SPDL Tidbits

I attended the nightly SPDL game tonight at Capital Christian HS. Just a few tidbits to report:

* No Kings in action tonight.

* The Kings continue to support the league financially, although at a much reduced amount than when the league was called the Kings Pro-Am League.

* It was reported earlier in the Bee that SPDL player and ex-Sac Stater Jameel Pugh got a try out with the Kings. Another SPDL player, Quemont Greer, 6-7 forward out of DePaul, also got a look-see by the Kings.

* Mike Bibby is done playing in the SPDL this summer season.

* Matt Barnes will play later this week and likely in Friday's all-star game against a San Francisco pro league all-star team. Game time is 7 PM at Capital Christian HS.

* Kevin Martin will play at least one game in league action this week and likely be named to the all-star team to play Friday night.

* It was confirmed that the Kings are talking to Matt Barnes about returning next season.

I came back from the game about a half an hour ago. Too bad Bibby won't be playing this week, but the kids had fun running out on the court during the time outs and shooting baskets. I didn't think Matt Barnes would play tonight because he hurt his toe at Thursday's game. It was still fun to watch.

I won't be attending Tues night, but I plan on going on Thurs night. I wonder if there is any chance that Bobby and Kevin will both be playing that night...or either one of them, for that matter.

With the expanded rosters now, we should definately have a place for Matt Barnes. It's just a matter of how much he's asking for. I'd definately love to see him back in a Kings uniform.

At this point I can't imagine Barnes not signing, seeing as without a half of last season he can't be in line for any kind of huge contract. Hopefully we sign him and he can develop into a solid player.

I spoke with someone last Thurs who told me that Matt's people were talking with the Kings. I didn't mention it since it wasn't confirmed. I will say that I got the impression that this person got it from Matt.

Although we need better starting talent to succeed, players with heart and hustle, like Matt and Darius, are what the core of our new team needs to be built around. It must now be a foundation, not a sidelight, of our team.

Has Philly renounced their rights to him? I was under the impression that they had until the 30th to make a qualifing offer that would make him restricted. Secondly, are they even allowed to be talking yet?

On the first part, I suppose that it could be understood that they would not.
