Unsupported speculation. No player has demanded a trade. We haven't gone head to head and lost on any major free agent in the past few years. The players we have traded (Webb/Peja) were steadfast in their desire to stay. Rick wanted to stay. We lost SVG because he is FROM Florida, wanted to stay in Florida, and has family there.
Speculation. who was the #2 that we lost? Did we ever say that SVG was our #1? Have we finished interviewing? SVG told us no- that is sad, I think he would have been a good fit. Not sure who #2 was. Just because guys the #1 or 2 in your book are out doesn't mean diddly-squat.
Thanks for that insight. Not sure why he is a "joke." Pretty well-respected assistant in the NBA, and a very nice and well-respected playing career. Any reason to think that he could not be a former player-coach in the mold of Avery Johnson. He has the exact same personality. Geoff seems to think he is not a "joke." But I guess you just have a lot more insight into all things NBA than Geoff.
True and true- although let's not pretend that we left Steve Nash, Jason Kidd, and Tony Parker on the board to get Douby. The only guy that shows skills to be a real PG that we passed was Williams, and he is far from a "proven PG."
Now we have something. Real information from your position inside the Kings front office. Thanks for sharing about your personal knowledge of our repeated attempts to trade Ron and Brad. From what we have heard there are a few team out there (Miami, New York) that are seriously interested in Ron. We have never even been told that Brad is on the market. It is always easy to say someone is untradeable when they are on the team. Show me a concrete offer/rejection on these players and I will beleive you. Otherwise you know nothing more than me about our efforts to trade these guys and their market value.
The clips win sucks, and the draft pick could be a big difference. Our chances of getting #1 were slim anyway. I don't buy this argument that without the Clips win we are picking #1. But putting all the hope on a ping pong ball was foolish to begin with. We actually need to rebuild.
Count me as glad that we won't be shipping off one of our most vlauable pieces for Varejo and Hughes. Maybe if we were closer and Varejo was the missing piece I would do it, but I fail to see how that trade makes us any better in the long run.
He ruined our one shot at an ESTABLISHED and PROVEN coach. Guys like Porter, Brooks, Rambis have to start somewhere. D'Antoni, Avery Johson, Popovich were all unproven coaches at one point who were given the job over some retread coach who had bounced around the league. I dunno how you can say the guys left on our board are not "good coaches." No one can know that.
I am sure even SVG will be surprised to learn that you beleived hiring him over Rambis or Porter was going to make us a legit contender in two less years. We lost out on a good coach, but there are others. The world did not end last night...

Regardless, this shouldn't be shocking to anyone. I was disappointed, but still think we'll get a great guy in here. Rambis seemed to really click with Petrie from accounts of their interviews, and that could really be something......

Human nature, being what it is, I doubt very much that the Kings make an announcement tomorrow that Kurt Rambis is the Kings new head coach. It's going to take them a while to recover from the unrequited love. The Maloofs are an emotional bunch. If anything, the natural impulse by those in the Kings organization is going to be: "Heck, we won't settle for second best (with Rambis), we'll get somebody even better than Van Gundy - maybe Carlesimo. To announce that you just hired the assisant of the NBA champion Spurs to be your head coach is not second best. Petrie's desire to hire a coach before the NBA draft is trivial in comparison to hiring the right guy. I think they'll wait a while....

Ron still has trade value, thanks to a reasonable contract (once again Larry Bird shows his genius), and natural ability.
The Maloofs understand their role now, at least from the van Gundy hire, and that can only be good for us.
Gibson is a great draft pick, and story, for the Cavs. But so was Voshon Lenard a few years ago for the Heat. No one can predict anything in this sport, and how do people know he won't go right back to averaging 4.5 a game when he's up against better perimeter defenses. I'm not convinced. It takes years to mold a premier PG. And no matter what anyone says, that's still what Bibby is.
People thought the 76ers would never get rid of Theo Ratliff because of that contract....look how that turned out. Sooner or later, Miller will become a big contract teams won't mind sitting on just to clear off the books, and thus an attractive commodity.
Douby is a project, but we never needed him to be Gary Payton. I seriously doubt Petrie called around the league to dump Bibby after drafting Douby.
The arena thing will get settled no later than this year, and it seems that serious and committed people are in control of things.
Petrie is being given free reign this offseason, and I think that is a sign for much hope and optimism. There is good, not great, money coming off the books, and a renewed understanding of the situation this team is in. Look at what may be coming, not at what we don't have.

it's different because van gundy was the guy who was available, and the others are not.
he was the most qualified candidate of all the coaches, plus he had the plus of being successful in a rebuilding situation. if you're for an assistant like rambis, that (to me) is like saying we should just take a gamble and draft on potential this year, rather than need.

I'd agree with you, and thought of that too, but now I think they'll DEFINITELY go for a former player since Van Gundy and Thibodeau were the only ones on that list without any playing experience.
I'd have no problem with PJ, since I think he's learned an infinite amount under Pop and has calmed considerably. I'm always wary of saying people "deserve" anything, but I think he's been genuinely screwed over by playing for the best team each year and having to wait through the playoffs....

hell yeah. lol. I had no fun watching this team this year [except when the young guys played]. we need some excitement back on the court and I don't think svg can do that for us.
People are crying over stan van gundy, come on. we could do better. the guy chose the magic because he has family over there. and I'm glad he didn't sign with us. I want better than him.

I don't know. Maybe he was the best name out there this year. But that doesn't say much. We chose Musselman last year (we saw that wonderful list of candidates) and you want to chose svg this year (and that's fine). Like I said in my previous post, I want fun ball to watch, I don't think svg likes to play that type of style, so I'm not really upset over not getting him..and again, he has family in florida and it's probably safe to say that the kings weren't his first choice.
We still have Porter and Scotty Brooks.

Anyway, I'm done complaining about it, I've done enough of that already, what's done is done and it's time to move on.
Coaches don't win championships, systems do and players do. A good coach can take a below average team and cause them to overachieve and a poor coach and take a good team and cause them to underachieve but probably 95% of coaches in this league are middle of the road anyway. The most important thing this offseason for Petrie is to find a good system (hopefully an entertaining one), get some players that fit, and get a coach who can get those players to buy into it.

At this point, I think it's the guy we haven't even interviewed. Rick Carlisle. I think there is a sentiment that we just got rid of one non-player, control freak with a napolean complex that loses his teams, so why would we want another with similar tendencies? It's an overreaction.
Rick Carlisle wins where Muss does not.
6 seasons, 3 Division Titles, 5 playoff appearances, 281-211 record (.571 winning %)
If his history repeats iteself here, we'll have a winning team that is getting a little tired of his act in 3 years. His style is slower, but again, the difference is that he wins.
Comparing SVG to Carlisle is tough. Comparing Carlisle to Kurt freaking Rambis and Scott Brooks? It's just not even close. His stock is low right now, but it is the best basketball move IMO.

I'll pass on Carlisle. I've heard too many players stop playing for him. Besides, I heard he's up for the Seattle job.

They stopped playing for him to the tune of 5 out of 6 seasons in the playoffs, two 50 win seasons, a 61 win season, and a coach of the year award?
Yes, his players have expressed frustration with him, but the proof is in the result.

Pretty much every successful head coach was an assistant coach who wanted to move up at one point.

That is true, however, I was really pulling for SVG. Now that he's in Orlando, I just wasn't sold on any of the candidates that Petrie interviewed. My next option would be Terry Porter, however, from what I heard/read, he wasn't given the opportunity to be interviewed.

Who cares if SVG was an "assistant" coach in the PAST.....I am talking about the present. And the present is SVG was the best option and now that he's got a job, I feel the next best coach would be Terry Porter. Just MY opinion.Ummmm........but one point in time that's what Van Gundy was.

asked this yesterday, and only two coaches who went from assistant of one franchise to head coach of another did well at that first stop: byron scott (NJ) and rick carlisle (DET). i guess you can also include mike brown, but he doesn't fill me with confidence (mainly because he can't coach).
anyway, the point is, that first stop for an assistant becoming a head coach isn't exactly filled with positive precedents.

Van Gundy is giving a news conference at 2pm our time live on ESPN from Orlando. I'll try to catch it and report (or others can) if he says anything interesting about his little trip to SacTown.
