Small Forward Free Agency Riches

Why choose between the two? Millsap is a PF and Korver is a SF.

I'm not saying that they must choose between the two, but with the return of both Boozer and Okur, the Jazz will be over the luxury tax threshold even before attempting to sign Millsap. So there may be financial reasons to either let Millsap go, or try to get rid of Korver without taking back salary.

Note: I started this thread well before the draft (the day Hedo opted out if I remember right). That was before we added yet another SF guaranteed contract in Casspi. With the Kings clearing cap space at the deadline I was wondering which top level free agents would be available, and I was surprised to see so many of them being small forwards. Just our luck, eh :(?

The Kings biggest need now is a back-up center. They even have enough guys to play the 4 if they use some of their small forwards in that role. Right now Spencer and JT (to some extent) are the only players on the roster capable of logging NBA minutes at center. They should be trying to add that piece through free agency or via trade. We have another thread about that subject here.

If/when Ike Diogu is resigned he should only be used as a PF. He should never play any minutes in the NBA as a center unless he is playing garbage minutes or against the shortest front lines in the league. He is not the answer as a back-up center!

I totally disagree. He's much more of a center than a pf. The Kings played him at the 5 and that's where he shined. He doesn't have the quickness to play a lot of 4s in the league, but there are very few centers that can root him out of the paint.

Thing is Smith is and has always been a 3 playing ou of positon at 4. he;s way way too small for a PF. Just plays there because of Atlanta;s softness and his unwillingness to work on his game. He is an idiot though.

I don't see it that way. He's formidable on the block. When he goes to 3-land, his effectiveness goes down. I'm not sure either about his ability to guard a lot of 3s in this league. I agree with you though on him being an idiot. Right now, the Kings don't appear to have any idiots. Maybe we can keep it that way.

PS I think Smith is going to be one of those guys who never fully realizes his potential because he is an "idiot", and he's going to create fairly constant frustration for coaches, teamates, and fans because of it.

And its the fact that he's an idiot that steers me away from him. With a young team, you don't need any type of poison pills. I do think, because of their youth, the team needs some lockerroom leadership. I don't see it coming from Martin, but who knows, maybe he's more assertive off camera. Thats where someone like Hedo, who would be respected, would be valuable. Maybe Hawes. Its his third year, and he's certainly outspoken. But someone needs to step up and take control.

I think Hawes and Thompson have that potential. They might be a year or so away though from realizing it.

I love Millsap and the toughness he brings. I think the guy has A LOT of potential. But, for everyone who wants him, what would we do with JT and Hawes? Millsap is too talented to come off the bench, and I don't see him agreeing to come off the bench.

being a SSF doesn;t mean being a 3pt chucking wuss, althoguh in Smith's case of course his failutre to improve ontnhat portion of his game is a major problem (as is his insistence on tkaing them anyway). He is NOT a post player, not against PFs. He's a slasher. Classic SF. Nor does he have the strength to contend with PFs on the block back the other way. Its the Gerald Wallace situation. He's a physical force at SF, or should be. A guy who has even played OG. Then you put him at PF anad instantly get soft as he gives up 50 lbs some nights.

I think it could ultimately come down to how many more years does Boozer have on his contract. I am guessing only one (but haven't looked it up). If that is the case, then I think Utah bites the bullet for a year to insure they have a PF after Boozer is gone.
