Strong indications Kings may be in Sacramento next year

At this juncture I doubt the Kings move. The Anaheim TV deal isn't spectacular like one was to lead believe just about 2 or 3 weeks ago.

The more information that comes out, the more desperate the Maloof's look. Their financial situation must be far worse than anyone realized. I guess the major question if the Maloof's end up staying in sacramento is whether everyone can kiss and make up. I suspect that would heavily depend on what the Maloofs say and do. In general most people are forgiving, and I also suspect that if they end up with a winning product on the floor, that will heal a lot of wounds. It will be interesting to watch it play out.

This appears to be just SI rehashing the Amick article we all know and love, so reason to rejoice yet - at least above and beyond what thrills Amick gives you.

It is an ironic game of poker. The Maloofs and Napear say that the financial picture is just fine, while the moves do look a bit desperate. What kind of hand are the Maloofs holding? Only they know I guess. But I think that I am with the majority in guessing that they have been playing a game of bluff.

As far as a mending of relationships, I do not think it will be a big deal. I think the fan base is fine and fans would really love to celebrate a winning Kings team that is still in Sactown. I know I would, but then again, I have really never been mad at the Maloofs - just the situation.

If Kings are "forced" back to Sacramento I think most fans will be forgiving as long as signing top free agents, resigning top players, remains the plan as Maloofs have indicated. But as you say, their financial situation may be so bad those good intentions may be just wishful thinking by everyone. If so, maybe selling the team to Burkle is best bet for the future of Kings in Sac.

CarmichaelDave just said when KJ met with the NBA officials today, he presented $9.2M in corporate sponsorships. Sound like another $2.2M was raised since the BOG meeting.

They money is going to be the problem, not the hurt feelings. Via Grant, the Maloofs have sworn up and down that they’ll spend money on this team starting next season. But they were might have been assuming they weren’t going to have to deliver on that promise in Sacramento, and could ride a brief honeymoon in Anaheim. Kings are having serious money issues, and their survival appears to have been predicated upon Samueli giving them some up front cash (more than one way) that permitted the Kings to work their was back to viability or sadly turn over the keys.

Next season will be fine, people will be excited about them being back and the (hopeful) approval of a new arena, cementing the Kings in Sacramento.

The issue is going to be the 2-3 seasons before the new place opens. Can the Maloofs last that long? Can the Maloofs come up with the operating cash to fund the constructions of a great team, before the team becomes great and the revenue starts pouring in? Because that’s how it works. I’m not sure they can. What happens in 2012, when the Maloofs payroll is low, free agents aren’t coming, money stories continues to swirl, and the fans have been told a billionaire wants to buy? (This story isn’t going away, Burkle had his rep in meetings today.)

The problems isn’t – boo, you tried to take the team away.

It’s – you guys are bad owners that are holding us back and you tried to take the team away – so you should sell to Burkle. If the team stays, not a huge problem. But unless the Maloofs crack open the wallet in a splashy way … its going to be a problem.

I think they get to the point where they need to sell and a lot fans want them to sell.

Larry, your post makes me wonder, what if the Maloofs get denied the move by the BOG then decide not to spend a dime on the team in protest? What if they purposely put garbage on the floor so they can both horde cash and pee off fans so the NBA has no choice but to move them?

This is all great news but I'm not ready to get happy just yet. We still need some kind of official work that the Maloofs aren't filing for relocation. Either that, May 2nd needs to come and go without them filing. Until one of things happen, I'll remain very cautiously optimistic.

That would be pretty obvious and Stern would never stand for it.

With Tyreke, Cousins, Thornton, and another high pick, they may be able to have a pretty good team over the next few years even without spending a ton of money. It's when those rookie contracts need renewing that they'll have to fork over some fat stacks.

If they did that they'd just be asking for the NBA to force them out as owners. The consensus is that they're broke already and a move like that would only further that belief.

but they would be doing it out of spite and they can just say "we wanna keep saving our money to rebuild" thing. And Stern wont care he wants the kings to suck anyway so lakers and all the other big markets can be winning the titles anyway

Which means they may become the Florida Marlins of the NBA where they constantly trade young talent rather than pay them.

Maloofs can't afford to put a poor product on the court purposely. If they were billionaires, maybe, but they are fringe millionaires who need the Kings to profit. A new arena won't solve all their moeny woes because fans won't pay good money to see a poor product despite a new arena.

Yup. They would bet cutting their own throats. It wont stop KJ from going forward, but attendance would fall to 5,000 a night. If KJ delivers the league says, umm, you can't move, and the only reason you are losing money is because you did it to yourself.

With where they stand, they would have two choices. Sell to somebody that would keep the team here (NBA will make that a condition if we have arena) most likely Burkle, or bleed out.

I this point, i'd just be happy to keep the team. After the last two months, I'll never take the Kings for granted again if they stay. Even if they're winning 20 games every year, I'll still appreciate them!

Two things. As bad as this draft is, they aren't going to set the world on fire next year.

And even if they were .500, if the team was selling "we don't have money problems, we are just waiting on the 2011 CBA" and if their payroll is in the 20s leaguewide, and fans know a billionare wants to take over the team, it will become an issue. Fans want to win and they know it takes money to win.

Its not just that your girlfriend is coming back but probably can't change, its knowing that a better option wants to take her place. That's a huge, long term, smoldering problem for the Maloofs.

From the Bee.

Earlier, Johnson and the NBA representatives met at the state Capitol in Sen. President Darrell Steinberg's office in a meeting that included City Councilman Rob Fong, West Sacramento Mayor Chris Cabaldon, Sacramento County Supervisor Phil Serna and Yolo County Supervisor Don Saylor.

The writing is on the wall here. KJ wants everybody to help, but Sacramento is looking to partner up with West Sacramento and their respective counties. Considering the rail yards arena would drive development in the rail yards and West Sacramento’s river front, it’s a good deal for all four. I’m pretty sure Cabaldon wants the intermodal transit station to have a street car into his town.

Of course the downside is that you need 4 government entities to finish a sprint to the end, where no single entity has made any headway.

However, this appears to be the framework of where they go from here. It hasn't been attempted before, so its new. And that would matter to the NBA.

That's good news. West Sac. got Raley Field built.

How can you predict how a team will perform when you don't know who is on the team?

we;; thats what were saying, that maloofs wont add any quality players because they wont be happy to be forced in sac

So we'll be right we were last year, essentially. All that really matters is that KJ gets an arena deal off the ground in the next year. If he does that, everything else will take care of itself in time. Also, I really don't think Stern would be too happy about disgruntled owners purposefully putting a bad team on the floor just to spite the NBA.

You are saying this despite the fact that the Maloofs have said they would spend money on free agents. They would be fools if they didn't make a major upgrade at the SF spot. If they don't, they can go to Anaheim with my blessings.
