SAS on Sportscenter-Kings looking to move Bibby...

Nope. Not even...

Never a good thing to start your post by making a generalized statement about the fans here - or any other message board for that matter - as they can change their minds within the course of a game, let alone a season.

You're much better off to go with your LAST statement.

The Maloofs just want to get rid of expensive contracts. We're not winning!!!!! This could be a hint of selling the team also. So WATCH OUT!!!!!
Dont know how accurate you are in your theory there, but I do think that the Maloofs finally realize the power of 're-build', and I think they probably saw that last year when they started in a new direction by not keeping Adelman. I think they are probably on the phone with GP a few times a week talking offseason stratagies...it's 1998 all over again! And thats a good thing!;)

totally true... people are even suggesting we trade Bibby for Jason Williams

how cool would it be to start over with Jason Williams... again

Wow. I hope you didn't hurt yourself in your leap off assumption cliff...

The Maloofs are probably much more aware of the cyclic nature of the NBA than a lot of the fans around here. I don't think there's any logic to that kind of conclusion at all.

Why all the Bibby hate?

Mike Bibby is a fanatastic player and very very clutch. It's not like he's on the downslide of his career, he is still young. there are not many good PG's out there that we can get. He has been dissappointing this season, but that doesn't take anything away from him being a terrific player. he can shoot jumpers, hit threes, assist, and do it all in crunch time. he is arguably the best player on our team, it would be a very bad idea to let him go. how many times have we seen him come through for us. how many times has he pulled us through the playoffs, and have you all forgotten what he did in the lakers series? thus i ask, why all the bibby hate. it's the players around him who are holding the team back.

i don't hate him. he seems intent on opting out which most likely means he wants to test the FA market or wants more $$$. I don't know if we want to pay him more $$ with the direction i believe the kings want to go. it would be better to shed his contract onto another team who could actually use him while getting something useful for the team in return (young player, picks or capspace)

many people on here agree that we need to rebuild by going young, getting good draft picks, etc. Bibby just doesn't fit that. he's not enough of a leader to really help develop young guys, but he's enough of a leader to really contribute on a playoff team. plus, getting rid of him clears cap space. if the Kings do rebuild and they want to spend $12-13 million a year for a good veteran point guard, then it should be on Chauncey Billups when he becomes a free agent this summer, not Bibby. that's my opinion at least

I am one of those people.. When going young a guy like Bibby isn't enough of a lockerroom guy or a teacher. Put him on a team that is almost there, and they can win it all... Put him on a bad team and he will just become another body. If only Bibby was like Corliss leadership wise... ugh.

Well, I dont know about gettin J-Will back, and I think we can get a bit more than just J-Will in return for Mike, but I'm up for a fire sale this offseason, thats for sure:D

Bibby is a shooting PG. He's not a distributor like Nash or Kidd. He fit best in the system with Vlade and Webber being distributors. Now, only Miller plays that way and only when he's in the game.

Mike is a quality player, but only plays defense when he's fired up to do so and that doesn't happen often enough. I think Mike would be great for Orlando but I don't think he fits best on our current team.

Now that we are younger and more athletic, we could really use a PG like Kidd...sigh...

IF mike decides to opt out this summer, this rumor is all moot anyway, right? we get his contract off the books and become players in free agency.

IF he does (and that's a very big "if"), he will be one of the few big names available. It's not like it was several years ago, everybody signs their best guys to extensions lately. This summer's FA market is not looking exciting at all.

And we let him go for nothing.

this summer already has chauncey billups, vince carter, and rashard lewis out...that's not too shabby. but this thread is all about bibby for hill's expiring, so i fail to see how, if he opts out, we "lose him for nothing" when people are talking about trading him for an ending contract. we don't "lose him for nothing," we get cap space for a rebuild.

Right... but Carter and Lewis don't fit our roster. We need a PF/C and a backup PG, or two PGs if Bibby walks. We might be able to get a fine PF/C in the draft, unless the team rallies us into a 11th-13th pick, as many seem to expect. What then?

FA bigs are Varejao, Mihm, Brezec, and several guys in walkers. Ryan Gomes and Ronny Turiaf are at least semi-available, but not really big enough to suit our needs.

FA PGs are Billups (assuming he takes his ETO), Mo Williams, maybe Boykins... and a number of oldsters or Hart clones.

And all of the NBA is going to be fighting over those guys.

If we wound up with Varejao, Williams and some money left over, that would be great -- but it also seems quite unlikely. So no, I can't get very excited about this year's FA market.

And what if Bibby and Muss both stay? Yuck!

you do realize that if the kings traded mike bibby for grant hill's expiring contract, they don't need to immediately sign anybody, right? they can ride their cap space out until they see something worthwhile. that might be another year or two. nothin' wrong with going into a season under the cap if you're in the middle of a rebuild. that kinda cap space is also good for re-signing guys like kevin martin so that you don't push yourself over the luxury tax threshold.

You can also use it in trades or to facilitate other team's trades.

Isn't Bibby opting out this summer and us trading him now for an ending contract the same thing in the offseason? ie: we clear $13.5M off the books that he's scheduled to make next year?

I think people need to remember that Bibby has a two year ETO. I strongly suspect he'll wait until next year since his market value hasn't appreciated this season.

If he's traded before Feb. 24, it could still pose problems for his new team at the end of this year...and next. The best option for teams looking to acquire him might well be for them to wait until he's either exercised the option or accepted an extension. At least that way they wouldn't have the sword of Damacles hanging over their heads...

Mike is definately paid well. I agree, how Mike playing this year, he'd be pretty crazy to want more $. If anything he would want to go and get a long term deal while he's younger now than wait 2 more years. Getting a little less each year now for more years might be better than getting the huge $ now and not getting a nice long deal when it's done.

I suspect one thing that might be preventing him from doing that is the whole Bonzi Wells situation. Mike is guaranteed a LOT of money for the next two years. If he opts out, he runs the risk of dropping down quite a bit. There are currently only 24 players in the NBA making more money than Mike. I don't really see him wanting to walk away from that until/unless he knows the Kings don't want to extend his contract.

Yeah, if they will take Bibby for Hill, all that is true.

But without any other likely way to utilize much of that money this summer, then we're probably talking about sucking our way through a rebuild process which continues until at least July of 2008, and while some might not mind that idea, I don't think its appeal is 100% universal.

In the event of a minor miracle, like getting a starting-quality rookie PF/C and a good coach this summer, it's not at all inconceivable that The Old Bibby could make a reappearance. And what-ifs like that keep this from being a clear and easy decision, even if Orlando wants Bibby, which may or may not be so.

I'm not saying that unloading Bibby in one way or the other is necessarily a bad idea, it's hard to know what decision would end up being best. But I do think that most people aren't going to be excited about possibly spending a year with the PG position even weaker than PF is now, in return for nothing more than lower payroll.

The Grizzlies appear to be trying to wait out the Bulls. Pau Gasol said in the Spanish media last week there is a secret Western Conference team behind the scenes. It's not Portland. There has been speculation about the Clippers, Warriors and Kings.

Just say no to Gasol.

Oh, there's a reliable source. I don't know which is worse. The "secret Western Conference" team reference or the fact the Trib picked it up...

;)

Just say no to Gasol.

Why in the world would you say no to one of the very best players in the game? Especially in a position that is our weakest. I would trade any player or combination of to get him to the Kings. He is an impact player that you can build around for years to come.

Years? Try 2-3. He's 27 years old and in his prime NOW so you can't exactly build a team around him.

Oh I can see it now.

Pau:"I want out Jerry... I just can't take the losing anymore. I want to go to a contender or a team I can make a contender. The losing is just unbearable."

Jerry: "Well Pau, I just got off of the phone with Geoff Petrie, and you're headed to Sacramento... Congratulations!"

:zooms in on Pau's face: {wah wah wahhhhhhhhh}
