SPDL update (6/21)

6th

Homer Fan Since 1985
I went to watch DMC (Bobby and Kevin's team) play against Doc's/Pro Med (Bibby and Matt's team) tonight. The bad news...Bobby and Bibby were both missing. The good news...Kevin and Matt both played.

There were about twice as many people there tonight as last week. I think most of the increase were kids. That, by itself, is fine. I love kids. What I do not love are irresponsible parents who sit up high while they let their kids sit down below by themselves, and then pay no attention to them whatsoever. Ack!!

The poor players were put into a PR nightmare. When there is a big crowd and all the kids want autographs, it was really nice for all the guys to sign shirts, basketballs, etc. The kids loved it. Now comes the stupid, irresponsible part...

The kids got autographs a little before the game. Then they all lined up at halftime and the guys kept signing some more. Then...the cute little kiddies disrupted the friggen game. Yes, everytime the guys went to the bench kids would run down with their pens, tap the guys on the shoulder, and want more autographs. Yes, during timeouts, the guys couldn't even talk plays because all these kids were in their face with their pens in hand. I wanted to scream at the parents to control their kids. The parents should know better. Ack!!! The guys couldn't say no to the kids without creating a PR nightmare for themselves and there was no security to stop this whole situation. I almost asked the guy with the microphone why he didn't say something. The dang game was going on.

BTW - the team I was cheering for (Kevin and Bobby's DMC team) won the game 140-139 in OT.

I would like to go again tomorrow night, but if parents are going to turn the game into a joke, I'm not sure whether I will. **sigh**

How unfortunate. My son was a real handful growing up, but I was always trying to control him. He certainly would not have gotten away with interrupting the players during the game. Geesh. I'd love to go see some of the games. I must really make the effort. (A whole lot going on in my life right now, taking up way too many evenings...phooey!:p )

It's gonna get a lot worse, considering the nice long article the Bee had on the front page of their Sports Section, hyping up the $5 tickets, etc. Unfortunately, I think they may have to end up with some kind of distance between the players and the fans, and that will be a shame for everyone.

I'd be willing to bet the players bring this up and at least get some kind of security to keep the kids away during the game. I hope so, anyway...

I hope the players say something to the "powers that be." They are the only ones that can really do something about it. I was sitting and talking with Jon Sheets (Univ of Maine and quite a shooter) after the game. He was rather unbelieving that it was allowed to get so out of hand. He said, "I can't believe we couldn't even have our time outs."

From what I've heard, the guy who runs the program is really devoted to the players. I'm confident that he'll take action immediately because this program is for the PLAYERS much more than the spectators.

I took the liberty of sending your post to a friend of mine who might be able to get the word out. ;)

Here are my first two pics of the night hope you enjoy ill had more late im sorting through them to see which ones are good and deleting the bad ones

What, they don't have those guys that sit backwards behind the bench ????

It is nice of the guys to sign the autographs .... but, what a zoo !!!

Not sure what the guy running the league can really do except to ask for everyone's help in respecting the players during the game and just posting some HOUSE RULES.
