  • Yes. But only if we swapped one of the core for him rather than giving up so many pieces.

Steve Francis

Okay, there is a name that I had not considered once this offseason. Not once. So what changed? Well 1) Orlando might be trying to make him into an OG, which got me thinking; 2) rumors are he might be on the block; 3) rumors are also that the Lakers may be interested, and that Odom is NOT part of the discussion. Which would mean Kobe/Odom/Brown AND Francis?? Could blow up spectacularly, but that's a frightening load of talent if PJ gets them all pointed in one direction.

Anyway, if Odom is not involved the absolute best deal I could see the Lakers come up with is Mihm, Bynum, Vlade and George. Think it works under the cap rules. Why would Orlando do that? Well, turns out they are setting themselves up to have a REAL big summer next year, with a bunch of major contracts coming off the books (Cato, Christie, Battie), you throw in Vlade and George and they clear $32 Million off the cap in one summer! Sign whoever they want. Meanwhile, they pick up a servicable young starting center to temporarily pair with Howard to give them a big big frontline, and they acquire a young giant who could one day team with Howard to form the most dominant frontcourt in the game (in theory).

Ok, enough about the Lakers/Orlando. Here is the question -- the best counter to the Lakers offer I could come up with for us that worked financially was Bobby/Tag/Martin and one of Skinner or Corliss or Kenny (Orlando choice). Bobby and Tag are ending contracts, while Bobby gives them at least a year of help at the PG while the kid grows and help at OG where they are weak. Replaces some of the physicality lost in Francis. Kevin becomes their young starting OG prospect (to be mentored by Doug again). And Skinner, Corliss or Thomas is the guy to make the salaries match. Let's just say Kenny because he is the most talented and youngest, and because Orlando has plenty of cap room and may not be as worried about his deal. Who knows whether Orlando accepts it (I wouldn't). But if they really want to clear Francis's salary and get some new stars of their choice next summer, suspose there's always a chance (and if the Lakers are somehow in the running wihtout giving up Odom, then this would not be entirely out of line). Then they could rename themselves the Orlando Kings! :) (Doug, Hedo, Bobby, Tag, Martin, Thomas).

So:
Bobby/Kenny/Tag/Martin for Stevie Franchise. Do you do it?

Plusses:
-- dynamic physical force, nearly unstoppable on the drive. Providing us with one of the traits we largely lack.
-- draws a ton of fouls. Something else we currently lack.
-- strong and with good size for a PG, so might be able to defend the OG positon adequately.
-- huge rebounder for a PG, be strong even for an OG
-- be a great passer for an OG. Also obviously be the backup PG, killing two birds with one stone.
-- would be able to share ballhandling duties with Mike, and let Mike play off the ball at times to maximize his shooting.
-- age 27, same area as rest of core. Bibby/Francis/Peja/Miller.

Minuses:
-- known as a selfish player, but perhaps being off the ball at OG minimizes the damage from a shoot first mentality
-- has the bball IQ of a rock
-- poor shot selection
-- turnover king as a PG
-- only 6'3", so we'd be undersized again. Although as noted Francis plays big.
-- chemistry. Francis has often been a walking headache. Literally.
-- Mobley factor. Any lingering issues?

Hmm... I think he'd be sort of "rich man's Cuttino Mobley." He's talented and athletic and a scorer, but he needs to dominate the ball to be effective, thereby screwing up the Kings' offense a la Cuttino. He'd be a pretty large defensive liability considering his height and lack of defensive intensity, especially since we don't have a defensive point guard (to put it mildly) playing alongside him. So there's that.

At the same time, he can really score, and would give the Kings someone who can actually create his own shot.

To me, it all depends on what happens with the PF position. If we can upgrade there either offensively or defensively it could work. If we get an offensive PF like SAR, we could overwhelm teams offensively like Phoenix (at least until the playoffs). If we get a defensive PF he could partially offset the defense problems. But I'm just not sure Franchise would square with the roster as it stands now.

P.S. Then again, if Orlando would agree to that trade and the trade didn't interfere with a deal for a PF I think Petrie would be insane not to do it.

There is that ;) ...I left off the "Bricklayer, you're an asinine homer for even suggesting such a one-sided trade" option from the poll for fear of gettign overwhelming results. :p Nonetheless, it intrigued me how the Lakers were going to try to pull that off without Odom + got me playing Fantasy GM again.

Bibby and Francis in the same team:(

Maybe we can get a frontline with Boykins, D.Staudamire a forwards and Corllis Williamson as a center (since he is used to that role anyways).

That would be fun to watch and we would need a new expression because midget ball would not cut it anymore

I've been entertained by these trade scenarios the past couple of days because certain players would be reuniting with old teammates. Such as Bobby backing up Jason Williams in Memphis. J.Will had a problem with his minutes here in Sac, and that was due to Jackson getting the nod over him during critical streches. Then theres Jason Williams backing up Mike Bibby. Both players were swapped for each other. In this case Steve Francis would be playing alongside Bibby, and Steve was originally drafted by Bibby's Grizzlies team. It was Bibby's team, and he was the PG, which meant Francis would have to play off-guard. He never liked that idea and forced a trade, thus starting his playing career with Houston.

Things could be coming full circle. And with youth no longer on their side, they might be more wiling to accept their roles. If this trade comes to fruition, and we can sign Rahim, we would have that promising Grizzlies team from 2000.

Does he play any D?
Nope.

He is a shockingly bad defender considering his physical gifts. Part of it I suppose is that while he has great straight line speed and acceleration as well as being one of the most explosive leapers in the NBA, his lateral quickness is pretty unimpressive.

Francis also has a VERY low BBall IQ for a point guard. He and Mobley comprised what I believe to be the biggest knucklehead backcourt of all time. Part of the reason Mobley was dealt was that he and Francis often played 2 on 5 for long stretches of the game.

Finally, one of the reasons Francis gave for whining his way out of Vancouver was that he was a point guard and didn't want to have to play shooting guard alongside Mike Bibby. Maybe things have changed for him at this point in his career, or maybe he just didn't want to play in Canada and that was his excuse, but I still find the irony of trading for Francis so he can finally play in the backcourt with Mike funny.

Packt,

I posted my response after reading the question about Stevie's defense, without reading to the bottom of the thread. Looks like I had the same thought about pairing him with Bibby as you. Great minds think alike I guess . . .

If you can get a player like Steve Francis for spare parts. You do it, no questions asked. Then, if chemistry does fall apart, at least you have another great talent as a piece of the puzzle.

his decisions as a point gaurd aren't that great, but he would serve as one hell of a shooting guard. 6'3 and extrememly strong. i would never give up bibby for him tho. i would definately trade him for peja and maybe miller if we could get Cato in the mix.

pg: bibby
sg: francis
sf: garcia
pf: cato
c: ostertag

not bad.

you would reallly want to do that? I would rather trade bobby martin and bibby to them for francis and somebody else because having bibby and francis on the same team would be horrible. Both of them trying to play point guard and steve francis tries to shoot the three ball too much and hardly makes it. so i would make a sacrifice resign house and start garcia.

Here's a riddle for y'all:

What do you get when you shrink Antoine Walker down to 6'3" and put Jamie Foxx's head on him?

As much as I hate Francis' game, and dislike his attitude, if we could somehow get him for spare parts I think we have to pull the trigger, if only for the fact that his trade value is as high as any of our core pieces. Then later on we package him for KG. :D

i don't know about looks, but this guy has some monster hops.

look at this crap. look at his head. we need this guy at 2 guard. after all, 2 guards are supposed to be selfish.

I remember two years ago or so, frustrated with Doug's shooting woes, Kings fans were pandering for a shooting guard that could actually hit a jumper. Now, after Mobley, people are hailing any offensive oreinted shooting guard as "selfish." Whether right or wrong, I just find that funnny how things have changed.

My gut reaction when I saw the poll question was "no way would I want such an odious gunner."

But the bottom line is, the NBA is all about talented players, and the Kings need more of them. As of this moment, they probably have only three guys who would be starters on many other teams. There was a time a few years ago when their second unit was a playoff team itself.

I think LPKingsFan hit it right on the head: spare parts for Francis? Why not? He'd be the Kings' most talented player, and if things didn't work out for whatever reason, you could still trade him (or Bibby or whomever) for something of value.

Oh don't confuse the two -- Francis appears imminently available. KG is a pipedream, but if you wanted Francis, Orlando would appear perfectly wiling to deal. Unitl I saw that Laker rumor, with Odom pointedly exempted, I would never have thought he was available for spare parts, but after looking at the Magic cap situation I can understand why. they clear Francis, they can go out and sign TWO big free agents next year to pair with Howard and any talent they get in the trade.
