Possible Long Term Coaches?

Hall of Famer
First, welcome Keith. Hope you do well here. However, more likely than not, Smart is here as an interim coach until the offseason. What possible replacements might the Kings look to Pursue? In no particular order.

1) Keith Smart. Put his name in here, as if he does a good job and gains the respect from the players, he might be deserving of another year on the job.

2) JVG. Will take a lot to get him out of the broadcast booth. However, grew up down the road in Martinez, is a defensive minded coach who would command respect from day one, lay a solid foundation for our players to build on, and has the name recognition.

3) Jerry Sloan. Most are convinced he's done. In the Bee chat going on right now, Voison says word around the league is Sloan is not done coaching, is intrigued by the Kings talent, and prefers small cities. Might be my #1 target.

4) Larry Brown. Just saw a earlier today saying the Kings were rumored to be talking to Brown this past off season, and thought about replacing Westy with him before the season. Not sure if theirs still interest, or how long Brown would actually commit for. Also demands a lot of say in the organization. Still, name and success speaks for itself, and is a better option than most. Still wouldn't be a the top of my list.

5) Brian Shaw. Longtime assistant to PJax. Interviewed, unsuccessfully this past summer for head coaching positions. Might have some promise, and I'd label him a clear underdog in any scenario, but I expect his name to pop up.

6)Elston Turner. Longtime assistant to Adelman, who probably isn't far off from landing a head coaching gig somewhere. A possibility, and as a lontime disciple of Ricks, I'd wager he might have the making of an NBA head coach. Not sure I'd want to find out here though.

7) Eric Musselman. Just revived his coaching career in Puerto Rico, has previous head coaching experience, as is looking to get back into the game.

My #1 target would be Sloan, with JVG at #2. Voison is usually off in her comments, but not sure why'd she make something like this up. If there is any truth to it, I;d start negotiating now.

BTW, #7 was a joke!

Left out PJax and D Nelson because I don't think PJax is a possibility in the slightest, and I don't like Nelson at all.

He couldn't handle Deron Williams. Not sure Boogie is any better.

That said, he would be my first choice.

I think Deron was just as upset about the lack of moves by the FO as he was with anything Sloan did. When it became clear to Utah he wouldn't resign, things started going downhill. Not saying there wasn't friction there, but it wouldn't even enter into whether or not I would sign Sloan.

Sloan has always been known as a player's coach. One flare-up at the end of one of the longest tenures in NBA history doesn't change that.

We can only speculate until we know what our budget is. JVG is my first choice. Sloan would be perfect also. He'd have tyreke and boogie to work build his offense around

If Sloan is even slightly interested in our team, we should come out guns BLAZING in an effort to hire him.

Perfect place too. Small, quiet town. Loads of talent and he knows damn well how to shape talent.

Just imagining Reke/Jimmer learning how to run the pick & roll with Cousins under Sloan.

Just imagining Sloan handling tough personalities in the locker room.

Just imagining the structure, and solid foundation both offensively and defensively Sloan would bring.

I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but I can't stop smiling about it.

Maybe there's a tractor factory in Sac which can offer him discounts.

I don't know about Sloan. I think I'd prefer a younger coach (he's turning 70 this year... could he be anything more than a stopgap? would he be able to coach for 3+years?).

Jeff Van Gundy is the best choice I can come up with right now. Coach Cal is my #2. And I don't even think coach Cal would work. I'd put it at 50-50 ... but I want to watch that.

Some other interesting names:
Ettore Messina
Rick Pitino (maybe I'm serious ... sometimes I'm serious)
Brad Stevens ( my dark horse. Not that I think he would get it, but he's young and I love his approach. )

Let's just stick with Smart for a few days at least before starting another thread about another coach. If starting a "Fire Smart" thread is premature, then this is a close second.

The only winning coach for Kings was Adelman! Wow - The future isn't so bright as a Kings coach.

Is this in order of preference?

I was hoping for Brian Shaw before Theus/PW...and rumor was he would employ Robert Horry as lead assistant...yes THAT Robert Horry! BUT...Shaw has a great pedigree, respect, championship rings...and would bring Horry with him with obvious respect for being one of the most clutch players EVER!...And you'd have to love the irony! Who knows if Smart sticks...or who replaces him...I just hope the Shaw/Horry coaching staff gets major consideration.

Coach Calamari (mmmmm) - he already knows how to coach Evans and Cousins. I'd at least offer him the job if I were the Maloofs/Petrie. If he refuses, you definitely know you've got a problem with those players. ;)

Of the coaches rainmaker listed my choice would be Jerry Sloan. He is the most experienced and he would be an excellent teacher for the youngsters. The musical coaches has to stop some time.

They just announced on Khtk that the Kings have offered Smart a two year contract. Not confirmed yet, but thats the rumor.

I think that's it, Brick. Can the Maloofs even afford to hire an "elite" or "nearline elite" coach at this point?

Remember, they are still paying Westphal...

I think you go after Jerry Sloan hard. That or Phil Johnson his former lead assistant (if long-time Kings fans can forget his first stint with the team).

PS: Maybe Smart's two year contract isn't necessarily as the head coach, just guaranteed to be on staff regardless of who is brought in. Seems weird though.

As I've said since the day he ended his tenure at Utah, if Sloan is available, and the Kings haven't thrown EVERYthing they can at hiring him, they are failing Sacramento.

Now that Voisine's chat (? source?) says Sloan's interested, and the Kings just needlessly extended Smart's contract, I have to believe they don't recognize he is far-and-away the best possible candidate to turn this team around.
When John Stockton and Karl Malone retired, Sloan proved he can coach a bunch of no-names into an overachieving, playoff team.
His system is exactly the kind of stability this Kings team could thrive on, and I'm sorely disappointed the Kings aren't making serious moves for him.

I can't really imagine why you would do that...other than being cheap again of course.

They don't want the guys thinking they're playing under a guy that's only going to be here for a short time. This could end up costing them more money, good move IMO.
