Rose

Bulls are clearly heading in the rebuilding direction...looks like they are building around Jimmy, unless he gets traded too. Rose is made of glass so this was a wise move on Chicago's behalf.

There might be an opportunity for us here. Chicago now needs a starting PG. Their core pieces are Jimmy Butler at SG, Taj Gibson and Nikola Mirotic at PF, Robin Lopez at C, and Mike Dunleavy and Doug McDermott at SF. Would they take an offer of Rudy Gay and Darren Collison for #14 and Bobby Portis? This would be a salary dump for us, but we'd pick up a young stretch 4 and an additional draft pick while clearing about 17 million in salary. Neither player seems to be in our long-term plans anyway, so if we can pick up some assets for them now and add to our cap space pot that's a win-win right? Chicago gets two starters at positions of need -- one of which they already tried to trade for a few months ago -- and we get more money to throw at the free agent SF,PF, SG or PG of our choice.

Considering how well throwing money at free agents works for kings - NO!
Last year we needed it since we had no $$$ flexibility, not so this year.

Btw, what is that obsession with Gay being useless.
Like him or not, he has talent, size, he is not injured nor old, and his contract is solid.
Casspi is a great sub, never has been consistant starter and this year is not a year to open chances for something else to go wrong.

I am getting nervous about guards, which is where we should focus on. Couple of potential solutions are gone yesterday and there were not that many of them anyway. Hoping Divac has something up his sleave.

I never said that Gay is useless -- I said it doesn't look like he's in our long-term plans. If we want better defense and shooting at the SF spot, it's difficult to see how else we could utilize Rudy. Omri was an elite shooter this season and loves playing for Sacramento so it makes sense to keep him around and that means you can't really push Rudy to the bench either. Yes I realize that cap space is a tough sell for Sacramento fans considering how consistently we strike out on free agents -- I've made the same argument myself recently. But we do have an opportunity this season because of the escalating salary cap to pursue some free agents with max money. We can't do that unless we move some of our bigger contracts though. I'm always in favor of being pro-active rather than reactive and we're looking at a situation where we likely lose Rudy for nothing at the end of the season anyway as he has a player option that he's likely to decline. We're almost certainly not bringing Collison back in a year either and Seth Curry looks like a solid bet to replace him as the backup PG. Why not get some value back for Gay and Collison while we still can?

There's another motivation here -- one of the trades I've been supporting is the rumored deadline deal of Koufos and McLemore to Cleveland for Iman Shumpert which gives us a defensive presence in the backcourt and clears out more minutes for Cauley-Stein in the frontcourt. I don't think Koufos or McLemore are useless either, but I do think we need some stability at the SG position and besides being a proven defender, Shumpert went on the Israel trip last summer with Omri, Caron, and DeMarcus so there's already the potential there for some developing chemistry. Having Shumpert start at SG really necessitates some kind of shooting specialist at SF though. I also want Rondo back if we can get him for 15 million or less because we're not going to find a better PG in free agency (the Mike Conley obsession around here notwithstanding -- the Spurs are interested and we realistically have zero chance of beating them with or without Joerger). So adding everything up, I feel like the smartest move would be to try to trade Belinelli, Gay, and Collison before free agency begins, re-sign Seth Curry to be the backup PG, and then target a 3 and D wing player and a big who can compliment both Cousins and Cauley-Stein. Stealing Harrison Barnes from Golden State is the most intriguing option I see at SF because he's an elite shooter (or at least he was before this year's playoffs...) and we'd be weakening a division rival. Al Horford is my preference for the third big, though he's going to require max money (about 26 million) and he'll have a lot of other options.

I like Omri, but he's nowhere near the player Gay is.

KF's are overlooking Gay's skills at their peril.

You missed a key point here: Omri wants to be in Sacramento. Rudy may or may not. And both of them are free agents at the end of the year.
