Why we do it: Sooner or later Spencer is going to be a full-time starter, and moving out Brad Miller while he has some value, whether it be a perimeter based Center that can initiate some offense or at a minimum a nice expiring contract for the 2010 sweepstakes, just makes sense. Collins is a $6M expiring that could come in here and fill in the backup Center minutes behind Hawes. Shelden can battle him for minutes. Additionally, we clear out Mikki Moore and bring in two more PF benchers. This forces Reggie to play Thompson more. The PF benchers have contracts that expire the same time as Miller's, so we don't lose any ground on freeing up cash for 2010.

Why does Minnesota do it: One would think that aquiring veterans while in rebuild mode would be counterproductive for them. But I think this move is what they need. Moore's voice in the lockeroom and Brad's play on the court could help to stablize this team that is in flux right now. Moore and Miller won't be blocking anyone and it is likely they would just bury Moore at the end of the bench with a big green towel. McHale gets to shake his team up without losing anyone important and without losing ground for 2010. With 4 first round picks they can easily spare one.

With Moore's contract option for a 2M buyout next season, he is already considered an expiring contract. So this trade is basically 1 to 1 on expiring and 2 to 1 for 2010 contracts (which involves a former 2 time All-Star for 2 bench warmers).

I'd say NO! As this plainly MIN dumping garbage on us for some more useful pieces.

2009 is a bad time to have a first round pick, especially one below the 20s. This is taking on way too much garbage for a low 1st round pick. It's very likely that come draft time we can simply buy one of their picks, provided we want to do that.

It remains to be seen where the 2nd and 3rd picks will be. IIRC Martin and Garcia were both picked in the 20's. I trust that GP would not put that pick to waste.

An even better possibility is packaging Minny's pick with Houston's pick and moving up in the first round.
