S Van Gundy New coach of Magic

Ouch.

I thought we had him.

But I figured it seemed pretty 'off' thinking of taking our position when we are so far away from home, and have a far less talented roster.

I'm not gonna sweat it...Coaches aren't going to be the big difference this year, it's gonna be the players after what GP hopefully does to us this offseason.

Coaches always add or subtract. The one we eventually get will not necessarily subtract. But the odds just got a little longer that he will add.

So why did Stan and his wife come to Sactown again today?.......i'm sorry, I is very confuse - ed right now.

SVG can go to hell, I have no respect for him at all anymore. After the Magic messed around with him and practically treated him like a piece of crap he chooses them anyway? Man what the hell? He must have 0 self respect, oh well screw him at least Rambis has actually played in the NBA before.

They must have driven past Del Paso Heights. That and the wind today would make anyone realize....holy jesus.....Orland is MUCH better, and closer to what they were used to in Miami.

So, Stan and the wife are flying red-eye back to Miami tonight or are they headed to Orlando? The Maloof's gambled and lost again, this time throwing tens thousand of dollars at a meaningless private jet cross county flight:(

All they did today was come here he and his wife to look at houses and tour the area and talk with Petrie and the Maloofs somemore. I can't blame the guy for taking the Magic job, good young roster, his parents live in Florida and most of his family does and the East is alot easier to win in than the West. Plus he has three school aged kids and you have to think the family part comes into play too cause he is a family man.

Such is the life of a Kings fan. Should have known.

I just hope Porter's on the list now. I'm not really much inspired by Rambis.

Perhaps they did not find it quite the Garden of Eden after all, eh? :p

I suspect it was due dilligence. SVG apparently wanted to make the call by wednesday, and I think this likely means that we were his second choice -- that if the Magic got their act together in time, he would coach them. Alternately I guess it really could mean that he, or his wife, just did not feel comfortable with the city or change after they got to Sacto.

Either way...it did not take a genius to pick SVG out of the crowd this offseason as a priority hire. Do not know why we did not move on him faster. The Pacers made an offer to him weeks ago. If that had been us, we might have gotten him.

Ya they took a trip through Del Paso Heights, than off to south Sac and the fruitridge area than a drive through North Highlands and said I have seen enough. Good bye lol.

I hope he chokes on it. Flying to Sac was a BS stunt.

I'm not believing anything until I see an official report and there's a contract signed. However, even if SVG goes to Orlando, I am not going to be bitter about him visitng Sac today. I idon't think it was a publicity stunt, I think that either:

1 - He had doubts that the Donovan deal/Riley demands would come to a speedy resolution and did not want to burn his bridges here.

2 - Petrie and the Maloofs convinced SVG to come with his wife to allow them to make their pitch, since family was one reason to stay in Florida and SVG did out of respect. He has spoken highly of Sac even turning down the Indiana job for us, so I can imagine him giving us a full opportunity to change his mind.

I do have to wonder if one of the reasons Porter was held out of the interviews up until this point was to avoid the blatant second choice appearance if Van Gundy didn't come here. Now if he comes in for an interview, yeah, we wanted Van Gundy but hey, we never had a chance to interview Porter. Now he looks like a guy riding in to the rescue.

yeah, and they probably got lost in Oak Park, and made a wrong turn and landed up in the bad side of Rancho....MAN Sac has some beautiful places!:D Oh, and I bet they took the walking tour of the 700 block of K Street, too...PRESTINE!!

Here's the ESPN article, FWIW:

Stan Van Gundy met with Kings but chose Magic

ESPN.com news services

Looks like Stan Van Gundy couldn't be swayed by the Kings.

Although the former Miami coach was in Sacramento to talk with the Kings about their vacancy, Van Gundy accepted the Orlando Magic coaching job, ESPN's Jim Gray learned late Wednesday night.

Van Gundy was reportedly offered the Magic coaching job on Tuesday, but that didn't stop him from flying out to Sacramento on Wednesday to continue that courtship.

The former Miami Heat coach spent Wednesday in Sacramento, touring the area and meeting with Kings officials for further discussions about becoming their head coach, the club confirmed.

NBA coaching sources told ESPN.com that Van Gundy, who has interviewed twice with the Kings, and his wife were picked up in a private jet and flown to the city.

Van Gundy, a Northern California native, was expected to meet with Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie, who just returned to Sacramento from a pre-draft camp in Orlando.

Eric Musselman was fired by Sacramento at the end of the season after only one campaign in which the Kings didn't make the playoffs for the first time in eight years.

The Orlando Sentinel reported on Tuesday night that the Magic have offered their head coaching job to Van Gundy. Orlando released Billy Donovan from his five-year, $27.5 million deal late Wednesday. The Magic might still have to deal with Van Gundy's own contract complications.

Van Gundy is under contract with the Miami Heat as a consultant for one more season. He was replaced as coach midway through the 2005-06 season by team president Pat Riley, who led the team to their only championship.

Riley may ask for compensation, most likely in the form of draft picks, to let Van Gundy coach in the same division, the Southeast, as Miami. According to sources, Riley would not have asked for compensation if Van Gundy coached in the Western Conference.

The Kings have interviewed several candidates to replace Musselman, but Van Gundy and Lakers assistant coach Kurt Rambis are the only candidates who received invitations for second interviews in Las Vegas last week, where both met with Petrie and owners Joe and Gavin Maloof at the Maloofs' casino.

Van Gundy grew up in Martinez, Calif., a Bay Area town about 60 miles from Sacramento.

Sources have told ESPN.com that the Magic wanted to act quickly to try to hire Van Gundy and mitigate the public relations damage done by Donovan asking out of his five-year contract. That likely indicates Orlando doesn't think that negotiations with Riley and the Heat would be as daunting as those with the former Florida coach.

Reached at his home Tuesday night by The Associated Press, Van Gundy declined comment when asked if either the Magic or Kings had made him any contract offers.

Riley was traveling and unavailable for comment, according to a Heat official.

Andy Katz, who covers college basketball for ESPN.com, and Marc Stein, who covers the NBA for ESPN.com, contributed to this report. Information from The Associated Press was also used.
