Roster Construction

I know it's not the modern NBA, but I really hope we migrate our style away from 3 point chucking, and to more of an inside out, attack style offense. With the current lack of shooters on the squad, would be nice if we play at a top 10 pace, but bottom 10 three point shot attempt.

Our shooters might start hitting 3’s at a much higher clip because of spacing and the inside out attack.

My only hope for holmes currently is that they actually put him in the PnR again. I haven't seen him be put in the rim roles or take a push shot in the last many games. I feel like they have frozen him out of the offense for the last 10 games.
Probably because they were showcasing some players. Fox also missed time as a result IMHO.

The way Davion is playing I’m not sure how much longer he’ll be on the bench.

Regardless of whether he starts, basically either he or Fox is going to have to be on court at any given time. So even if he starts, he's the first off for a sub so he can come back when Fox sits. It's kind of six of one, half a dozen of the other.

I think the rest of this year will be Gentry's time to experiment with who the best two other players are to put next to Fox, Barnes, and Sabonis.

I think it's likely he goes with the same starting five of Fox/Holiday/Barnes/Metu/Sabonis for the next game, but I'm sure we'll see DiVincenzo start at SG and Barnes moved from SF to PF as Gentry tries playing Holiday, Harkless, Metu, Lyles, and maybe even Jackson along with HB.

Given the lack of PG depth I think it's unlikely the Kings start Mitchell and Fox unless they get desperate. He'll still get plenty of minutes though, and I'm sure they'll play together a fair amount.

I think DDV is viewed as a long term piece if they can re-sign him. Lyles has a very team friendly option for next year. Holmes needs to be showcased for a potential trade this offseason. Mitchell was a McNair pick and is under team control for several years. In a normal situation without an interim coach, Lamb and Jackson would likely be the guys that get buried on the bench just because they're unlikely to return next season. But with Gentry not only trying to win to show he's the longterm guy for the Kings, but also trying to earn his next job if he's not retained in Sacramento, he'll probably play whoever he thinks will help him win now.

So the starting five and minutes distribution is going to be fascinating to watch IMO.

It's not necessarily who starts but who will finish with the game on the line? Too bad we couldn't restart this turd of season (pre-deadline).

There's just no chance DDV isn't a major part of the core going forward. Monte clearly hasn't cooled in wanting him over the last few years and just found the absolute perfect opportunity to buy-low and swipe him for a fraction of his actual value. Dude is just perfect next to Fox in the back-court and he'll certainly be another guard who can 2-man game with Sabonis and make use of his passing with great off-ball movement

The only trepidation I have is Mitchell really does need to be starting so he's not missing that first 5-6 min rotation at the start of the 1st and 3rd quarter. That's 10-12 minutes we're missing on getting his defense against the other teams best guard. But Fox-DDV should just be as equally good and DDV is a super high level defender in his own right.

I think it will depend on matchups, unless the team catches fire. I would expect to see either Fox/DDV/Barnes/Metu/Sabonis or Fox/DDV/Holiday/Barnes/Sabonis.

I'm also intrigued with the idea of Holiday, Harkless, and Barnes on the floor together

This is my guess on who starts while DDV continues to work back into shape and being able to handle big minutes again. Harkless-Barnes have already developed strong chemistry as the 3/4 and been playing really well together. Gives you a good offensive structure too with a couple quality defender/role player types in Harkless and Holiday.

Leaves the bench fully loaded too. Mitchell-DDV-Lamb-Holmes is a nasty bench that no one should be able to keep up with.

Reading the Pistons board on realgm it sounds like Lyles should be able to get some rotation minutes at the 4.
Lyles will definitely get minutes next to DS because even though his 3 point percentage is crap this year he had 3 seasons where he shot 38%+ from tree.He is capable.

Really wish Holmes was traded. Jones deserved the backup C.
Holmes is too good to play 10-12 min a game, but that's all he will be getting unless injury or foul trouble. While obviously great for the team to have such a great back up, not sure how he feels about it.

Hopefully the step lost that Bucks fans have talked about is just temporary as he's continuing to come back from injury.

The muscles in his ankle detached from the bone. It's reasonable to assume that that'd take quite a while to come back 100% from.

Kings need to make the Holmes PnR a feature of the 2nd unit and dare bench bigs to try and stop it.

I'd like to see it, but I'd also like to see more diversity with the offensive design for that 2nd unit. When Sabonis is out of the lineup you need to have something more creative than setting outside picks and rolling or handing off to a guard coming around the pick. With the new players we have there should be more passing and cutting even without Sabonis in the lineup.

yeah might make sense to let him just rehab this year and not risk further injury. If the Kings have promised him his next contract everyone might be well served to look long term.

Absolutely but there's always a chance that he never gets back to 100% and turns from a high level roleplayer to a low level roleplayer or fringe NBA player. Hopefully he just needs more time because he's a solid player when healthy and helps the defensive immensely.

His game was never really predicated on his-level athleticism though. He's a great cutter/mover without the ball who was a solid shooter up until this season who also plays solid man defense and great offball defense.

Him being a restricted free agent this year allows us to bring him in for these last couple of months, try him in the system, evaluate his physical condition, and then letting him go at no cost/beign able to sign and trade him for an asset. Conversely, if he blows the hell up playing with Domantas, the Kings don't have to worry about him getting away since they can match any contract offer he gets.

It's an incredibly shrewd buy-low move by Monte that would be getting national praise were he not the GM of the Kings.

the risk is there. We got him in a buy low scenario for a reason. Not just every other GM is a moron. But if he does come back he will be an ideal fit and it’s the type of risk the Kings should be taking.

actually he did get national praise for it.

There's risk to DDV's career, but little risk to the Kings. If Bagley weren't traded he'd almost certainly be gone this offseason so Monte gets a free evaluation period with a player he clearly likes but who is a RFA this offseason. If DiVincenzo doesn't make it all the way back to where he was, the Kings can let him walk and they're no worse off than if they'd held onto Bagley.

So I agree it's a great, very low risk move by the Kings to see if he fits with Fox & Sabonis.

There's risk to everyone's career, just look at Chris Bosh.

Right though we don’t know if the Kings agreed to an extension and to sign him in RFA. Otherwise he might be pushing through something he needed to fully rehab because of his next contract. We just don’t know what was said behind the scenes.
