Race to the Bottom thread

you're a year off on berry though (whose father is still alive). ricky took his own life during the offseason preceding the 1989-90 season after winning ROY (over 40% shooting threes) after the 88-89 season.

Yeah, I remembered that he passed in 1989, just forgot that it was before the prior season. Regardless, the point still stands. The loss of Berry was a much tougher loss than any of the 1990 failed draft picks.

Also, wrt Lionel Simmons, his 4-year college career had nothing to do with his short NBA career. Like I said, he developed a chronic knee issue.

just for the purposes of "discussion", wouldn't you agree that an extra four (as opposed to one) year(s) of "college basketball" puts a certain amount of strain on the body (especially "joints") which might lead to a shorter "pro" career (than if they had only played one year of college)?

specifically, simmons played four years of college, then four years as a pro (starter - major minutes) before he didn't play much in his last three years as his knee got worse.

is it possible that he might have (in today's world) played ONE year of college, then seven (or more?) years as a pro before his knee problems began?

because THAT would be where his four year college career had SOMETHING to do with his short NBA career.

3 game winning streak, would not be good......they are in danger of going into 4th place from bottom soon, and possible 8th pick......better get their "Lin" on now. Do you want a great starter, or a great role player.......
I just want a great player, period. Starter or role player, I don't really care. Just find me someone great.

Top tier is 2-3 guys depending on who you ask, followed by another 5-8 guys who could potentially be future all stars. Obviously we want to get one of the elite elite prospects, but it's a deep draft.

Perry went into the '25 draft with no 1st round draft pick, and came out of it with Niq, Max, and future defensive superstar Cardwell. I like our chances even if we drop to 8.

Still rooting for lins though, don't get me wrong haha

No team deserves to get screwed in the lottery like Indiana does. They’re a disgrace.
Yup, the NBA should bar Indiana from getting a top 4 spot and lose their draft pick to the Clippers.

Really disgraceful that a team in the NBA Finals 8 months ago so blatantly tanks. They lose one player with injury (Hali) and they go from NBA Finals team to the Washington Generals overnight! They should lose draft picks or Rick Carlisle should be suspended for some games next season.

Next week on Dynasty Building - The San Antonio Way, watch team doctors find new and interesting injury claims for Pascal Siakam!

"Say, Jim, has anybody ever tried 'DNP - Razor Burn' to sit a guy?"
"It just might work!"

It’s a little difficult for me to get too worked up about the Pacers shenanigans when I recon were doing it too. Just not as good at it but at least maybe less obvious.
I just hope even if Indiana does end the season with the worst record they get bumped back to the five spot. Otherwise, for now anyway, im confident Perry knows how to evaluate players, team needs and a good player will be available.

That's what we might cal a statistical gradiant. The higher up you pick, on average, your likelihood of a great player goes up. I certainly care on a great starter vs a great role player - that's like Webber vs Barry.....' boiled down' I'm in the AJ camp - the team needs to swing for AJ - and that's probably #1 pick to be able to.....he has the tools and looks like could be athletically dominant in NBA.

Wondering if the tanking penalties are in the works, specifically the revoking draft picks.

i did not realize that jontay porter's lifetime NBA ban was based in part (there was another game where this also happened) on a game played with sacramento, where porter set bettors up to win by taking the "under" on his personal stats for that game - then feigning an injury three minutes into the game and not playing any more (in that game).

now THIS is a LOT more important than "tanking".

Porter was banned from the NBA for life in April 2024 for leaking confidential info and manipulating his performance for betting, including a March 20, 2024 game against the Sacramento Kings where he played only 3 minutes before feigning illness to sit out. He intentionally hit the "under" on personal stats for that game, thus making the payout on that bet the biggest one of the night (for draftkings).

this just came up on a story on npr - since i hadn't realized that sacramento was involved in 2024 (until now), i figured i'd post it - it might go better on the catch-all thread (things which don't need their own thread), but what the hey.

All it takes is lottery luck. No way to improve your chances there if we stay in the bottom few spots pre-lottery.

You know the ridiculous thing about Indiana tanking so hard is that the bottom 3 teams have the same odds of getting a top 4 pick and their first round pick is top 4 protected from the Zubac trade.

It’s going to hurt so much more for Indiana if they wind up with the worst record and don’t jump up to a Top 4 pick in the lottery. They are going to gift the Clippers the #5 pick and Kingston Flemmings for the 29 year old Zubac. That would be poetic justice

Yes staying in the bottom 3, however the lowest bottom pick has a higher guarteed floor pick as a bonus....so really they should be going for the bottom - end of story, and the Wizards and Pacers are both game ...... you saw Bam going for 83pts in a shamstastic game, with the Kings doing themselves absolutely no favors losing head-to-head to the NBA-fined Pacers for conspicuously not trotting out their best lineup.. Will the Kings pickup AJ at #5, no, at #2, perhaps but probably not, however picking guarteed #5 vs say guaranteed #7 will make some difference. in selectability.

Here's an interesting article on rating best and worst players at each draft position in the last 10 drafts:

We play two against Brooklyn plus we likely win against Utah. Odds are we end up 4th. The wins against Chicago, Memphis and Dallas were killers. We were doing well then completely spit the bit by earning pointless Woss’s.
They could still pick it up, but not with optimal odds.

Yes, but I was responding to the post about getting #1 post-lottery for AJ. That's all luck.

Yeah this is the silver lining to us (likely) dropping out of the top 4. All of Perry's rookies look like keepers.

Honestly, I'd rather have Perry at 10 over our past 3 GMs with a top 3 pick. Hell, I'd rather have Perry at 10 than Vlade with #1, because lord knows he'd find a way to **** that up.
You can’t assume that when we are playing against teams that don’t want to win. It’s like assuming summer league guarantees success and we have seen that before.

Sadly this team will likely have the 5th or 6th seed going into the lottery. Time to start looking at Ament if he falls that far.
