Q & A with Peja Stojakovic

Q & A with Peja Stojakovic

He was gone, and then he was back. And after it was all over, with Kings forward Peja Stojakovic being involved in a nearly done deal for Indiana's Ron Artest that fell apart by Tuesday night's end, he reflected on the chaotic day in a phone interview with The Bee.
Q: Peja, it's got to be one of the strangest days of your life. How are you holding up?
A: I accepted it pretty good, but I feel even more disappointed now. I mean, I guess it's business, and the NBA, and that we all have to accept that that's the way it is.
Q: It sounds like once you heard you were traded, you accepted it, but once it fell through and you were left in the middle, that was tough.
A: I had my mind set. I found out through the TV that I was traded, and then coach (Rick Adelman) called me, and (Kings president of basketball operations) Geoff (Petrie). I understand, and I had my mind set. I had my flight scheduled. I had prepared myself, my family for that. And then a little bit before the game, I heard (it was off). It's something I've never experienced in my career, so I guess I have to deal with that. I don't know what to say. I guess there's nothing within my control anyway, I guess.
Q: Had you caught wind of this trade at all? The other day, when you were saying that you wanted to be with the Kings for life, was there any part of you that thought this might happen and wanted to make sure your bosses knew how you felt?
A: We heard rumors before. I heard the rumor again this morning, but I never thought this was going to happen because I'd been hearing this for so long. And I said, 'If it's going to happen, it's going to happen.' I prepared myself a long time ago for that. If it happens, it happens, and it's something that I have to deal with. It's the NBA, and we are professionals. That's how I feel today. I told the coach, I understand and I guess the team is moving forward, I'm moving forward. It's a first time for me and for them.
Q: But what now, you know what I mean? This thing could still happen.
A: I don't know what now. That's a good question. I don't know. I feel, I guess, like what Geoff told me, I'm still with the Kings. It was a little bit different, a little bit frustrating right now, especially right now when I'm back.
Q: Did you watch the game? Were you sitting at the hotel room watching the game?
A: I wasn't watching the game. I was in the hotel, but I wasn't watching the game.
Q: If nothing happens tomorrow (Wednesday), and no news changes, are you going to go suit up and play the Knicks?
A: Do I have any other choice?
Q: Other players have told people who they wanted to work for.
A: You tell me, am I like (that), or what am I? I don't know. I'm a professional, and I'm going to be that way and that's the way it is. I guess I'm with the Kings as long as they want me to be, and I'm going to do my job as best I can right now in this position.
Q: You had said you were watching TV today. Was that the Maloofs' interview on ESPNews?
A: Yeah, that's how I found out I was traded. I found out through their speech that I'm gone. They almost said it (was a done deal). I don't know what to say. I believe ... I don't know. I feel different. I feel weird. I don't know how they feel having me back. I mean, I wasn't gone, but they decided, made a decision to trade me, then suddenly I'm back. I don't know. You should ask them how they feel. I feel weird.
About the writer:

It's a weird and tough situation, I feel for him. But, as I thought, he sounds like he's pouting through the whole interview. The "Do I have any other choice" to the question of will you suit up if you have to, tells me all I need to know.

Can you blame him?

I can't blame him for thinking this whole situation sucks, because it does. But, you don't say "Do I have any other choice". If he wants to be the true professional, as he says he does, then you say I will suit up and play. I'm still a member of this team as long as I'm here and I will give 100% while I'm here, and 100% if I go somewhere else.

How can you not blame him. He brought this trade on himself. If he would have shown some heart and desire this year and not played pee poor, we wouldn't be having these talks. I have no sympathy for him. He gets paid millions to play a game, so what if his feelings got a little hurt. What a tough life, his feelings get hurt, he gets traded to another team, he shoots a basketball again, he makes millions again. Again, no sympathy.

In a fantasy world that would work. I think his anwers were classy and spot on.

He could have been like Ron Artest on the other hand and refuse to play.

I never want anything bad for the Kings, but it is comments like this that make me wish Ron does come here and screws up so badly that we are all left scratching our heads thinkign "why the hell did we do that trade".

and all the people that want him - would deny it and say - they never wanted it in the first place

Comments like this. Is Peja playing well? Did I miss something? Again, he brought this on himself. Poor play=Chopping Block.

This is sports entertainment. Keep that in mind. Peja was no longer entertaining.

I'm not saying he should be traded strictly for Artest. I'm saying he's set himself up for a trade.

Even if this all blows up, it still needed to be done. It can turn out very good or very bad. Either way, you do it. I'll be the first to step up and say it didn't work out if it doesn't. But, not in 2 weeks. Possibly by the end of the season, but that would be the earliest if not into some of next season.

or he comes here and helps turn this team around and you are left thinking, "why was I ever against him coming here"<<<<<<<<<you don't need to answer that;)

I'll just post in Any Questions? thread when that time comes and play dumb ;)

I don't think you could post an Any Questions thread for one game from Artest. He would require a few more games, maybe a season, because there would surely still be questions.

You are right, that bastard. He probably talked Ron into refusing to play for the Kings.

we can say same thing for brad miller (for example)....Is he playing well?....half team is set for trade....(again I would trade biby for arenas in a sec) and kings are far from entertaining........now maloofs decided to trade peja and that's ok.....for artest and that's ok too.....they knew who is he but suddenly they got scared in terms how to deal with such idiot and trade has been rejected.....they should complete trade than talk with him......

Also, "I'm not saying he should be traded strictly for Artest"...c'mon few threads below you were looking to buy his jersey and you want this moron in sac no matter what

Peja will suit up and play. But, expecting him to come up with the "perfect" response in a really screwed up situation is not realistic. This situation has been a disaster. Peja finds out he's traded by watching the Maloofs jokingly hint at it on TV in every way possible without just saying "we got rid of Peja and we couldn't be happier". So he reconciles himself to moving his family, moving away from his pregnant wife until she can follow him, and uprooting his entire life. Then, just when he's used to the idea, it's no, you're staying in Sac, not because the Kings decided they want you, but because Artest doesn't want to be in Sac... and, by the way, the Maloofs are still saying they're not giving up on the deal and they'll work on it tomorrow.

Professional or no professional, Peja has feelings. Expecting a textbook answer under these circumstances seems a little unfair.

Great point! It is so sad to read this but it's 100% true...

Sorry buddy. This happens all the time when someone gets traded. They here about it somewhere else before they get it from the team. Why you may ask?? Because, they want to make sure a deal is done. Also, deals are announced regularly before every little detail is done. Also, remember the Kings organization did not announce it. It was broke my ESPN. ESPN jumped the gun on the deal being done.

The only mistake that the Maloofs made was going on that ESPN internview right before the story broke, and saying basically no comment. Which means something is going on.

Try to look at it from Peja's point of view. he is not playing up to his standards and injuries are a part of it, but perhaps its because he shows no hustle/effort on the court from what i've seen. He probably feels like he deserves a chance to redeem himself from his pee poor effort/shooting/everything else and maybe he wouldn't be feeling direspected if the maloofs decided to call him first. It seems like the logical idea to call your own player first doesnt it. This is a huge mess that needs to be cleaned properly. And no way do i want artest on this team unless he swears by whatever holy book that he promises not to act like a 3 year old and that he doesnt rap at halftime.

At this point the only way to clean it up it so to do the deal, and ship Peja off like he was originally supposed to be. Then he isn't here and you don't have to deal with the awkwardness of him still playing for the team.

There are other deals, perhaps someone else called Petrie and said he had a better deal than artest and perhaps thats why the trade got canceled. Wouldnt it be great if we could get someone like Pierce for Peja straight up.

Wow some people will twist anything. Pedja DOES have a choice. Ron Artest is an example of a player who's made the UNprofessional choice many times over.

I could have made a similar statement to Pedja's and meant it as a rhetorical question. I find out my employer doesn't want me anymore, but my family depends on me to bring home a paycheck. Do I pout and quit on the spot or do I do the responsible, adult thing and do my job until I can find another job? In other words, I'm a professional. I behave like a professional, that means I have no choice, but to be a professional, that's the kind of person I am. Simple. A simple ethic that is totally foreign to Artest.

salaries aren't even close.

and, no, the reason the deal was cancelled was not because there's another deal immediately on the table. the deal was cancelled because the kings got cold feet at artest's desire to avoid sacramento.

I really don't understand this logic. I can find no rational reason for Pedja to intentionally play poorly this year. How in the world is this going to make anything better for him, when he's about to enter the most important contract negotiations of his career? If he was only concerned about himself, he would be doing everything in his power to show what he's worth.

it doesn't have to make sence al long ai it gives the opportunity for some people to put this one on Pedja too.

I'm almost completely certain that it was a rhetorical question. But, that's pee poor attitude. I found about the trade on TV, WHAAAAAAAAA, my feelings are hurt WHAAAAAAAAAAAA. Seriously people get traded in the NBA ALL the time and they find out about it through media before the team can get to them. Why?? Because, the team doesn't talk until something is done. None of this was leaked from the Kings camp. It was all from the Indiana camp. The only mistake the Maloofs did was agree to an interview right then. They should have agreed to it after it was a definite. Then they may have had a chance to get to Peja first.
