorded what is probably the definitive version of the song itself. It is also the Jimi Hendrix Experience's highest selling single and their only top 40 hit in the US. Said Dylan of Hendrix's cover: "I liked Jimi Hendrix's record of this and ever since he died I've been doing it that way... Strange how when I sing it, I always feel it's a tribute to him in some kind of way."
