SACRAMENTO, Calif., Nov 17, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- As the once-mighty Sacramento Kings work to regain their dominant rule of the court, Mark Burnett Productions and Maloof Television today announced they are joining forces on a new unscripted drama following the basketball team's restructuring. "Rebuilding the Kingdom" will focus on the franchise as it undergoes a complete reformation.
In the vein of "The Restaurant," this look at a high-stakes, high-pressure work environment will not only profile a team of talented players and coaches on the comeback trail, but will delve into the unique everyday challenges inherent in running an NBA franchise. Viewers will be given unprecedented access as executives rebrand the Kings, strategize on how to keep the 17,000-seat Arco Arena full, and keep the Sacramento community engaged while the team develops.
"We are thrilled to continue our expansion into television with the King of Reality TV," said Maloof Television Chairman/CEO Phil Maloof. "We are honored at the opportunity to be a part of Mark Burnett's family of hits."
"This project will be a unique experience for the television viewer," said Mark Burnett, President of Mark Burnett Productions. "We are committed to creating fun and innovative programming and with the Maloofs allowing this type of access to their organization, this is a great fit."
Mark Burnett will serve as executive producer for Mark Burnett Productions, and Phil Maloof and Andrew Jameson will be among the executive producers for Maloof Television. This is the first joint venture between the two companies.

Naismith help me, I think this has the potential to be reality TV at its very best... After all, they've already shown they've got their fingers on the pulse of what the public demands with that stellar production, "Living Lohan."

Unless I'm mistaken, didn't "The Restaurant" fail after two seasons when the head chef (Rocco DiSpirito) and his financial backer parted ways in a less than amicable manner? Said Rocco, BTW, is now reduced to guest spots on actual successful reality shows like Top Chef.

With this news release, however, we do finally know who to thank for the hamburger commercial... Way to go, Phil.

haha, it looks like im the only one who thinks its a pretty cool idea ..

I hope I can get it here in massachusetts if it ever works out.

The big problem is that it sounds like a cool idea. But what happens when they start to make decisions based on TV ratings? Or play way too much to the cameras in their (TPTB) efforts to look hip and cool and professional?

The chances of a major disconnect between the actual basketball fans and the team are pretty high, IMHO, if they take this too far. And taking things too far doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility.

Remember the gold lamé and the big giant "gold" 6 outside Arco?

Well that's unexpected. It's not April 1st right? It's certainly a big risk. Generally professional sports teams are run like exclusive gentleman's clubs. What goes on behind the scenes is for members only. But something like this does have a chance to generate interest in King's basketball, particularly because no one's ever done it before. If Mark Burnett is involved than I'd assume this is a national show. Maybe this is a way they can expand their resources beyond the limitations of a smaller market. If that's the case, it could really be a smart business move. And hey, they've already got the right coach for the job! Maybe this has been in the planning stages for some time already then?

I'm down with this. There's nothing going on in kings land anyways and living in LA without league pass is a drag. I feel like I don't even know my kings besides reading members of kingsfans.com posts. I really hope it's a nationally televised show.

Oh that media hound Geoff has just got to love this one. :p

Maybe we really should go out and get "Starbury?"

Wow, I think this could go really, really badly. Pity the players, coaches, and GM who probably didn't get to have any input into how they feel about this. Chalk me up as one who things some things should stay behind closed doors.

It might be a dumb idea and a dumb show, but at least MS&E has now officially embraced the word "rebuild." Not refurbish, adjust, or any of those other things... REBUILD. And for that, I am thankful.

Here is the thing: reality TV, well, a) is trash :p; but b) thrives on controversy and squabbling (which is why its trash). No conflict = no "vicarious fun". Now do you, I, or ANYONE associated with the Kings want to a) either expose drama/squabbles within the team, or b) invent/exaggerate squabbles/drama amongst the team for the sake of TV ratings?

Here is the only way I see it working.

Kevin sprains his ankle. They show the play. Cut to some team officals or whatnot watching a replay on TV somewhere. Team officals look glum. Say "that looks like 2-3 weeks" or whatever. Cut to training room. Kevin with trainer. Trainer testing ankle. Camera zooms in on Kevin's face as he winces. New shot, obviously later, trainer comes back in room and tells Kevin the bad news. Camera flashes to Kevin's face looking glum. Camera follows Kevin out to car as he gimps along. Cut to meeting of coaching staff for next game. Talking about how to play wihtout Kevin. Cut to next morning, camera shows Kevin's car arriving. Kevin gets out. Kevin talks to camera as he gimps into training faciltiy to work out. Camera watches him work out. Voiceover about the game that night against the Spurs (or whoever). Show cuts of action. Cuts to glum looking coaches and glum looking Geoff in the hall as things go badly. Cut to Kevin watching game on sideline looking glum. Cut to commercial. After the commercial move to next piece of "drama". Etc. etc.

And if that sounds to you as if everyone not a bored Vegas playboy is going to want to just take that damn camera and smash it within a week, you have it about right.

Hey guys think about this. NBA players want the lime light right??? Well all they get is game coverage an interview or 2 then if they are elite enough some endorsments. Now with the kings they can have all that and a weekly run TV show??? Could this be a play on the upcoming free agent market by the maloofs. Imagine Lebron coming and during the show it cuts to commercial and guess who is in the commercial. Imagine how often they would call him the Kings of Kings.

What channel are we talking about anyway?

No one has even gotten any information on this thing yet other then this little article. For all we know, this is just another one of those little Nba access things that they do on NBATV.

I HIGHLY doubt they will show too much that goes on behind the scenes. Lets not jump to conclusions.

I was able to get a bit more information... It's supposed to focus on people other than the players. And it's just a concept right now. If you have HBO, think Hard Knocks with the Cowboys but with less focus on the players...

This show could have been a lot better if it was back in 98. Not just because of the team, but because Scott Pollard could have provided some interesting moments.

lol theus is going to make it look like hangtime

if i could only watch what goes on during training and halftime somebody get it in youtube :D

Probable dialogue from an episode:

ARN TELLEM: I'm sorry, Geoff, my underperforming roleplayer client - who is just oozing with potential - will only take a five year MLE.

GEOFF: 5 Years! Well, wait a minute...does he have a good jumpshot? Oh, and we need defense, can he play defense?

ARN TELLEM: Well, he's got a great jumpshot, but his defense -

GEOFF: Eh, that's okay, we can just blame it on the coach. Five years it is! Now tell me Mr. Tellem, my owner told me to watch & study the movie "Major League," have you seen it? Is it any good?

"Where it stands right now, the premise would focus on the inner workings of the Kings' organization," Kings spokesman Troy Hanson said.

I haven't heard anything new about it. This thread is from November - you know back BEFORE we were firmly entrenched in the cellar?

If you read my last post above, you'll see it was merely a concept then.
