Summer League Game 2 Even Quickier Grades

Bricklayer

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Casspi ( D ) -- just did not have it from the start in this one. Airballed his first shot, then bricked his first two FTs, was fumbling balls and involved in numerous miscommunication turnovers with teammates. Game 1 went to Omri, Game 2 to Donte in the SF battle.
Whiteside ( C ) -- early on had a couple of nice offensive moments with a nice facing bankshot, then a nice post move, but that was really kind of that and would play another 25 minutes without getting much done. Altered some shots that were not blcoked, but not able to get his one trick tricking, and again not a facrot on the glass. Got muscled out of a couple of late scoring opportunities. No impact.
Cousins ( A- ) -- an incredibly impressive outing that could almost serve as that "uh oh he's gonna be real good" moment that it took until Reke's 2nd game of the regular season against CP3 for him to have (or for us to notice -- with the scary financial withdrawal last year we were locked out from seeing most ofthis stuff last year). There was looseness, there was slop, but shining through all over was offensive talent the likes of whiich I don't think any other center n the league has right now. The big guy has a handle, as in a serious take guys off the dribble lead the break type handle, he has great court vision and some nifty on his passes, and this time out he didn't settle and used that big body again and againl slamming inside. Much credit too has to go to Mario Elie who is coaching him like a star big and repeatedly demanding our guards and forwards get him in the ball and let him got to work. There were probably 3 or 4 shots here that were forces, a few loose turnovers, but nothing that maturity and getting into an actual organized basketball setting won't fix. Ther was also a nifty no look pass to Omri, a center boarding at one end and leading the break on the other, a beautiful up and under, hook shots, snap passes to cutters, spin moves, and a constant relentless attack in the post and paint. And with his dribbling ability was able to maneuver down in there himself even when the d-league guards could not deliver it. No it was not NBA level competition, but he was matched up against Derrick Character all night, and Character has only been the best player in d-league until DeMarcus arrived, averaging something like 20-10 and chekcing in at 275 himself.
Landesberg ( B ) -- impressed with length and athletism and was attacking the rim consistently for most of the night. Got involved in a fun play in the first half when both he and Whiteside went up for the same flying tip duunk, and both guys ended up hanging off the rim. There have been numerrous Kings teams of recent vintage where we might not have had two guys on the whole roster capable of doing that, loet alone at one time.
Sloan ( D ) -- did a nice job on his first possession working to feed Cousins in the post, but the rest of his game was a struggle. Offense was forced and out of control, and he struggled against pressure bringing it up.

Downey ( B+ ) -- in the early going the notes could just have been "midget, no hope", but as the game wore on he began to have an impact with his quickness, and critically with his quickness on defense where he wwas able to pressure the ball and come up wiht open court steals. Unfortunately for him 5'9" is the average height for American maless, not for NBA basketball players, but to whatever degree it is actually inriguing, managed to add a little intrigue to our SL PG competition
Greene ( A ) -- played a very strong game looking like a man amongst boys on his way to 17pts in 16min. Was knocking down the open threes, and mixing in some real nice physical drives finishing throgh contact.
Thompson ( D ) -- largely invisible, only bucket woukld have missed if not for the Lakers tipping it into their own hoop. Late had a wild iopen court force but redeemed himself by gettign it back on defense
Chism ( A- ) -- just rock solid again. showing good range on his jumper, added a good
little post move as well. Just looked polished amongst the raggedness.

I've been on Ryan Thompson's nuts all week and I must beg you to reconsider giving Thompson a D. He was a +10 on the night while Casspi and Sloan were well into the minus.

I thought Casspi was great against the Pistons; real aggressive loved his game.

What happened last night; yikes!

but if Donte steps up everytime Casspi is playing butter fingers its all good!

Cousins though.... loved what he did in this game... apart from that college 3 pointer... get down low!

Went in, didn't it? And he was setting a pick and received the pass. Pick and pop. Realistically, for him to be able to do what he does inside and out, without being afraid of banging down low, I'm perfectly content with him stretching the defense like that.

Cousins is ridiculously talented and has great instincts. This game alone makes you wonder if there's anything he can't do on the court. Of course the NBA programming geniuses buried it at 1AM EST. :p

Yeah I'm ok with him taking q couple outside jumpers here and there (especially when they go in lol.) as long as he doesn't Spencer hawes it up and take 5 3's a game it's ok for him to develop his range and add to his skill set. As you said it spreads the defense and makes him tougher to guard. On an unrelated note I think your sig should reference Charlie Murphy not Eddie Murphy.

I'm just quoting what Rick James said. It was Eddie's couch he put his feet up on. Charlie just wailed on his legs for doing it.

I don't think that we have to worry about Cousins taking too many 3's, but I think the pick and pop with him and Tyreke is going to be a dangerous weapon. Tyreke can get to the basket whenever he wants, and if he can bring the whole defense with him then slide it out to Cousins to hit the 16-18 footer like Duncan then I think that they should incorporate that into their offense. The team's offense is going to be dangerously potent, Tyreke puts his stamp on games and after 2 SL games it has become apparent that Cousins puts his stamp on games too. You feel their presence. I honestly think that playoffs is a legitimate possibility as long as Dally can play his role of defensive stopper. If Dally can guard PF's then its all day and all night for this Kings team. Donte can spot up and slash, Beno/Cisco can spot up and slash, Tyreke/Cousins can punish the D and Landry/JT can play their respective roles. Gonna be a fun season.

How crazy is it that we've got a second straight rookie that looks like he'll be doubled and gameplanned against from day one? The Kings are not going to be an easy cover. Cousins looks like he might already have better awareness of the double-team than Webber did.

That was one of the things that really impressed me with Cousins when watching him play at Kentucky. He was an outstanding passer out of the double-team. He'd get doubled and find the open shooter time and again.
So far in summer league it looks as if he's trying to work his way through the doubles with a spin move, or pivot, and then pass it out if there isn't anything there, but he definitely recognizes the double coming and reacts quickly.

Cousins could easily start alongside of Dalembert, and I think he should. Landry could be the 6th man and rotate in for Sammy, moving Cousins to the center spot. Jason Thompson should get 20 energy minutes.

Cousins has so many skills I didn't realize he had. Despite being sloppy at times, his instincts and aggressiveness are at a high level. I liked how he sprinted up court a few times and pinned his defender in the paint on the break - but didn't get rewarded. Ball handling and passing have been a huge surprise - I bet he will even be on par with Monroe's passing but he gives a team so much more.

But my favorite part of Cousins game so far is his love to play basketball. You can just tell he love the game, and plays it with passion. Good times ahead.

I thought Cousins was a little erratic in the first half but settled down in the second and just dominated, which was good to see. He was a lot more in control and did most of his damage in the post. I didn't watch him much at UK but all the talk about him having good footwork and being agile for a guy that size is definitely true. Chism was great as well, I'm kinda sad we don't have room for him. Can't imagine him not making some NBA roster this year.

I thought Landesberg really showed up as well. Looks like there may be a nice roster spot battle going on between him and Ryan Thompson (of course it could all be for naught if we sign a vet).

I've been a little disappointed with Donald Sloan so far. I figured a combo-guard like him would flourish in the summer league but its not happening. Hopefully it has something to do with us focusing a little bit more on the big guys than other years.

Whiteside needs work on positioning for rebounds.
Cousins doesn't jump very high but always is in position for rebound. He's got very high basketball IQ. I'm glad the media ragged on him for redflags. That way he doesn't get cocky. If he stays humble, he's going to be a superstar. Great body and feel for the game and can is extremely skillful.
Chism is da man. I love this guy. How can we find a way to fit him in? I think we can.

I can hardly wait to see Evans and Cousins playing together. I think that may be some real fun! ;)

Edit: I really hate the new smileys. That's supposed to be a wink? Huh?

It is indeed a wink. I just verified with my electron microscope.

From what I've seen the last two games I'm modifying my expectations for Cousins from reliable 20-10 guy a couple years down the road to 20-10-5 guy. I knew he had an outside shot and a handle but the passing has caught me totally by surprise. I saw him throw some nice outlet passes in Kentucky but the no-look passes in the post have been, well, Webber-esque. And just when I didn't think I could get any more excited for the regular season to start.
