Stan Van Gundy Resigns

MIAMI (AP) - Miami Heat coach Stan Van Gundy, who led the team to the best record in the Eastern Conference a season ago, resigned Monday citing family reasons.

A team official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the decision had not been made public, told The Associated Press that Van Gundy's resignation would be announced later Monday.

The team called a news conference for 11 a.m. EST, saying Van Gundy, team president and former coach Pat Riley and Heat owner Micky Arison would appear.

It was not immediately clear who would replace Van Gundy, but indications were Riley, who chose him as his successor a little more than two years ago, could return to the sideline.

Van Gundy's job status has been the subject of speculation in South Florida for months, starting when Riley — his mentor — said shortly after the Heat's 2005 playoff run ended that he decide to take a larger role in the team's day-to-day operations.

That comment, which seemed innocuous at the time, set off a storm of speculation that Riley was planning to dismiss Van Gundy and take over a team with two of the NBA's biggest stars, Shaquille O'Neal and Dwyane Wade.

Riley and Van Gundy eventually met for nearly four hours in mid-July. Van Gundy emerged from that session saying he was assured that he'd remain Heat coach.

But the team has struggled in its first 21 games, going only 11-10 - albeit without O'Neal for 18 of them while the 12-time All-Star nursed a sprained right ankle. Still, it wasn't the start anybody expected from a team built to contend for an NBA championship.

I jsut don't see GP hireing Van Gundy, just not his style of play. Unless the ax falls on GP first any coaching change will NOT include a change in play style and coaching philosophy.

That's an interesting little throwaway line, becaus ethat would have been entirely impossible as recently as a year ago. And still think it would require things to get considerably worse. But I do get the feeling that Geoff has been sticking his neck out here inserting himself as a deadening wall between frustrated owners and fanbase and coaches and players he does not want to move, and I do actually wonder how long he could really keep that up before the owners would get frustrated with HIM and directly confront him about it. Think there is plenty of good will built up, but also think Geoff has been burning through it here shielding people from impatient owners who would have made a move I think otherwise. Wonder how long that can contnue if we keep on struggling and the boos continue to rain at Arco.

riley is a really sly guy....

he pulls off the van gundy 'resignation' right in the middle of the artest fiasco....

wont be quite as big a deal this way....

miami will be a force to reckon with this year, mark my words...

I dont think the kings could get Stan "the man" Van Gundy. Coach Van Gundy wants to spend time with his teenage daughter. She is 14 and like he stated he only has 4 years left before she is out of the house.

I've been wondering about that lately. His moves have taken a dip as of late, but he's still pretty untouchable. I don't think he would be fired by the Maloofs. However, I think it's worth pondering how long GP sticks around after Adelman leaves. Most likely he'll resign himself. If you listen to him speak, he talks about management and coaching as a team, and rarely if ever says anything that isolates Adelman in a negative way.

How long does he have left on his contract? We might be expecting minor changes next summer, but instead get a complete changing of the guard.

Hmmm teenage daughter...figures thats like coaching an entire B-ball team with players having "Ron Artest" personalities.

Oh was NOT a throw away line, I DO consider Petrie to no longer be untouchable. As much credit as he got for the 2000, 2001 teams he also bears the blame for this fine kettle of fish. If he really has a plan and can convince the owners that this is a necessary transition team fine, I can even accept that as a fan, BUT loosing ain't good for buisness so he has to sell hard or start packing.

I don't see where people think we are going to get a new GM and coach that are just floating around out there that could SUDDENLY (Becuase thats what we're demanding, isn't it?) make a championship team. We're not even that far under .500, and we would be scouting coaches and GMs that right now are not even working for the Raptors or Hawks. I'll keep my trust in the guys that created one of the best teams in recent NBA history.

Geoff's move's are seemingly *not as good*, but they are the best move's he could make with the money that was available. The Maloofs have come out and said they don't want to be a luxury tax team, it's too costly. He's working with the money he has. I think he did the best job he could with the money available.

He addressed certain needs. Rebounding and defense, and a more offensively potent 2 guard. GOT IT. WE needed a replacement real power forward that could do what a power forward needs to do. For the most part. GOT IT, and a bargain price. The bench we needed a back up point guard within a price range, that could defend better and maybe give you some offense. Got the defense, and have you noticed the last few games Jason has been hitting a couple shots. He's starting to figure out where he can shoot. It will come. In the future Got it. We needed a back up 2/3. Got it in Garcia. Not bad for a rookie. Still makes some mistakes, but not bad at all for a rookie. We still have martin which I think will become expendable. Still have kenny to back up the PF, and Skinner to back up the 3. He did what he could.

I did not mean to imply that I see Petrie as "out the door" right now, I just meant in the words of Ricky Ricardo, "You got some splaining to do!"

Actually, the Maloofs haven't ever actually come right out and said that. It's been pretty broadly speculated and derived from their various moves, but I don't actually recall ever reading a direct quote from either Joe or Gavin about this.

The closest they've come, to the best of my recollection, is something about Webber's salary being too much a percentage of the total expenditure for the final year of his contract.

Is it just a coincidence that he retired right after Shaq came back?? Interesting timing! Didn't he realize his daughter was 14 while Shaq was still injured?
