SAR coming to the Kings discussion (merged)

Malone didn't have that jumpshot for most of his career. He only started developing it at the time when everyone had written them off based on their age and then they made it to back to back Finals.

If you want to be a star maybe. That's not what we are talking about here. The traditional "core" attributes of PFs are defense and rebounding -- the things you would ALWAYS like a guy to have. In the modern era a new breed of super-PF has appeared, and now guys with shooting and ball handling can become stars. But those are not huge traits for rank and file gruntwork PFs of the roleplayer class. Give us defense, give us boards, and you're already a very useful PF.

Reggie Evans has no jumpshot. You don't want Chandler shooting many either. Nor Etan Thomas. These are the class of guys that a) we could use; and b) that it would be very nice is Skinner belonged to.

I agree completely with Brick. I would hope that Skinner could become another Evans or Thomas or even Chandler. Another nice that about Skinner is that he's a smart guy and he's got a pretty high basketball IQ. So, assuming that Skinner can play backup PF, that would leave them only with Sampson to back up Brad unless there's a proven backup center to be had.

With a lineup already loaded with offensive players, there is no need for Skinner to be taking jump shots. Skinner's role should be to help us beat other teams by playing defense and rebounding. If anything, he should work on a half hook or moves around the basket, so when he grabs an offensive board, he can put it back up.

I still don't agree. You need to have some type of outside game. He has none. Also, a power forward should be able to drive and draw fouls. Skinner is horrible at free throws, so him drawing fouls is useless.

Not when your center is Brad Miller.

Rodman with a low post game is our dream PF. How was his jumper?

We need weakside help, rebounding, man to man D, and offense for our PF. In that order.

Exactly...we need to get away from the idea that we have to have offensive firepower at every position. We need role players badly. We have so many players with skills that allow them to "swing" between positions...the "tweeners", so to speak. I'm not crazy about a team that has to share the ball between all five positions (which is what we have at the moment). We just need a big bruiser with some attitude that will board, block some shots, and punish people like Ginobli and Kobe when they enter the lane.

Im not sure is this has been posted. I looked back about 5 pages, and didn't see it.

Aug 12 Abdur-Rahim's agent, Aaron Goodwin, said three teams are in the running for his client, but the Kings are close to landing the free agent power forward, the Sacramento Bee reports.

Recommendation: "We're moving forward to get a deal done with Sacramento," Goodwin said. "We're looking at hopefully getting something done tomorrow (Friday) or Saturday."

With SAR and Brad starting, we need some bad dudes off the bench. K. Thomas and Songalia do not fit the bill as they scare no one. Seeing the way Petrie has brought in other defensive minded players this offseason, I wouldn't be surprised to see him rebuild the front line bench that way. The way it is now + SAR makes very little sense and is inconsistent with everything else being said by management, which makes me think the moves are not over even though the starting lineup will be established.

Is it possible to do sign and trades when assuming our MLE is gone with SAR? I know it's ok with Songalia...but not sure otherwise.

If so one of these would be great:
Mo Evans for Eddie Griffen
Songalia for R Evans (Seattle pairing Songalia with Fortson might be a good combo for them)

and then K Thomas to East for some combination of expiring contracts/mediocre backup center/2nd round draft picks/trade exception.

If something like that happens, we could get some good toughness off the front and back court bench and really have some great flexibility with matchups

Kings, Abdur-Rahim moving closer to a deal

Barring a disaster like the one that made Shareef Abdur-Rahim available to begin with, the All-Star forward is about to become a King.

While his agent, Aaron Goodwin, said there are three teams still in the running, it's clear the Kings remain in front and a deal could be made soon. OAS_AD('Button20');

http://ads.sacbee.com/RealMedia/ads/adstream_lx.ads/www.sacbee.com/content/sports/583414083/Button20/Sacbee/accessbee_300_ros_nov_4/accessbee_300x250_1295.html/34323363623439363432326636383730?_RM_EMPTY_ "We're moving forward to get a deal done with Sacramento," Goodwin said. "We're looking at hopefully getting something done tomorrow (Friday) or Saturday."

Goodwin, however, would not call his client King Abdur-Rahim just yet, not surprising since the player was headed to New Jersey until a sign-and-trade with Portland collapsed on Tuesday.

"I've been at this 19 years, and a done deal is not a done deal until it's signed," he said.

Adding the nine-year veteran to their roster would instantly up the Kings' position in the Western Conference, with the starting five likely consisting of Mike Bibby, Bonzi Wells, Peja Stojakovic, Abdur-Rahim, and Brad Miller. It would also give them a marquee name at the power forward position, which has been manned by Kenny Thomas and Darius Songaila since the Kings traded Chris Webber to Philadelphia in February.

Abdur-Rahim has averaged 19.8 points and 8.1 rebounds in his career, higher numbers than any current Kings player. But part of his production was the byproduct of playing on woeful teams, a trend Abdur-Rahim is looking to end. Abdur-Rahim has said since becoming a free agent that joining a winner was his top priority. He has never played in the playoffs, not in his five seasons in Vancouver or his time in Atlanta or Portland. The Kings, meanwhile, are seeking their eighth straight playoff berth. Asked if Abdur-Rahim was more attracted to Sacramento for financial or basketball reasons, Goodwin answered quickly.

"It's absolutely for basketball reasons," Goodwin said. "He now walks into a position where he continues to play, and there are no questions about his ability to play. He can play with Mike Bibby, and he gives them a low-post presence."

Abdur-Rahim and Bibby played together for four years in Vancouver. The terms of the potential contract have yet to be settled. The Kings, who are over the salary cap, could use their $5 million mid-level exception for the signing. They could also convince Portland General Manager John Nash to do a sign-and-trade, though Nash has been against the idea in the past. Abdur-Rahim's deal with New Jersey was nixed when he failed a team physical that revealed scar tissue in his right knee. But Abdur-Rahim and Goodwin have insisted that it is the aftereffects of the arthroscopic surgery he had in high school, and that the scar tissue has never hindered his NBA career. Abdur-Rahim has averaged 74 games in his nine seasons. He did, however, miss 22 games in Portland last season after undergoing surgery in mid-January to address loose particles in his right elbow.

"Moving closer to a deal"

Unless something is official it won't be on NBA.com in the signing blog or transaction page.

Great to see some more R. Evans/E. Thomas/Griffin love. :)

I'd love one or two of them on this team...

Evans/Martin/Songaila/Corliss/Thomas/Skinner (though I'd least like to see him go out of the philly three) are all possible who could get a single or pair of them too.

Minnesota has too many big men (especially with talking about interest in Reggie now, is insane).

The moves are definitely not over, not by any kind of shot. With SAR just about a King... still back-up SF/C to be addressed, and plus the likely guys to be gone above (least likely are Skinner/Martin), and the guys who'd come in/be signed to fill those.

As far as Reggie Evans, and the possibility of the Kings landing him....I paraphrase Rick Idleman last year, during the 1st round debacle against the Sonics, our normally bland and dull coach had the following to say:

In regards to Evans tendency to flop unconvincingly in attempt to draw charges....Adleman offered this assessment...."The guys is incredible....He goes down when the air conditioner turns on."

After such a ringing endorsement of the guy, somehow I don't imagine we will be adding him anytime soon.

If we are going to add a flop artist to the team, let's bring in Vlade Divac as assistant coach instead. :)

Uh, you're taking the talk after/between games from a playoff series as a reason why we won't get him? That's all in the heat of competition. All of it. Including Brad and Mobley's comments.

Petrie and co. wouldn't let something as little as any of that effect the improvement of the team.

I actually take what Rick said as a complement to Evans, and I bet Reggie did back then if he read/heard it.

No, I didn't forget anything.

#1 spot isn't even mentioned, so obviously I think it'd be the Spurs. As I've said in my top ten post, and would be my prediction through-out next season anyways.
Yeah, but 2 teams from the same division can never both be in the top 3 no matter how good there record was.... Spurs could have the best record in the league and houston could be second in the league, but houston would be 4th in the west because division winners are placed 1 2 3 in the brackets.

Ooh, woopsie. ;)

Definitely forgot about that then. Denver at #2 and Phoenix #3, then some combo of Houston/Sac/Dallas at 4-6. :)

I'd love to see the Spurs crush the warriors in 4/5 games, or a fun series between Nuggets/Warriors.

SAR is a logical and worth while addition. BUT as many other posters have noted it does very little to adress the teams defensive woes. Brick want "Bad Dudes" as back ups at PF and C... and while that sounds good, I am wondering who these "Bad Dudes" might be? Maybe we should look to Utha for soem back ups but I doubt they have any back up material on the blocks. Songlia might and I say MIGHT be able to ratchet up his attitude more but in the end all you realy have is another slow defender, with sweet jumper who is more foul prone. This is where old vets like T Mass and Tag could come in handy if we had them and more importantly if RA would play them. As is the Kings are likley to try to get by with Skiner at Center (mistake) and Darius at PF (questionalbe) Now if a big ungentle giant can be found to pick up 5 fouls at the 5 so Brian coud switch to the 4 we maig work, with Darius still taking some min when offense is needed but with the Skiner Darius line up in the Kins will be slow clumsy and gaurd dependant... But hey at least it is NOT Hobbit Ball.

Etan Thomas/Eddie Griffin/Reggie Evans/Francisco Elson/Melvin Ely are who I'd love to come in to fill PF, C, PF/C roles.

Thomas/Griffin/Evans are the especially "bad dudes". ;)

I'd take any of those three as starters too, if we weren't bascially getting SAR.

I don't think Utah is the answer to the tough/"bad dude" PF/C's, unless we get Kris Humphries in a deal w/ someone else. Matt Harpring though, would be one to go get for SF/SG. Boozer yeah, but it sounds like they're keeping him now, plus his contract, and he's not a back-up.

I think we could keep Skinner, and is the least likely to go outta the philly 3.

Mutombo!!!!!!!
But sadly he wants to just stay in Houstan.

And like you mentioned, Skinner will fit in nicely with one of those bad dudes as well.

I would just love to see Kobe/McGrady/Allen get stuffed or fouled hard enough to actually fall down when driving inside on us. Our big man bench is the only hope now for any sort of contention.

I wouldn't be so (mile) high on Denver just yet. They have scary talent on their roster....but I want to see how they do now that the honeymoon period with George Karl is over. And also what have they done to address their weakness for outside shooters? Nothing. They hoped to land Michal Finley but he is going to the Heat.

1. Spurs
2. Kings/suns(really a toss up IMO)
3. Nuggets
4. Kings/suns
5. Rockets
6. Mavs
7. Grizzlies
8. Warriors(sorry lakers, t wolves, and sonics)

Voshon Lenard is healthy, and will be better when he comes back. He was good for them before he got hurt. Off-season is very far from over yet, still early days. I'm sticking with what I said.
