Don't Make Me Use The Bat
I figured, sure -- why not? Came in a bit late (debate) had a few distractions, but for what they are worth for htose who did not get to watch:

New Unis ( A- ) -- me liked. Looked snazzy. The deep/bluish purple rather than the violet weenie stuff. Aggressive darty flourishes. I have never shown any hesitation in ripping crap unifroms if we have them, but these looked nice. Road at least.

Salmons ( D ) -- obviously got confused and thought he was coming off the bench. Night long struggle with the Blazers not letting him get all the way to the hoop, and he was making a lot of late decisions whether to throw a midair pass or force up an uncomfortable shot. Wonder if teams are onto him? Of course the Blazers have themselves a whole lot of nifty frontline beef to protect the hoop with.

Moore ( B- ) -- played a solid first half in which he substantially resembled Mikki Moore. Quite active. Quite invisible on the glass. Just got overpowered by Oden in there who has bulked up and looks about 2 Big Macs from a full Shaquille O'Neal. Also proved that he was in midseason fouling form, collecting 4 in just 14 minutes and sitting out the bulk of the second half therafter.

Hawes ( F ) -- just looked awful out there. If I wanted to find a positive I would say that he showed good passing instincts (of course), both out of the douhble and just in the normal offense. If I wanted to find a negative I would just point to everything else. That finesse tag Reggie dropped on him last year? Never did it look so appropriate as when he got matched up on Oden, who just bullied him inside. Meanwhile Spencer was still showing no shot selection and just chucking up long turnarounds, threes, making shaking decisions...bad showing. I'm thinking it was probably that conditioning test.

Cisco ( B+ ) -- Got the start at OG, and by the time I switched over to the game was in a very nice rhythm, if not quite dominating the game, then at the least being the best player on the floor, or at least our best player ont eh floor. Worth noting that that all pretty much stopped at about the same time everything else did for us. Chicken and egg maybe, but the Blazers called a timeout, ramped up the defensive pressure, and we collapsed. Cisco was rarely heard from therafter.

Udrih ( C ) -- aggressive but not terribly effective in his minutes out there. Was forcing a lot of action, but not making much happen. Also hit the floor an uncomfortable number of times for a preseason game -- hey Beno, you have a rep as injury prone, and we really need you given what's behind you on the depth chart. Cool it. Gets dropped a half grade here for repeatedly getting burned by Sergio Rodriguez at the three point line.

Now the interesting peeps:

Greene ( B ) -- got off to the dynamic start and had me going, hey maybe this kid isn't as far away as I thought. Soared high for a tip finish over the back of Travis Outlaw, then came back down and drained a three. Even made a nice give and go type pass (a rumored weakness). But quieted down thereafter and turned in a good debut performance (I'll take 18ptys for a debut thank you very muhc) -- scoring in a variety of ways (from the line, a post up move, the tip, threes), but not doing much else out there for us. Showed good athleticism, blocked a shot with it, and the defense did not look nearly as horrid as Reggie seemed to be implying last week. But still ended up with a 4-11 night, and not much on the stat sheet beyond points (18pts 2reb 1ast).

Thompson ( C+ ) -- got off to a dyanmic start himself -- in fact if you want to be excited about our rookies, just watch the 2nd quarter...and then turn off the TV. ;) Hit a smooth turnaround jumper, then showed a very quick first step for a big guy, and on the other end was winning the defensive battle against Shelden Will...we, I mean Ike Diogu, another powerful but undersized PF. Was using his superior length and challenging nearly everything. But as mentioned, maybe its best to turn the TV off after that. Because while Thompson never looked awful, he got quiet and irrelevant along with everybody else. Got worked by LaMarcus Alrdige, who interestingly looked to be a little bigger -- interesting just in that they are listed at pretty much the same size, and Aldrige is rarely confused wiht a muscleman. And then did not even do as well against Diogu late, who used his superior muscle to bully Jason out of the way. Good start, flashed some of what he can do, and clearly belongs in the NBA. Hard to say much more than that off this performance.

Brown ( C ) -- struggled to run the offense from the point and made some selfish shot decisions. Of course spent a lot of his time playing next to Bobby Jackson, so maybe he wasn't the point at all, but rather the shooting guard. In any case good athlete and moved the ball up and down the court quickly, but results were mixed when he got there. Knocked down a couple of jumpers late to show solid shooting touch, but had a lot of trouble finishing inside.

Williams ( B- ) -- looked more active than last year, particularly on defense. In limited minutes in fact looked to be our best match with Oden, doing the old Malik Rose on Shaq bit, and banging with him power on stubby power. On the other end continues to look horrid. His one hit was one of those surprising smooth 17ft jumpers, but everything inside was just a struggle.

And the not quite so interesting grades:

BJax ( C ) -- well, welcome back Bobby. Only player on our team that passed, or at least passed leading to made shots (3 of our 10 assists -- glad we fixed that passing issue we had from last year). But unable to really impact the game much, and at times looked a little lost out there surrounded by the kiddie corps. Lost a half grade for getting burned a bit on defense as Portland's guards began to have an assist party (note: they had 32 assists to our 10).

Ghost of KT ( INC ) -- had enough minutes to get graded, but not enough significane. Call it a D maybe if you must grade him. In his first stint picked up fouls while trying to wrestle with Oden (not his man, but Kenny was in there doing the chihuahua thing). Then his second stint corresponded with one of our worst stretches of ineffective play. Never got ont eh glass, scored, or did much else of note.

The cup of coffeeers:

Jones ( INC ) -- pretty decent athlete, forced a bit, and likely did not have the sort of performance he needed to make it even to the next preseason game

Zhang ( INC ) -- hope you enjoyed your American vacation. Next time may I suggest New York or Miami or San Francisco rather than Sacramento as far as vacation spot?

Felix ( INC ) -- cannot even tell you what he looks like

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Special Grades for poor deprived At&T Universe customers:

Rudy Fernadez ( A ) -- I'm in man love. Kid looked amazing out there, and dropped brilliant pass after brilliant pass to really power the blowout and send the crowd into a frenzy. If he turns out to be the real deal wiht all the other young talent they have up there...

Greg Oden ( B+ ) -- if he stays healthy is going to be a monster. Just absolutely physically huge in there, and on several plays reminded me a hell of a lot of young Shaq, just ripping the ball away and saying "Ball mine! Me eat!" and then able to explode up and dunk easily on both sides of the rim. Didn't dominate every play, but clearly already a force.

Blazers crowd ( A+ ) -- ridiculous showing for a preseason game. They have a potential dynasty in the making, and its like Arco '99-'00 up there at this point. team isn't elite yet, but everybody is drooling over the future. Were sold out, giving standing O's. Amazing.

I liked bobby brown he showed good passing, quickness and a good shot i know its only preseason and k-mart didn't play but the kings looked confused and that falls on reggie's coaching

I really like Garcia.. Like as in he should be our starting SF next to Martin at SG. He is just so dang fast out there on the floor, and plays well in an up tempo setting.

Unis: Rockets-ish but in purple

I had the game on, but was distracted at times. The things I noticed:

Oden looked huge, and looked like he could be Jason Thompson's dad. The defensive stance Hawes had to take against Oden on one play was ridiculously sad. Garcia looked good and aggressive. Donte put up 18 on 4-11, but rebounding will make or break him.

Other than those things, what I noticed most was how similar this team is to last years. Dribble and slash into the paint: crap, nowhere to go, let me pass out to a player that isn't open. Player catches the ball: I'm not open, let me drive it into the paint again, crap I'm not open but let me throw up a shot. These players have no idea what they're doing. The offense has looked so broken these past few years. Even though it's a pre-season game with a young team, it's still discouraging to see the same things we saw last year happening.

good to see the grades, was at university so my perception of the games coming off watching the highlights and looking into the box scores.

thanks for the grades. the 32-10 assist edge to the blazers in the box score just depressed me for the rest of the day. and fernandez looked good from the highlights; must be a great time to be a blazers fan.

on a side note, are preseason games being shown on a free preview of league pass in NYC (i'm back in NYC for a few months)?

Hawes did pull down 6rbds, Donte is a great player to have in a youth movement, and my boy JT. it wasnt that bad for a new "Strong" offense.

I'm confused about the grades for people with U-Verse. I just started with U-Verse, because I bought a new home with fiber to the premise. I watched the entire game on Channel 767 Comcast Sports Net. So...why wouldn't have I seen all the players play?

I am in Sacramento, but I have CSN Bay area, CSN West, and one other. I was watching on CSN West.

My only concern is there is no HD equivalent for the channel. If I can't get the Kings in HD I will switch. Although the Maloof Sports and Entertainment thingie before and after the game looked to be in HD. So, I'll have to wait and see about that until the first home game.

no away game is hd. plus preseason i dont think is at all.

Yea. I understand no away game is in HD. That's why I was going to wait for the first home game. What I meant is on Comcast there is an events channel that the Kings utilize for HD broadcast. I spoke with an ATT rep and they do not have one, just channel 767 as Comcast has channel 34 which is the non HD channel.

So, what I meant was when the games are broadcast in HD will the non HD channel actually carry the HD signal or not. If not I'll probably switch to comcast, because having all games in standard definition won't cut it for me.

I felt the young guys came and played well... but Rudy Fernandez? He had some trick plays, but I still question his decision making and fundementals (just like in the Olympics).

Pretty fair grades, Brick. Some thoughts:

Hawes looked god-awful...but I'd give him an F+ for the dunk he had. I never expect Hawes to dunk/show aggressiveness/athletisicm etc, so it took me by surprise...

Speaking of surprise, Oden got more minutes and was pretty effective...I thought he wasn't going to be much of a factor this early on. Still pretty raw, a little out of shape, but man is he a beast.

Good to see Sergio get some burn...I've always been high on him and glad to see he improved his jumper.

Donte didn't look as "project"-like as I thought, but I did notice some of his defensive positioning/moves were quite amateurish/way-off. That'll come with experience, I'm sure.

The team absolutely collapsed in the second-half...frighteningly similar to the Muss-era Kings. From my view - and no I'm not joking - the collapse really began when Kenny Thomas was inserted...I kid you not. Coincidence? Maybe. I'll say this though: No more second half collapses & no more Kenny, please.

I thought the collapse started a bit before Kenny got in. Unfortunately, Kenny probably helped it collapse more lol. He had a nice steal against Oden though. Kenny has always been an underrated defender.

I hope he gets to play some more throughout the preseason and get rid of that rust. He hasn't been in a real game for how long?

Ummmmm... What?? It started before Kenny came in?? Nope! Watch the game over again.... Seriously, about 2 mins after Kenny came into the game , it turned into a layup drill for Portland... Once they saw that Sheldon and Jason were not at the 4 - 5 ( which BTW I think would be PERFECT for our back up 4-5)they really took off... Rudy fricking killed us!!!! Anyone like that pass between Jason's legs that Rudy did???

LOL Yes Kenny did have a really nice steal... BUT just like in Kenny prime form he threw a horrible pass to Bobby which fumbled off his hands and went right out of bounce.... Why is Kenny getting playing time??? Anyone??? I thought the Kings came to the agrement that Kenny does NOT fit into our system/team last year... Thats why he got benched after I think 5 games last year... I really really do not like Kenny at all..........

I have to agree. I looked back at my PBP and there was a definite shift at the KT arrival point, and not a good one.

I do not like to bash on players but I just do not see a role for Kenny Thomas on the Kings any longer in any way, shape or form. He is the final holdover from a period in time most Kings fans would like to put behind us. He really needs to go...

I wonder why they abandoned the triangle so early... they ran it for the first few sets... I guess they are still working on it.

Hmmmm.... I don't remember it very well. But I do remember Kenny picking up 3 quick fouls out of nowhere. Which reminded of that Danny Fortson incident where he made an NBA record of fouling out in a minute. Lol. I also remembered Greg Oden looking like King Kong out there. And Sheldon had a nice move around Oden too.

I was surprised not to see Kenny take any shots though. I thought he was working on reforming his shot with some trainer last season. If he's not going to be able to compliment the Kings' offense then Reggie will probably sit him out this season too.

Hawes did awful.

JT look like a little kid next to Greg Oden but in the next couple years so will most of the NBA.

I'm happy with Greene and looks like he has a lot of potential.

Now, on to Portland...

I think just about all the guys here are in man love with Rudy F. Seriously, that man can play some ball.

Oden, Aldrige and Roy are amazing. I always have a team that I watch at the same time as I watch the Kings and I think this year it is going to be Portland.

As I stated during the olympics, Rudy F is a very good player and Portland landed a bonus with him. I wish he were on the Kings. The only reason I can see for playing KT is because we may have some trade talks going on, and were trying to show he can still play. Or not.

Got to agree that Hawes did not look good. He looked confused and completely out of sorts at times. It appeared to me that he was thinking about everything he was going to do, instead of just reacting. Hopefully he'll show better on friday.

I thought Bricky's scores were pretty fair, and I also was surprised by Greene's performance. It bodes well for the future, me thinks..

Do you remember in Kevin's rookie year, he did a behind the back pass inbetween a Spurs players legs into D. Songaila's hands for a slam?
