Anyone been watching Poker Royale on the Game Show Network on Tuesdays? Something like a 6 episode series of a final table. This is actually a great show if you like pure poker. Not a lot of glitz and IMO it's just flat out better than the WPT because of it's lack of overhyped drama.
Don't get me wrong, I like the WPT, but only because of it's scale, and it's level of players. Pretty much the best of the best. But I just have a hard time with Vince Van Patten and Mike Sexton. They are just soooooo over the top dramatic that it drives me nuts. AKs is a good hand and all, but do I really need Vince to emphatically say, "Mike! He's picked up Big Slick. OMG, that's a HUGE hand!" Blah, it's not that great. No need to make it sound like pocket aces, sheesh.
Anyway, Poker Royale details action from the final table of a tournament on the new WPPA (World Poker Players Association), where top players like Chau Giang, Carlos Mortensen, and Kathy Leibert battle it out. And it's just a little bit of production, but no neon, or spotlights, or backlit pokertable. Pretty much just the cards and the players.
The host is a duo of Kevin Nealon as the color commentator, and Robert Williams III does the straight talk. Robert's is a world-class player, a PL Omaha specialist, and does a great job analyzing the play in a straightforward manner. Kevin has his moments of funny, but overall, I don't really know why they picked him for the job.
Check it out, if you get the chance. Tuesday nights, 9pm PST on GSN.
