Why Kings do this: This trade removes two old low post players and opens up playing time for Spencer Hawes, Justin Williams, and Mikki Moore. Shareef's deal become's expirings, and Kenny Thomas becomes a year shorter with Juwan Howard (who will definately be a better leader and character guy than Kenny). Shawn Livingston was a premier prospect at PG until he shattered his knee and most every ligament in it last year with the freak injury. If he can rehab and regain a semblance of his former self, he would be a terrific backup PG or even a starting PG for years to come. If he really is done with his career after the injury, then the Kings could let him just expire. Quentin Ross is also a nice pickup with this trade as it would improve out perimeter defense dramatically. This also gives the team an offense for defense substitution strategy at the end of games (something Mussellman didn't comprehend very well).

Why Kings don't do this: I've never heard of a team trading for a player who just suffered a career threatening injury and has yet to play a game since the incident. Trading for Livingston would be a gamble, but, as said above, would be both worth the risk if he rehabs well, and hardly a risk as Livingston is an expiring contract. Moving Kenny for anyone would be great in the King's perspective, even for Juwan Howard. (As an aside, isn't Juwan Howard Geoffe Petrie's perfect big man? Slow jump shooter with limited athleticism and poor interior defense. Perfect:()

Why Timberwolves do this: Earlier this year, Minnesota traded Mike James for Juwan Howard to add front court help for Kevin Garnett. Juwan was really happy to be able to play with such a dominante player, and was pretty peaved to come to the team just as they traded KG away for a bunch of win later youth. Juwan has been asking for a trade, and it has even leaked to the media. The T-Wolves don't need his low post scoring now anyway with Al Jefferson coming in. Also, Mark Madsen, the rockstar hustle player for the wolves went down with an injury just as his role was going to dramatically improve. Kenny, though antisocial, and unable to make a layup, could fill Mad Dog's roll beautifully, while allowing Jefferson and the young front court to play (Kenny at the 4 off the bench, Jefferson at the five).

Why Timberwolves don't do this: Kenny's contract sucks B***s. Kenny's offensive game is practically non existent, and his pesimistic attitude could turn corrosive on a young team with no shot, let alone lasting through a dreary Minneapolis winter. Howard is a decent pro, with a winning attitude.

Why Clippers do this: The season ending injury to Elton Brand washed away any chances of the Clippers advancing to the playoffs, let alone contending this year. Brand's absence leaves a festering void at the PF position that could be filled serviceably by Shareef. If the injury to Livingston is as bad as it looked, then it is doing the Clippers no good to keep the player on the bench. This move would go a long way to preventing the clippers from breaking the all time losing streak record.

Why the Clippers don't do this: Maybe they want to break the all time losing streak record and secure the 5th pick in the draft like Boston did this year. With a gapping hole at PF filled by either a rookie SF or Aaron Williams, the Clippers are destined for losing greatness. Why mess with a bad thing? Maybe they also don't want to give up an injured player that they thought could lead their franchise too...

Kings new Lineup (If Livingston can't play)

PG: Mike Bibby/John Salmons/Mustafa Shakur/Quincy Douby
SG:Kevin Martin/Quentin Ross/Quincy Douby
SF: Ron Artest/Francisco Garcia/John Salmons
PF: Mikki Moore/Justin Williams/Juwan Howard
C: Brad Miller/Spencer Hawes/Mikki Moore/Justin Williams

I don't think minn would want thomas and his contract and it would be hard to take howards contract also. But if you could replace thomas it would be great from a minn standpoint.

It'll be interesting to see what the Clippers do with Quinton. He got the start over Maggette the first half of last year because of his defense. Without Brand this year, they'll need Maggette's scoring. Dunleavy seems to like Quinton's defense, so he could start over Mobely, but Mobley's shooting will space the floor more.

Kenny to Minnesota would hurt the Wolves rebuild. There's no reason for them to do that trade.

The 2 reasons that Minnesota would do this trade are to placate Juwan Howard's trade request, and to add a hustle/clean up low post player to fill Mark Madsen's shoes. If Minnesota doesn't care about making their players happy, and Kevin McKale has suddenly lost favor with his favorite type of player, then yes, Minnesota shouldn't do this deal, but historically, McKale makes this type of move.

Even though Livingston blew out his knee completely, I really don't see them trading him with his value so low or non-existant. If he can come back, he's extremely talented when healthy.

Apparently the Wolves, in the new era of getting it, have been talking with numerous other teams about moving some of their other long term deals. If true, not only does it mean that Geoff is subjected to the ultimate humiliation of being out-ebuilded by Kevin McHale, but it also means no way we could foist a longer contract on them than the one Juwann already has. Too bad. Guess there's still Antoine Walker and Malik Rose to "hope" for.

Hence the interest from the Kings perspective. Young building block for the back court (future starting PG), or at least an expiring contract nearing the midlevel exception.

I think most teams would be interested in the guy, but I don't think that the Clipps would move him when his value is at its lowest.

Why I don't do this as the Clips: Livingston may recover, and, on a rookie contract, he's not going to be a big drain on the payroll regardless; keeping him is a risk worth taking.

Why I don't do this as the T'wolves: There are other trade options besides KT, and almost all of them are better.

Wolves trying to trade Howard

After receiving what was described as a dignified trade request from Juwan Howard, Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor said he will try to accommodate the power forward, who was acquired in June as part of a three-team deal. Howard initially made the request to Wolves vice president Kevin McHale.
The Wolves are talking to three teams about potential trades in an attempt to deal players with longer-term contracts. But because of contract complexities, a deal could take until training camp in October.

The Wolves are seeking draft picks and/or younger players.

Howard, who agreed to a $7 million, two-year contract this summer hoping to play with Kevin Garnett, respectfully asked the Wolves to facilitate a trade after Garnett was dealt last month to Boston. Howard, who is near the end of his career, would like to play for a title contender.
With Mark Madsen sidelined after shoulder surgery, look for the Wolves to sign second-round draft pick Chris Richard to a guaranteed contract soon rather than wait and see how he performs in training camp. Richard's chances of making the team improved significantly after Madsen's injury on a Jet Ski.

Taylor was saddened by the death of former Timberwolf Eddie Griffin, who was killed when his car collided with a train in Houston last week. Taylor had met with Griffith, 25, at Taylor's home in Mankato in an attempt to encourage him to make a comeback from alcohol

and personal problems.

"This is so sad because that young man had so many gifts given to him but was haunted by the sickness of alcohol," Taylor said Wednesday. "When I heard about (Griffin's death), I thought, 'Oh, gosh, he's got a little daughter.' She was one of the most meaningful parts of his life, and I encouraged him to live for her and work toward that."
