Robert Horry - Hall of Fame?

I know we've had this discussion before - I'm pretty sure we had it with Steve Kerr.

But before you jump on me, know that I hate Robert Horry as much, no wait, more, than the next guy.

Still. The guy has won 6 rings and he has played a very key role in just about all of them. At the very least doesn't he deserve a look?

People get inducted for all kinds of things - if I remember correctly, many people on this board think Vlade should be a hall of famer for his contribution to the game. Horry is no superstar but he does one thing and he does it well - he wins rings.

Thoughts?

though i hate him.... he deserves it... he and pippen were probably the 2 greatest role players in the game.... that and the man is clutch almost to a fault... you can feel it in your bones when he is gonna hit a game deciding shot....

Just because you are clutch does not mean you get into the hall of fame.
gotta have the stats for that. sorry.

Nope. Nobody like him as ever made it. He won't be the first. Unless they open up a special roleplayer's wing that is.

Basketball HOF is for major MAJOR players. Dominique Wilkens is still knocking on the door waiting to get in. Unless he finds a way to win a title in Philly, Webb will probably not make it. And these are MVP candidate level guys. Dennis Rodman won 5 rings, 2 Defensive Player of the Year awards, was the greatest rebounder in modern history, and he's a very borderline case who may never make it. Might be a dozen guys in the entire league who will make it eventually. Horry's not one of them, or even on the map.

Basketballreference.com (or whatever they are calling themselves right now) actually have an interesting feature on each player's page (and they have every player who has ever played) called the HOF monitor. Basically its a number representing a guy's chance to make it to the HOF based on historical data. The cutoff for a likely HOFer is 135. Horry scores out at 81 (+ a few more points for winning another title now). About as good as you'll ever see for a roleplayer, but not even in the conversation. (Rodman's at 118 BTW, Nique at 142, Webb at 134).

webb needs a point?

Sure, but its not a science. Either way he's very borderline and the conventional wisdom was that he needed a title to sort of cement his impact and put him over the top.

I like that idea. Pay tribute to the guys who toiled their entire careers and made the guys around them better. Horry is only the second guy to ever win rings with three different teams. I think he deserves some mention because he didn't just sit on the bench and watch the team collect the ring for him. *cough*T-Mass*cough*

I would like to see him get some recognition because he shows that guys who aren't quite as SUPER as the Duncans and Bryants and Shaqs, etc. of the world can also make a big difference in the game.

We'll call it the AHOF. Almost hall of fame.

that ranking system has some flaws...big one to me is that reggie miller is a much stronger candidate than ai, gary payton, or steve nash, 3 guys who are in the "lock" category while miller is not

Being an MVP pretty much gets you into that lock category.

Isn't there a basketball HOF and NBA HOF? With the basketball HOF much easier to get into.

NO.
6 rings is a lot, but u gotta be that guy that your team relies on when they are in trouble. I kno he bails out his team with incredible "game on the line/rings on the line" shots, but he is not the guy that gathers a team together. Like brick said about Nique. Look how incredible he was, and he hasn't got in and probably won't get in. Horry could have an incredible game like game 5, but then could easily have 0's across the board on his stats the next game. You have to be very consistent in your abilty to dominate games in order to make the HOF. He's never played on a team that didn't have HOF players, so maybe we don't know what type of player he could be if he didn't have great players around him opening up shots for him. Look at his teammates of the 3 teams he won rings with. Olojuwan, shaq, and now duncan. That's a pretty impressive list of teammates.

That MVP must have really bounced Nash. I mean REALLY bounced him (the assist title, first team All-NBA would really help as well). Almost wondering if that's not a misprint. He was probably at about 100 or so before this season (just guessing).

As for A.I. and Payton, those are no brainer first ballot types. Both much more surer things than Miller.

As for Reggie -- maybe deserve it...EXCEPT for the amazing playoff/clutch heroics which will put him in. But that is missed by any sort of statistical ranking though (although they also factor in awards etc.). Statistically he's just an 18pt 3reb 3ast off guard with no MVPs, no titles, not first or second team All-NBAs, never led the league in anything etc. Major player and one of the top overall scorers of all time (12th actually), but the sparkle was in the intangibles.

Nope... he was about 80 before this year.

Btw, they added the MVP (75 points) to hgis total but they have not calculated anything else. He'll get 15 more points with making first team all-nba.

The HOF Monitor will be updated sometime later this month.

No way he gets in. Might get a couple votes if hes even nominated but he wont get in. He just hasnt done enough.
