Rock Band Draft - Round 6 (Wrap Up)

Cool. With that in mind, the frontman cometh:

Kurt Cobain - lead vocals / rhythm guitar (Nirvana)

Yes, he could only play three chords. Yes, he breaks my informal No Two From The Same Band rule (although Grohl's got the Foo Fighters thing going for him, too, to conveniently get around that). But when it comes to frontmen, especially from the 90s, Cobain is The Man, The Myth, The Legend. There were several other possibilities for me here, but when you notice all the other guys being compared to Cobain, you realize you're best served simply going with The Original.

Cool. He is one of the three biggest stars left on the board in my opinion and even though he is not in my "plan" I probably would have taken him next and changed my plan if he had dropped.

And I like his guitar playing anyhow. He was a sarcastic tortured guy and the whole "I can only play three chords" thing is not to be taken too literally. I don't think you can play the whole Nirvana catalog with three chords.

Good one

I wasn't at all sure how this was going to progress but it's been very enjoyable to follow along. It's gonna be tough to vote on these bands.

Nice job, all.

Nope, I'm noodling around with "Unplugged in New York" on my acoustic right now and I can testify you can't ;)

To pick a nit:

Dave Grohl and Pat Smear also played guitar on Unplugged (for some songs), both of whom are better than Cobain on the guitar.

Ray Manzarek - Keyboards/backup vox (ex Doors)

Ray's keys were major part of the Doors sound, but he went on to have an amazing career in film and music on his own, working with Phillip Glass, Iggy Pop, X, Echo And The Bunnyman. No other keyboard player can bring such combination of main stream success/classic rock pedigree and alt/indie rock credentials. OK there are few out there, but they are all huge stars on their own and would tip the balance other way from what I am trying to create here.

Nice pick. Was strongly considering him, but didn't see the keys really fitting in with where I was going.

Let's go, let's go! I'm quite excited to make my next pick who will tie things together like gangbusters. Unless she's taken. (Or is it a he? Very sneaky, am I. :p)

Straying away from my surf rock theme, but this man works perfectly for the direction I'm intending to go.

[yt=Californication]abrKM1Z_te8[/yt]

John Frusciante - 2nd Lead and Rhythm Guitar/ Back-up Vocals (Associated with The Red Hot Chili Peppers)

He very well may be the heart of the Chili Peppers considering his role in their critically acclaimed Blood Suger Sex Magik and his return to the band sparking their come back with Californication.

He is utterly adaptable playing a multitude of styles, while focusing on the melodic and emotional elements of music, which complements my band leader Brian Wilson.

And when need be, he can throw down and thrash with the best of them.

Nice pick! I have always really liked Frusciante. The Chili Peppers, in my opinion, were their best when he was in the group. I am interested in hearing how you will explain how John Frusciante and Dick Dale will play guitar parts together.

So you are re-forming Nirvana?

Is it just me, or does anyone else have the rock band draft fever?

I would like to see another one of these drafts.

and

Maybe, in addition to regular voting, awards given for different outstanding bands... like best rock band, best alternative band, etc.

This game is awesome, I want to run it back with the 80 selected musicians excluded. Round 2. There are an astonishing depth of hall of famers who have not and will not be picked in this game.

Obviously some people have good idea for rule updates too. Maybe in round 6 you can kick one member out of the band and replace him.

Yeah I have rock band draft fever that's why I have been impatient when the picks slowed down.

I know it! I want to make my pick so bad, but the waiting... oh well TDOS I guess.

You call this slowed down? More like stopped -- I think peole are just milking things to make sure that their pick gets the absolute maximum 23hrs 59min of drama before they make it so we can waddle along at one pick a day. ;)

I propose a new rule: anyone taking more than 12 hours to pick is automatically assigned one of the members of New Kids On the Block, N'Sync or The Backstreet Boys.

Phew. I thought for a sec you were going to include LFO.

With Pick #4 I'm adding one of the best musicians of all time. An epic concert pianist, a world renowned composer, and a funky SOB...I'm taking him before he developed deafness due to lead poisoning, and after he was transported to our time by 2 high school garage band stars failing their history class. He'll play sysnthesizer like a man possessed, and can mix any techno rythum to classical/romantic stylings. Rollover Beethoven!

Pick #4: Ludwig Van Beethoven (Synthesizer/1st Piano/Composer/Alternate Conductor)

Skip to 2:20 for the great riff
