hmm.... well it couldn't get worse could it?

the more i read or hear about Smart the more he seems like a mirror image of Westphal? crazy rotations, unorganized offense ... not using a style that works with the players he has...

im a tad worried this could get worse before it gets better if the players resist Smart or if Smart loses the team just like Westphal...

then what?

I'm happy about this. It's a short season anyway. Give Smart a chance to prove himself here like he did in GS. If it doesn't work out, then go try to coax Sloan or JVG out of retirement.

Hopefully, he will be able to get the team to improve on the league low 13.7 assists/per game. I would hope that Jimmer could get 13 assists by himself.

Perhaps most laughable is the fact that Tyreke leads the team in assists with 3/game.

That whole thing is so skewed. Just last April this same team, perhaps critically with Beno instead of Jimmer but still, was averaging 21apg for the month, that was with Reke and Thornton and Cousins all in the lineup. So I exepect that 13.7apg to go up rather dramatically once we go back to actually having something workable again.

I don't know. In that end of the season press conference he talks about being more physical, better rebounding. Maybe that was just Warriors' talk and he thinks Kings have too much rebounding or physicality but at this point I think we should wait and see.
P.S. Last season he was slammed by Warriors fans for not playing Udoh but he's averaging 1 or 2 minutes less this season.

I hope we don't have to see any more 3 guard line ups.

Hopefully Demarcus starts getting at least 30min a game.

Jimmer needs to get his minutes cut to 20 a game. Enough to develop but not too many to where he hurts the team.

Hickson needs 25-26min a game.

Offense needs to be installed. No matter how simplistic...it's better than nothing.

And get these guys to get their asses back on defense after a missed shot.

He will coach us for 2 years - WOJ Yahoo 2 year guaranteed deal.

So we already stopped the off season coaching search? Why?

Hope it works out with Keith, but if it doesn't.....

2 yr guaranteed deal is premature to me. If we look good in March, then maybe extend him. But this seems like premature settling to me, and something owners unwilling to spend would do. For christ sake, he hasn't even held a practice with the club yet. If you're this ready to offer him 2 yrs guaranteed, then why did Westy return in the first place?

I guess he interviews really really really well.

but surely the opportunity was there to give Smart at least this season to see his direction.

Maybe Smart just said that isn't for me, you either sign me or I'm walking.

Possible. Could see him saying, hey, you need me more than I need you, and I am not walking into a lame duck situation.

Maybe he had a really nice powerpoint.

I'm guessing that could be an angle considering his experience at GS.

They have a press conference shortly so they'll obviously announce it.

It's just so quick; how do they even know Smarts plan? without behind the back meetings, it's just odd honestly.

The first thing that comes to mind is stability. You can't allow the situation to continue to spiral out of control and after the disaster of the last week the new coach can't be seen as a lame-duck coach. If it doesn't work out, you eat the loss.

I still hate the idea, that if we're so damn sure Smart is worth a 2 yr guaranteed contract, then why did Westy return in the first place? Why did we trust Westy's word and go after Salmons/Hayes/Outlaw?

This organization smells.

Keith Smart has agreed to a two-year coaching deal with the Kings, source tells Y! Sports. Agreement guaranteed through the 2012-'13 season.

Are we already committing? This doesn't make immediate sense.

I agree. Its embarrassing looking at responses from the national media. It just gives off the appearance that we don't have a clue what we are doing. They kept a coach that had well defined issues, spent much of their available money bringing in guys the coach wanted, supported the whole messy Cousins situation, then sacked the coach less than a week later, then handed a guaranteed deal to a new unproven one.

We're now stuck with players that don't make sense together, a toxic and public mess with our young center and a new coach that may or may not work out but is going to get paid either way.

I don't know who the cause is (Petrie or the Maloofs) but I sure how it stops soon.

Might be a team option for year 2. One thing it does is give Smart a bigger voice. Players can't think he's a lame duck and they don't have to listen to him.

That's what I was thinking too. Don't want a "You're not my real dad!" situation undermining Smart in the locker room, considering the disaster it became under Westphal.

You know, I'm happy the coaching thing was addressed and Smart got the job and then it was set in stone for two years. For those who wanted Westphal's head, you got it and a new coach. Be happy. Let's get on with it. I enjoy this site every day but I do get awfully tired of folks that can't live with somebody else managing the teams affairs. I know that is the purpose of this site, to let off steam. So I'm doing it.

Depends on what kind of money we are talking about here. In order for Smart to even have a chance to have the players support long term, he has to not carry the stigma of being interim. A two year contract does that. But if the money is fairly small by head coach standards, and that has been the way the Maloofs work. Then it's a cheap option to cut him after this season if it isn't working out. Most people thought Smart would get the rest of the season anyway. Think of this as a bonus for him stepping up to the job. It's not in anyway precluding them for being in the market for a bigger name coach this summer.

PS. It was really difficult not to call this... a Smart decision. :)
