songaila will sign with bulls

Actually, I had forgotten what Alex posted - we don't have anything to use to sign him except the vet's minimum after we spent the MLE on SAR. Looks like it might have been a numbers game that just didn't work out in the end....

Still hate to let him go for nothing, but maybe in this case it was the best decision.

I wish Darius well as a Chicago Bull.

I think Petrie did the right thing and I believe it was a combination of factors - both good business AND not standing in the way for a kid who had done everything asked of him while in a Kings uniform.

well put, i think this articulates what i feel better than what i had wrote.

and at the very worst, GP tried, couldn't get anything in return, and is using some media spin on this. whatever the intent, he's being decent to darius.

No that is not what I meant. We had early bird rights to him meaning we could match any offers up to MLe without use MLE. The problem was is that we did not want any more salary and the teams going after Songaila did not have a trade excemption making a trade impossible given our fiscal restrants.

I think he's building his karma with Mark Bartelstein and maybe looking towards future trade. Perhaps KT for PJ Brown...

Its pretty bad when you buiild your Karma up with an agent only to find that the best he has to offer is PJ Brown. ;)

songaila is so over rated by kings fans its not even funny........ the dude was a decent bench player at best! hes a good player and i hope he does well for chicago

I must have missed the page in this thread where people were calling Darius an All-Star. Over-rating him? Is saying thanks for what he gave us putting too much value on him?

He played with heart and hustle, and I thank him for his time here and wish him all the best in Chicago and beyond.

good karma would be packaging both KT and Corliss contract for PJ Brown and a resigned Casey Jacobson...

the kings get rid of the massive contract of KT and Corliss $12.5mil contract... the kings get a hardnosed "enforcer" to backup SAR and Miller... plus the kings get a sharp shooter from 3-point range in Jacobsen...

while the Hornets get a new, younger starting PF and a capable SF tweener... especially since the hornets just lost their starting SF from last year, lee nailon...

A Big Plus for the kings would be they save 2mil+ or more on the salary cap and help avoid the luxury tax with this trade...

Wow, I just dont know how people just want to get rid of KT like he's trash or something...believe me people, KT will be worth more to this team in the long run than anyone we would get in a trade for him. I would definetely be open to a trade involving Corliss, however, even though we probably wouldnt get much in return, so it might not even be worth it due to his contract and the inabilities to get rid of him for nothing more in return than a 2nd round pick and a bag of doritos.

trash, no. Duplicative of existing talent and not what we need? Yes. Anvil of a contract for a tweener on the bench? Yes.

Darius gave it all on nights the rest of the Kings simply didn't show. I have a lot of respect for a player with his character. He will be missed.

That being said, while it is regretful that we got nothing in return for Darius (and Mo for that matter), I'm trying to reason it out by looking at the situation from another GM's perspective: 1) it is common knowledge that the Maloofs want to minimize salary cap hits and won't spend money superfluously.
2) Darius ws #3 on the depth chart at PF, #4 if sampson steps up and Skinner can switch back to PF, so it makes no sense for the Kings to spend on him.
3) Mo Evans established himself as an impact bench player last year, immediately placing him in a price range that it was publicly stated the Maloofs didn't want to pay.
SO: why would any GM with the small amount of $$ necssary to outbid the Kings for a restricted free agent entertain ANY notion of giving up some talent, no matter how small? I just don't think there was anything for Geoff to bargain with, no chips.

I'm not an expert, so call me on it if I'm full of BS.... I won't be offended I promise! Just trying to wrap my head around it from a different angle.

they already got him suited up on chicagobulls.com

Bulls sign Songaila, wait on Curry

September 23, 2005
DEERFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The Chicago Bulls signed free agent Darius Songaila to a two-year contract Friday that will reportedly pay him $2.2 million next season.

Songaila spent two seasons with the Sacramento Kings, averaging 7.5 points and 4.2 rebounds last season.

The 6-foot-8 Songaila has an option for 2006-07, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

``He is the type of player and person we desire,'' Bulls general manager John Paxson said. ``His level of skill will strengthen our already solid front line.''

That front line includes the recently re-signed Tyson Chandler, free-agent acquisition Malik Allen and perhaps Eddy Curry, who is an unsigned restricted free agent.

Curry missed the final 13 games of the regular season and the playoffs because of an irregular heartbeat. The Bulls have the right to match any offer, but other teams have shown little interest in Curry, who averaged 16.1 points and 5.4 rebounds.

Paxson said Curry must take more tests to rule out health issues before he puts on a Bulls uniform.

``We've done everything in our power to be protective of Eddy, show our concern and passion for him,'' Paxson said. ``All we want to do is get as many answers as we can get. It's coming to a point where next week, there's going to be a decision made.''

Curry's agent, Leon Rose, did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Totally agree with you.

I'm going to miss Darius. He stepped up in C-Webb's absence. He fits right in with the Bulls, I'll have to admit. Darius reminds me a bit of Andres Nocioni. He did well against the Wizards 1st round of the playoffs. There's a bit of jogjam at the moment with all their forwards though. BTW, what's the status on Eddy Curry? Is he gone yet, or is he staying?

Do we need Eddy? I mean we got Skinner, Corliss, Thomas and now Jamal, do we really need him???

Eddy's in a different class from any of those guys. Not on production alone (where Thomas might be able to rival, maybe), but on size/youth/big time scoring potential. He's somewhere around a Top 10 center at 22 and one of the best post scorers in the game. Lot of questions, but also far more potential to be a special player than any of those guys you listed. Skinner/Thomas/Corliss/Sampson are the sort of guys you fill out a bench with -- dependable vets (or not so dependable ones in Sampson) who are as good as they will ever be. Curry is the hole shot at getting a major young player. Extremely unlikely to ever do it in the draft if you are us. If there is to be a next generation of young Kings once all of our nearing-30 starters start to slide, it will have to be acquired via trade.

Right now Eddy Curry value is probably the lowest it can get, and he's still pretty valuable. Best time for a team to snag him, if the Bulls don't keep him.
