[News] Schröder/Russ backcourt for Monk trade? Uberthread

Kings fans will really be like “gut the roster and get rid of everyone! I don’t care. Tear this thing down to the studs!” And then immediately be like “but don’t get rid of this guy or this guy and also make sure this other guy gets a big extension!”

There’s going to be more pain ahead.

Come on man if we were tearing the team down and rebuilding nobody would care we’re trading monk for ****ing Dennis Schroeder and want to sign westbrick while keeping Derozan and Lavine

I'm thinking its along what @Tetsujin is saying where we don't want to do a Process so much as a soft reset. If we acquire picks as we move players no longer necessary (and maybe picks or other compensation is what is holding up this deal?) we can rebuild without having to tank, especially since the lottery has not been kind to teams trying to blatantly Hinkie lately.
There has been no talk of picks coming to us. If Monk is a negative asset as folks claim, it means we are more likely to send out picks to get off his contract.

The problem is it doesn’t appear Monk is an asset. He expected to leave in free agency according to Dlo and in his own words “money dried up”. No offers. Scott then tried to trade him but couldn’t find a taker. If he doesn’t fit the vision (small non defender) and isn’t returning value in a trade then the only option is to get off the money. He’s a good player but if the kings would rather have Lavine/Keon/Carter it is what it is.

We’d rather have Keon but not resign him haha
Anyways why can’t monk be on the team as a bench scorer? He doesn’t fit but the guy dribbling around for 20 seconds to shoot a fadeaway mid range does. Why does Sabonis fit what we want? No team can be taken serious with a center that plays no defense and isn’t really a scorer

Something like:

Year 1- middling team, bloated contracts, stop gap vets, a few young pieces

Year 2- all but a few of the vets are gone. Keon, Keegan, Carter, Nique, Maxine, Sabonis plus lottery pick.

Year 3- big swing
I don't like it but it follows the "gap year" nonsense and the Knicks chronology a bit. But it will be pretty clear if that's the direction soon enough and I can live with it if we start acquiring draft capital.

There's been no clear talk about anything other than the deal is held up because we think its a sign and trade. I'm sure its not so that we can figure out how to give Denis 20 million though looking at the rest of the deals around the league right now being a lot more 3-7m/per deals.

Last summer, it was reported that Orlando and at least one other team had offers ready to put on the table, but they never got the chance, due to the sweetheart deal Monk signed with Sacramento. This season, it was reported that Toronto wanted him, but that was before Masai Ujiri suddenly was fired (great timing). The Knicks also reportedly showed interest within the past month. The market for a sparkplug off the bench who can pass and score at three levels is never "dry."
Wrong, Orlando resigned Pope and Harris that took their cap space. Monk was those teams backup plans not the primary target. When he realized he wasn't getting an offer he took the Kings deal before the Kings focused on his replacement and rescinded the QO.

I don't think they had a QO on an unrestricted FA but yeah most likely they knew Monk's market was dry but the Kings thought they were getting a steal from a guy that wanted to be here. Though Fox had flat out said take the money and run.

Keon will be re-signed in all likelihood. Deebo isn’t a long term play either.
Sabonis has to have a certain team built around him, we will see if Scott goes that route.

You are a proponent of blowing it up right? There is a good chance Scott is doing his version of that. After next year, Deebo (bought out) Jonas (option declined) and Russ will likely be off the books (unless we surprise and win 50 games next year haha) that will just leave a expiring contract (Lavine) and Sabonis for vets. Everyone else should be younger two way players that fit the vision.

I'd rather salary dump Monk than what's being proposed right now. Then you'd have a clear run-way for Keon and Carter
Exactly. "Blowing it up" by bringing in vets who block the development of young players is how you stay entrenched in purgatory.

Also, for the nth time, we're not blowing it up. We're trying to win now with short-sighted stupid moves. Jeez, the gaslighting is real. I can understand the media suckups doing it but not my fellow fans doing it.

Trying to be realistic about what sort of value we could get here. Maybe a pick swap and a couple of seconds? I went with two but the Pistons have a LOT of random seconds to throw around. Ideally instead of a swap, that would be a protected first or something but that honestly might be asking too much. Threw Bobi in there as a prospect swing but it can be done without him.

The Knicks traded Porzingis (and THJ) coming off of an all-star appearance as a guy still on his rookie contract for DSJ, Deandre Jordan, and a couple of picks when Scott was there just to give an idea of the sort of pain Scott is willing to inflict on his fan base to enact his vision lol
My feelings for this team totally died near the end of last year. Just felt like a completely hopeless future. I’m all good on him making bold, tough, unpopular choices….just as long as they aren’t dumb.

Did he tweet Fred Rogers platitudes while executing these maneuvers?

Also If we are really wanting to try and bring in a culture, and we want to tank, but realistically we don't want to "blow it up". Couldn't we do something like LaVine for Dame?

What better vet to have than Dame. And he comes back next year healthy to play with Sabonis for a year before walking. That clears the guard glut for a year, and lets the team figure out a plan.

The Bucks have to want Zach.

Blowing it up after this years draft is typical kangz move not even gonna get into it anymore about building a team around Sabonis just laughable stuff

Reports say we are currently $17.9 million away from the luxury tax before signing Schroeder. If we signed him straight up, we’d be about $3-5 million away which limits what we could do after the signing.

Sign and trading Schroeder for Monk in a vacuum is a horrible trade. But doing so would expand that space to around $22 million, which gives us the ability to add additional salary to the roster.

If (a very big if) Perry can make good use of that salary then making that move isn’t necessarily a bad idea. For example, looping Golden State into the deal with Detroit would allow us to send the Warriors DeRozan for Kuminga.

I think Perry will try to sell win now pieces (Monk, Levine, DDR) for picks. If he can get 5 picks in the next 3 drafts with those 3 guys i think he pulls the trigger. If he can move Sabonis and get another 2-3 picks for him, all the better. Runs Shroeder/Westbrick, Keon/Carter, Keegan/Nique, potato chips, Valanciunas for the bottom spot in the NBA and a top 3 pick.
If we get rid of all our main guys, why trot out Dennis/Westbrook, or even Val? Trade/buy them out and go young.

Yeah this is gross. You don't trade one of your better players just for the sake of trading him. This trade would make the team older, worse and less entertaining. Not to mention it would pee off the players on the roster since Monk is obviously a favorite of his teammates. Peak KANGZ right here if a Schroder swap is all we get for trading Monk.
I get why people would be angry about it and I certainly don't like it but I just don't think this is what's going to happen. Feels like if a deal goes down, it'll be something that hasn't been reported. Could be wrong or I'm just hoping we don't trade Monk just yet lol but we'll see
