Roy Agrees To $80M Extension

Makes Kevin Martin's deal slightly more palatable, but this is kind of high. I like the heck outta Brandon Roy and I hope he continues to play at an All-Star level, but $16 million per is pretty steep for a 3rd year player. Pretty sure it'll all work out, but that's a pretty hot bath if he falls off.

Roy's a great player, but that's pretty pricey considering his output, injury history, and the fact that Portland will need to keep good players around him. Definitely not a steal, but not as bad as last summer's ridiculous Martell Webster extension.

seems like a panic move. that team is in the lottery without Roy, even with all their great depth, they are not dynamic at any spot except for when Roy is in there. If he continues to improve, it won't look like that bad a deal, but yea... that's about 4-5 mil a year too much

Being honest, I wouldn't mind seeing us grab him at $80 million over five years if he were a free agent. But I would think he's a touch overpaid.

Roy's actually one of my favorite players in the league, and I do think of him as a near-franchise player. He plays a paced style of game that acts as a throwback to the more athletic foils that the league is trending towards, and is highly effective in both creating shots for himself and others without turning it over. I think the injury problems are overrated--he hasn't missed more than 20 games since his rookie year, and he's been relatively healthy the past few seasons; he is ball dominant but relies much more on skill than athleticism to get things done, so he'll age well.

Roy is good but he isn't a max deal guy. That is too much money.
Lebron. D-Wade. Kobe. Howard. These are max deal guys.

I think talent wise, ROY is up there. I would rate him right next to maybe Ginobili or a young Ginobili at that. He's very good at going through traffic to the rim, can hit big shots and very well controlled and has the go-to-guy mentality. Except for injuries i think he can be a very special player. I love KMart and all but i wouldn't even compare him to Roy.

I like Roy a lot, but do think that is a bit too much money for him. But Ginobili doesn't even deserve to be mentioned in the same class as Roy IMO. Don't get me wrong, I think Ginobili is a good player. But no GM would even consider trying to build a team around him. He is a good 2nd or 3rd player on a good team.

hmmm..i disagree. remember that Ginobili led the first team ever to defeat a USA Team composed of NBA players. And i do believe there was a time Ginobili is mentioned with the likes of Kobe's as one of the top SG in the league.

But, that was an 05 Ginobil not 09, so with that, we may be in the same page.

Yea kind of unfair to compare the two. Ginobili's first couple of years in the leauge, he was a monster before all the miles and injuries caught up to him. This is the same guy who was taking the last shots in the playoffs and always had the ball in his hands. Not his fault he was a 6th man. Roy is a little stronger and a bit better midrange, but GInobili is a better overall shooter, tougher (one of toughest ones in the leauge, all the flopping nonwithstanding) and up until this point, has a killer instinct that Roy can't match. Maybe this contract will make sense in about 2 years, but not now.
