Sacbee: City of Sacramento unveils new drawings showing how arena would be......

#3
The pictures were buried in another thread. I think it looks great!
It's nice to have a visual of something... and I'm sure it's going to hugely evolve.... but I want more glass and brick and indoor/outdoor incorporation

It will be fun watching the designs evolve and change over the next year. No doubt this is just something to get the thing passed and the process moving. There is a chance to to do some very unique things design wise. It's special when a designer has so many neat elements to work with: the different histories of gold, trains, and river, the river itself, the unique spirit of the fans, the miraculous "Sacramento Ending" (nice one CD) to this project, the warm weather in Sac making outdoor features possible... it's really a designer's dream come true. They could even extend some of the design themes to any new lightrail cars that will be servicing routes to the arena.

Only thing that I feel is a damper on things is how to incorporate I-5 into things. That monstrosity cuts off downtown sac from the river. Too bad the city never moved on burying I-5 and covering it.

Yeah I agree. And I-5 is raised pretty high so when driving by you don't get as good a view of everything. I wonder how much the Arena will stick out when going by on 5, which is where most people drive on when passing through Sac.

It would be nice if the city could get Inland to donate the 2 acres needed. As the article said, Inland will benefit from the boost in value to the rest of the rail yards they own.

Yes, I hate I-5, which cuts the city off from the river and Old Sacramento. I still hope the city covers at least some of it in the future.

I am sorry to see that there will be just about zero outdoor space around the arena. It would have been nice to have some outdoor gathering area. Oh well, can't have everything. I'll just be happy to see an arena downtown. :)

Inland was in meetings with the City last week. Nobody has said what they talked about.

I agree on the space outside the arena. Need some for gathering.

Looking at the Depot... it still needs to be transportation oriented or they will have to pay back a lot of money they received for their renovation that came from transportation funding. It may be a grand entrance. But they better sell train or light rail tickets and accept baggage check in.

I think the plaza would be a whole lot more usable if they didn't have light rail tracks running through the middle. But with the new SITF to the west of the arena, it has to pass through it somewhere. Maybe they can build a deck over the plaza and keep the light rail and transportation and bus stuff covered.

Underground would be nice !

Yeah, or do something cool under the cantilevered section of the arena bowl... with a glass bottomed/sided section of a concourse (or restaurant or bar) over looking the light rail, F Street, and the Amtrak station... now that would be cool.

I agree it would be nice to open up the some space in front of/around the arena for gathering... but it's also nice to have the light rail disembark in the center of action... creates a buzz before and after... but we could just put an entrance behind the arena on F street where the lightrail would disembark... would make any restaurants situated near that entrance more successful too.

Good idea as well. Probably quite a bit less expensive too. I think they can create the tunnel entrance side on H street between 5th and 6th. Then have the arena station stop under the plaza at #4 on the above map and the SITF station stop under the new transit center at #1. The exit of the tunnel coming out at the new extension of F street as shown at #6.

The more I see and read, the more exciting this becomes. Wish there was a way of burying I-5 from the southern most part of Old Sac to the northern part of the railyards but that's a bit much I suppose. Maybe there is some excuse to create more freeway to help traffic flow through the area. In any case, I am sure that as construction begins, new ideas will continue to flow.

That's the point of the arena, CAVE people!!!! I think even the skeptics will show off the area when relatives visit. I know I will. I probably also will use light rail for the first time in my life as there is a real good reason to use it. Sacramento has entered the 21st century and seems to like it. I have always thought this area to be morbidly unimaginative but it seems like the shackles have come off and those with imagination are going to do us all proud.

Is there going to be more construction in that plot of land to the north of Old Sac on the river side of I-5? Another hotel, for example. As others have pointed out, we need hotels to attract huge events and this seems to be a nice place for another hotel.

Pretty sure that plot is owned by Inland. I don't recall what the plan was for development.

Looks like a prime spot for restaurants with boat access.

Not sure which plot you're referencing exactly but it may already be part of the Powerhouse Science Center project

Where it says sacramento river on the picture.
Haha. Oh yeah, that's another cool thing I forgot about... you'll be able to take your BOAT to a game! How fun! Go boating around on the river during the day, dock up at a marina near the arena (renamed Arena Marina, course), and walk to a restaurant and then to a game! Cool!

Although that map doesn't show it, I think that area is where the train tracks are being rerouted to. Whatever is built there will need to put up with the sound of trains. Doesn't sound ideal for a hotel anymore. Anyway, the value of the land has gone up with the addition of new neighbors.

You could access Arena Marina from any place in the world by going up the inland waterway, right?

Apparently part of the overall plan of that section of the railyards is to have a new motel right near the new arena.

I don't know if you've noticed the spooky empty building that's been on the river just north of Old Sacramento? It was a PG&E powerhouse. I've always thought it was kind of a cool looking building. That's going to be remodeled and added onto to create a much larger space for the Discovery Museum that is near Watt Ave & Auburn right now. I think that is a fabulous place for it. That excites me, too, for the downtown area in general.

I find it a bit ironic that a new arena with funding largely based on parking revenue is set in-between light rail and train tracks.
