Potential Free Agent/Trade/Sign Tracker, '25-'26 Season

But again, that’s not what the rumors are. The rumored deal is Saric + Carter. The math works out to Kuminga’s deal being a max of $83.81 mil if that’s the case.

What Kuminga wants is only a part of this. What he’s being offered is just as important. Sure it was rumored he turned down a 5 for 150 deal. If that’s is actually true, he gambled on himself and made a poor choice in the end (similar to Schroder turning down the Lakers big offer).

And I’m not convinced the Warriors are jumping at the chance to sign Kuminga to an $83 mil contract. They made him that rumored offer before they had Butler. They now have a lot of money tied up in their key guys. The calculus has changed. They live in a different world than they did when the originally made that offer to Kuminga.

Maybe that says something about the rumor as is then? We've also heard rumors of Monk being involved somehow. The one consistent rumor is that Kuminga is seeking a deal in the 30 million range.

https://sports.yahoo.com/article/jonathan-kumingas-massive-contract-demand-071308179.html

Unless he budges then that literally takes precedence over all of this process. He would simply in a worst case take the QO (which I think the Warriors want him to do) and then opt for unrestricted FA next offseason. If Kuminga was willing to take 18 million in his first season then I can't see how a team like the Kings with the MLE available wouldn't be able to put pressure on the Warriors with that. If the Warriors "didn't really want him"? They wouldn't match. Simple as that.

I just wouldn't underestimate the size of the A-holes the Warriors can be when it comes to business. Remember how soiled the Moody situation got but the Warriors ended up getting their way after treating him like trash too. I don't think an organization like the Warriors thinks they can't convince someone they were just trying to help them the entire time with a little "tough love". haha. The Warriors have set their cap up pretty specifically to the point that after the '27 season they're pretty free and clear and Draymond probably opts out after this season anyway. Are they afraid of paying the tax or being over the apron for 1-2 seasons? I guess we'll see.

At least it will show all. If the Kings are in 10th-12th again and they don't see that as a sign of stagnation then there's no fixing it. If they are in that range then I fully expect a rebuild if there is any truth to Perry running the show. If he is and his choice is to run the same path to nowhere then it's a matter of time. This is also on Doug and the young guys. If a Kuminga deal is DOA and Carter is on the summer league team, he better be playing to turn this franchises opinion of him sideways and right straight up there ***. Then we know who he is.

Ya with this draft finishing 10-12 is disastrous a lot of guys coming out that look like number one scorers and would fit our young core. We shouldn’t need another mediocre year to know Sabonis/DDR/Lavine will lead you now where but play-in

The question is whether Kuminga wants to play for the Kings and how much he wants.

What he wants money wise is a question but as far as who Kuminga wants to play for it doesn’t really matter in this moment,

Only one team has the money to even negotiate with Kuminga without going through the Warriors unless Kuminga is ready to settle for just the MLE. That’s Brooklyn and they reportedly aren’t interested.

Which is why despite being a free agent you haven’t heard of Kuminga meeting with any teams or any rumblings about his destination preferences in regards to the teams pursuing him. He’s probably the most restricted restricted free agent in recent memory.

I don’t see him getting above Monk’s salary if a sign and trade in reached. If it drags out too long then he might have a choice between a few teams in signing an MLE. Kings might not be his choice then, but maybe so.

I think you’re conflating a few things with what I’m saying.

From our POV, it doesn’t matter if he wants $30+ mil per year if we’re not going to offer it. Just because you want something it doesn’t mean you’re going to get it. And just because you could have taken a deal that would have you making $30 mil a year in the past doesn’t mean you will get that same deal today. What’s more important is what is Kuminga willing to accept, and by reading the tea leaves, I think he’s very much open to a $20 mil/year contract especially if it’s going to be on a team that will highlight him more (giving him a chance to have a bigger payday next time around).

The strongest rumors out there suggest that the offer is Saric, Carter, & 2nds and that the Warriors are not interested in Monk which I don’t blame them considering they have Curry, Moody, Podz, Hield, & Payton (if they bring him back) to take up all of their guard minutes. On top of creating a log jam at the guard spots, he’d push them above the 1st apron as well. Monk for them just doesn’t make sense which aligns with the rumors (check and check).

So again, going off all the information we have, the offer is very likely Saric + Carter which means we’re offering Kuminga a $83 mil over 4 year contract (way less than $30+ mil per year). And if Kuminga wasn’t interested in that contract, making the Saric + Carter offer is pointless. By all accounts, the holdup is on the Warriors side (not Kuminga’s side). If Kuminga was the holdup, the convo would go like this…

Perry: Hey Mr. Dunleavy, I hear you’re thinking about moving on from Kuminga? We can offer you Saric, Carter, & 2nds if you can help facilitate a sign & trade for a $83 mil/4 years contract?

Dunleavy: That works for us! Let me bring it to Kuminga to see if he will sign that contract

Perry: Sounds good! Let us know what he says.

Dunleavy: Bad news. He’s not wanting to sign for anything less than $30+ mil per year

From here, Perry could have two responses…

Response #1

Perry:
Woah, that’s too expensive for our taste. Good luck with that! Let us know if he changes his mind and is willing to take a much lower contract amount.

Dunleavy: Sounds good. Will do.

Response #2

Perry:
That’s pretty expensive and lowers Kuminga’s value to us. We can revise the offer to be Monk for Kuminga which would allow us to pay him the salary he desires. Does that work for you?

Dunleavy: No, Monk would push us above the 1st apron and that’s not really worth it considering we already have Curry, Moody, Podz, & Hield at guard. Not to mention we might bring back Payton as another guard. Doesn’t make sense for us to make that trade.

Perry: Got it. Well let us know if he changes his mind and is willing to take a much lower contract amount.

Dunleavy: Sounds good. Will do.

But again, the information we have does not suggest this is the situation. It suggests the Warriors are holding up the deal because they want more value for Kuminga (not that Kuminga isn’t willing to take anything less than $30+ mil/year).

It sounds like we have a STANDING OFFER of Saric, Carter, & 2nds for Kuminga. If Kuminga has already turned down a $83 mil contract and wants something not even remotely close to what we’re offering, why is there a standing offer? What’s the point in doing that when the two sides are not even remotely close to agreeing on the contract amount? That suggests to me that the Warriors are the ones holding up the deal and trying to figure out how to get more value or ultimately dip into the aprons and resign Kuminga.

It’s a crazy offseason with all the financials and lack of interest for some of our players.
I thought for sure going into free agency that we could easily turn at least Monk, as he has what I thought a good contract and still relatively young, into someone like Herb Jones.

It has been reported.such as nbcaportsbayarea that Kuminga and Warriors (Kerr/Dunleavy) are meeting in Las Vegas during the summer league.

Hadn't seen it mentioned, but for anyone who thinks there will be a reaolution any time soon . . .

Today's report is that Golden State wants both Carter and Monk in return for Kuminga. Who knows what is real with all this reporting? But that ask borders on delusional, coming from Mike Dunleavy.

Well maybe im missing something but how much different for the Kings than the rumours of Monk to Detroit and Carter, Saric, and draft compensation to the Warriors.
Yeah it might seem like a lot but if Perry is intent on moving Monk anyways, it might be prudent to leave Detroit out of it and not include draft picks to the Warriors.
I don’t know if GS really wants to add two more guards though.

I’m not sure how the financials would work with that. I feel like we would have to take a guard back if they are adding two

@SacTownKid I sat down and went through the numbers more, and I believe my estimate of the max contract we can offer him is actually off.

I was using Saric’s salary. However, Saric can’t be aggregated in another trade for the next 2 months. This means that the rumored offer (Saric, Carter, & 2nds) would have to be a part of the Valanciunas/Saric trade. And if it’s a part of the Valanciunas/Saric trade, it means we’re actually sending out $15.32 mil (not $10.35 mil) which means we can legally take back a max of $23.57 mil as Kuminga’s 1st year. With 8% raises, that means we could offer Kuminga a max contract of $106.2 mil over 4 years (~$26.55 mil per year). Again, that’s just the max we can offer. We can always offer less in the S&T.

What’s interesting is if we expand the deal further to include a Schroder for Monk S&T (meaning we send out Monk, Valanciunas, & Carter and get Kuminga & Schroder back), that brings our outgoing salary to $34.12 mil. Since our outgoing salary is above $29 mil, the salary matching rules means we can take back 125% of what we’re sending out plus $250k. That means we can take back $42.90 mil in salary.

Schroder agreed to a $45 mil deal over 3 years. With 5% raises that means his 1st year will be $14.10 mil. $42.90 mil minus $14.10 mil leaves us with a max of $28.80 mil left over to offer Kuminga as his 1st year salary. With 8% raises, that would amount to a $129.74 mil over 4 year contract (~$32.43 mil per year).

Again, this is the max we could offer with the trade still being legal. Doesn’t mean we’ll end up offering that much. However, it looks like there are some options to get Kuminga to a $26.55-$32.43 mil per year deal if that is ultimately what Perry wants to offer.

That seems…unlikely.

That deal takes them above the 1st apron and leaves them with a very crowded backcourt…

PG - Curry / Podz / Monk
SG - Moody / Hield / Carter

And I would have thought that the Warriors would be looking to bring back Payton on a cheap deal as well which only makes that backcourt even more crowded.

I mean, thats fine. No different than us shipping Monk to DET in the initial ask.

But forget the draft capital if GSW are getting Monk too

Yes but it could very well be the determining factor in how he wants the process to go. Most players opt for unrestricted FA the next season.

I think Buddy and Podz played a lot of 3 last year.
They have Butler at the 3 now and he’s a high minute player. I don’t see how they could make the minutes work unless they’re committing to playing Butler at PF for a good chunk of his minutes which seems…unlikely.

Yeah, this would have be a sweet enough deal for the Warriors to do that which would make me think picks, 1sts and more than one.

Butler basically is a 4 now and has been for awhile. That's why kerr never played Kuminga with him and Dray.

I think their plan right now is to start Dray at the 5. Or maybe they "start" Post for like 15-20 MPG and Dray gets a majority of the 5

That doesn’t seem like a recipe for success.

To put it in perspective, Butler’s length measurements are about the same as Keon Ellis. Sure, he’s considerably stronger than Ellis, but he’s also not much athletically at this point (will be 36 at the start of next season). That’s a serious size disadvantage they’d be giving up every single game.

But let’s say he does split his time 50/50 between SF & PF next year. Last year he average 33 mpg with the Warriors. That leaves 48 minutes at PG, 48 minutes at SG, and 32 minutes at SF to be allocated, and these are the mpg of the remaining players from last year…

Curry = 32 min
Monk = 32 min
Podz = 27 min
Hield = 23 min
Moody = 22 min
Payton = 15 min
Carter = 11 min

That’s already 162 min right there when there is only 128 min available across those 3 positions. I guess you could just not resign Payton and leave Carter as a DNP bench guy which brings it down to 136 min. Maybe you then scale down Monk’s minutes to 24 min and go with a minutes rotation of…

PG - Curry (32) / Monk (16)
SG - Moody (12) / Podz (26) / Monk (10)
SF - Butler (16) / Moody (10) / Hield (22)

I guess? But again, you’re playing extremely small for a good chunk of the game. Payton would be out of the rotation (and I assume they would prefer to bring him back) and Carter is not iced out of the rotation completely.

It’s just a classic case of a log jam. I don’t see why a team would be eager to go into the 1st apron only to create this problem for themselves.

I think their plan is to acquire Horford who would start for them at C and play a good chunk of minutes there which means Green is playing a good chunk of minutes at PF and Butler is playing a good chunk of minutes at SF. That seems like much more of a recipe for success vs. playing 3 guard lineups that include a very small PF in that same lineup.

I mean, not going to argue the point, just is what they've did with Butler and what Butler has been for MIA the last few years. They played him at the 4 next to Bam.

Horf would be good, but Horf isn't someone I want to rely on for 25+ MPG at this point either. They also got to beat out a bunch of other contenders to sign him

I mean Butler played 56% of his minutes at SF with the Warriors last year so I was even being more generous yet the minutes still don’t work out.

Oh I’d definitely rely on Horford for 26-28 mpg. Still a very solid, impactful C in this league. And his combination of defense, shooting, and passing would work really well in their system (and next to Green).

They could also just be looking for a value add. I also think Monk fills a pretty huge niche on that team since none of their other guards are good at creating their own shot. They're stuck hoping Podz takes a leap in that department this year

Of course. It could simply be a value grab on their side, but it also takes them above the 1st apron. Team have been really hesitant to dip into that level. And considering the hesitancy we see, it would be even more peculiar for a team to do that while intentionally creating a big jog jam at the guard.

Now if the Warriors were adding a piece that took them above the 1st apron AND filled a position of need, sure I could see it. But this just doesn’t seem like the right move especially since that once they’re above that 1st apron, there are more restrictions when trying to trade which makes clearing the log jam they have created even more difficult.

It just wouldn’t be a smart move on their side.
