DRAFT ORDER:

7. hrdboild
8. whitechocolate

RULES:

You're in a beautiful cabin in the woods with a crystal clear lake nearby, fed by a gently murmuring stream. You spend your days fishing, communing with nature and truly enjoying the serenity.

At night, though, you find yourself wanting a little something to challenge your mind before you drift off to a quiet and peaceful sleep. There is no internet, there is no radio. There is a TV (nice 60" flat screen) but no broadcast/satellite/cable reception. There is a Blu-Ray player, however. You have the ability to obtain your 12 favorite films (never mind how you do it - details aren't important. :p) Hence we have the "TDOS Cabin by the Lake Movie Draft"...

Once we have the requisite number of participants, we will decide the draft order by use of the number randomizer. Once the order is determined, each person will in turn pick the movie they want for their cabin. By the end of the draft, you must have at least one movie from each of the following decades: 60s and earlier, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s. When you make your selection, you will also need to explain your pick. You are allowed to make your pick and then add your explanation at a later time to keep the draft going. All picks, however, must include some kind of write-up.

After the completion of 12 rounds, we will conduct the playoffs with Kingsfans.com members voting in each round until a ultimate winner is determined.

I am the commissioner. Registration, draft order, rule changes (if any), and any disputes/questions will be handled by me.

All movies must have been released in theaters. No made-for-TV, no Netflix, no Amazon, etc. Too many of those films just aren't available for everyone to view and it's hard to expect people to vote for a bunch of obscure films no one (except you) has seen. You cannot pick a trilogy as one selection. Each movie is stand-alone. In addition, you cannot pick a "director's cut" or other version of a movie if someone else has already selected a different version. You can pick a remake, however. NO PORN.

There is a time limit of 24 hours between picks. This becomes really important because of the worldwide distribution of our members. When you make your pick, it is up to you to send a PM (start a conversation) with the next person to draft so they know they're up. I will try to keep the board updated as quickly as possible. If the 24 hours expire, the pick goes to the next person. The missed pick may be made up, but only until your next pick comes around. At that point, the missed pick is forfeited. If you think you might be unable to post your pick in a timely manner, you can send it to another member of the board to post for you. Mr. S£im has volunteered to serve as picker in absentia. It is then their responsibility to notify the person who is on deck. Make sure you check the lists of selected movies. If you pick a movie that has already been taken, your pick is forfeited. I reserve the right to replace any participant who misses more than two rounds. In the event that happens, the new person will be allowed to make catch-up selections to catch him/her up with everyone else.

The draft will be NON-SERPENTINE. This means if you get #6 in the first round, you will have #6 in each subsequent round.

No trades are allowed. Once you have selected a movie, it's yours for all eternity.

JOKER PICK ADDENDUM: Our 15 registered participants will draft in the order determined by the randomizer as shown above. The 16th slot will be open to any registered member of KF who wants to participate, first come/first served. He/she will post their selection to fill that slot. The next round will commence and when the 16th pick comes around, any member EXCEPT the one who made the previous #16 pick will be able to post their selection.

If, at any time, someone wants to step up and become the 16th regular participant, they will be allowed to do so, inheriting the picks already selected and going from there.

EMBEDDING: Do not embed the full movie, even if you find it somewhere. In the past the Internet Movie Data Base (Imdb) has served as the common source for information about movies so a link to them will suffice.

Holy cow!!! I feel like I won the NBA lottery, but there is no true "LeBron James" to choose from. So many good movies I want to pick I'm not sure which way to go first. I never win anything, and now I win something where no matter what I choose, I know another half dozen (at least) of my favorite flicks will be gone by the time my turn comes around again. But I guarantee I'm not picking a Greg Oden.

I think I am going to start in the 1970's and get the granddaddy of the science fiction blockbuster flicks:

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076759/

I had to have me some Star Wars on the island and didn't want to get stuck with one of the prequels. ;) Ep. IV is still a favorite after all these years.

This is the movie that launched a universe and pop culture was never the same after. The stories about this movie are endless - everyone has their own favorite character, bit of dialogue, or scene that speaks to them. That, and the universally shared hatred of Lucas trying to "update" these flicks for the "special editions". No way, not for me. I'm taking the original theatrical version where Han shoots first. The special effects were unparalleled at the time. The scrolling text set to John Williams' score instead of the usual "credits" at the beginning is perfect. This is one of the most entertaining and widely enjoyed movies ever made. Ep. IV helped set the stage for all sci-fi movies to come by making sci-fi more mainstream and accessible to a wider audience. It helped start the summer blockbuster trend we all enjoy today. It set records for merchandising and is a prominent feature in Disney's parks and entertainment stable. In short, it is an icon and a masterpiece of it's time.

I would have gone for Star Wars (original 1977 theatrical version) with the first overall pick too. Can't complain about that one. Well I could, but it wouldn't be very sporting of me. :) I'm dying to see which direction VF decides to go here with the dreaded #2 selection. Don't pick a movie with bad knees!

With my first pick (and probably all my picks), I'm going with a movie I can watch time after time after time. In my lifetime I have seen more movies than I can possibly count. (Having a best friend who runs a video store is a blessing and a curse). So, without further ado:

Forrest Gump (1994)

1529084416534.png

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109830/

This movie resonates with me in a way few others do. Perhaps because I lived all those events and have so many memories. A simple yet complex story is told so beautifully that I'll stop what I'm doing to watch it. I know it would most likely have been here for round 2 but this flick sets the tone for my entire collection. I'm doing what I really hope Vlade doesn't do. I'm going with best fit over and above at least a handful of "better available". That's just me. I may add further details about the film itself at a later time.

So my first pick is not the best film I have ever seen, and will no doubt not be the best or most interesting film on my list, it IS however one of the films that I watch over and over and it never looses it's charm.

The Big Lebowski. 1998

1529086749897.png
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118715/?ref_=nv_sr_2

More a cult classic than top Hollywood film this film immediately connected with many of my tastes and interests. The brilliant acting and comedy often upstage what is essentially a tight classic well constructed Noir mystery. For those who have not seen the film in a while or some how have avoided it up until now, pay close attention to the plot twists, the up front use of the rug as McGuffin that is a tip of the hat Hitchcock, and I think you will see this film as so much more than an over quoted cult comedy. This a journey of self discovery concerning a man (Bridges) who in solving the mystery of a missing girl confronts his own life. When the Big Lebowski asks him "What makes a man?" the viewer is invited to examine the meaning of their own lived lives as reflected in the lives of the various charters who populate the film. For those who have seen the film several times the details are always a new treat (pay attention to Woo and his partners cloths) or the great Philip Seymour Hoffman's brilliant performance of Brant.
Enjoy!

Interesting choice! Robert Zemeckis has a knack for taking rather abstract concepts and breaking them up into little bite-sized chunks which feel effortless. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of this list come together. Also felt the need to point out, two picks and two USC grads. ;)

EDIT: Wait a minute, injury risk alert! Red flags! What did I just say!

I have been into art my whole life, and especially enjoy the storytelling aspect. When this movie came out, it was the exact kind of direction, cinematography, screenwriting, performance, style, and soundtrack that appeal to my sensibilities.

Pulp Fiction (1994)

Coming in from being a huge fan of the young John Woo, I was really intrigued by Tarantino's western stylistic approach and the mash-up of reality and hyper cinematic reality (or movie reality, if you will). And I was really pleasantly surprised by the audacious structure and how it turns the crime noir genre upside down and still keeps every part interconnected. The movie is so perfect, it almost makes you forget the crime Tarantino committed in his offensively hilarious acting.

Turgenev is next! (EDIT: PM sent)

Can you believe the first time we did this draft a decade ago, this title dropped to me in the second round? Absolute steal then - Pulp Fiction is 90s pop-art gold.

In fact, I should thank you for taking it early. Have to admit, I've soured on it slightly since the first draft due to a bit of over-saturation, but I'd be hard pressed to keep passing on it if it kept staring me in the face in later rounds.

Remember to notify the next person when you post your pick. A good way to remember is to always post "PM sent to _________". Do not do what I did once and post the "PM sent to" and then forget to send the PM. :p

With the 6th pick of the first round:

The Empire Strikes Back - 1980

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080684/

With a 2003’esque NBA Draft litany of amazing prospects to choose from, I definitely am stoked to be drafting in the 6th spot. Cannot get cute here though, and have to go with my all-time favorite movie...The Empire Strikes back. Such an amazing sequel, arguably the greatest ever.

A little nostalgia from the King (me, not Elvis), my grandfather made several VHS copy tapes for me when I was a child, the tapes usually had two to theee movies on each one. One of my favorite of these “burned” VHS was Star Wars A New Hope. I think I watched that VHS more times than I could possibly count.

I remember going to Blockbuster Video around the corner from my house, I could not have been much older than my oldest son (8) when I saw that there OTHER STAR WARS movies!!! By the force, I had no idea what I was about to see...I definitely made a vow that day to never let me own eventual children be in the dark about such things...

The force is strong in my family...and it is strongest in this film. The gold standard for science fiction films no doubt!

With the 7th pick of the first round (7th overall)...

Blade Runner (1982) -- Ridley Scott / Neo-Noir

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083658/

____For my money, Ridley Scott's neon psychedelia Future Noir of the early 80s remains the towering achievement in filmic world creation. It's a movie which transports me so fully mind, body, and soul into the plight of a workaday bounty hunter of the future, played by Harrison Ford with the grim anti-heroic determination of all the best noir leads, that I can't help but wonder if I'm recalling a past life or gazing into an alternative reality. Indeed if you were to point the camera at my face at the conclusion of that dramatic rooftop showdown with Roy Batty, I expect my expression would mirror Rick Deckard's blank, vaguely artificial gaze. Few and far between are the movies with the capacity to enrapture us like this! Piece by piece this film strips every signifier of personality away from Deckard until he has no choice but to admit to himself that he's no better or worse than the android prey he's hired to stalk. And in the process we are invited, as the audience, to undergo the same transformation.

____So much more than the sum of it's special effects, this movie to me is an experience of immersion therapy. Based on a novel by Philip K. Dick, the king of paranoid nightmare Science-Fiction, and adapted by Ridley Scott as a loose re-imaging of the 1940s Raymond Chandler classic "The Big Sleep", Blade Runner is steeped in the DNA of it's forebears. We get machines that measure empathy, machines that simulate empathy, machines that reject empathy down to their very core. But there's ultimately nothing all that exotic about these fabulous empathy machines popping up in almost every scene -- for what is the movie camera if not an empathy machine? It guides the eye so that we may see as others have seen. Aha! That giant eye looming over 2019 Los Angeles in the opening shot of the film may be more than just abstract symbolism after all. In summary, this is a movie I don't think I could live without so it has to be my first choice of this or any movie draft. It's all gravy from here on out because I've already got the one movie in my collection I absolutely had to have.

With the 7th pick of the first round (7th overall)...

Blade Runner (1982) -- Ridley Scott / Neo-Noir

____For my money, Ridley Scott's neon psychedelia Future Noir of the early 80s remains the towering achievement in filmic world creation. It's a movie which transports me so fully mind, body, and soul into the plight of a workaday bounty hunter of the future, played by Harrison Ford with the grim anti-heroic determination of all the best noir leads, that I can't help but wonder if I'm recalling a past life or gazing into an alternative reality. Indeed if you were to point the camera at my face at the conclusion of that dramatic rooftop showdown with Roy Batty, I expect my expression would mirror Rick Deckard's blank vaguely artificial gaze. Few and far between are the movies with the capacity to enrapture us.

Dick, the king of paranoid nightmare Science Fiction, and adapted by Ridley Scott as a loose re-imaging of the 1940s Raymond Chandler classic "The Big Sleep", Blade Runner is steeped in the DNA of it's forebears. We get machines that measure empathy, machines that simulate empathy, machines that reject empathy down to their very core. But there's ultimately nothing all that fictional about these fabulous empathy machines popping up in almost every scene. For what is the movie camera if not an empathy machine? It guides the eye so that we may see as others have seen.

GREAT PICK. That stings. I mean, really stings. It was set to be my first pick, as it’s my favorite film of all time, and the most important one to me. :(

It's my favorite movie too! See I knew there was a reason that I liked you. :) No worries, I'll invite you over to the cabin whenever you want to see it. I was already a little worried we share the same taste in movies actually, so I wouldn't be surprised if you snag a couple picks from me down the line.

PS -- PM was sent. whitecocolate is now on the clock.

I certainly wouldn’t begrudge a fellow Blade Runner fan for getting their first. I’m definitely hitting up your cabin when I need that fix.

Had Blade Runner slatted as my first or second pick. Honestly figured it would be gone before I got a chance anyway.
I have a feeling a lot of tears are going to be shed before this draft is over. My choices in these drafts (all different topics) have generally been off the beaten path so to speak. I'm actually concerned with this group of draftees. I've already revised my order of preference 3 or 4 times.
