Poker Thread V.2

New thread since the old one is buried more than 4 pgs deep.

Anyone been watching Poker Royale on the Game Show Network on Tuesdays? Something like a 6 episode series of a final table. This is actually a great show if you like pure poker. Not a lot of glitz and IMO it's just flat out better than the WPT because of it's lack of overhyped drama.

Don't get me wrong, I like the WPT, but only because of it's scale, and it's level of players. Pretty much the best of the best. But I just have a hard time with Vince Van Patten and Mike Sexton. They are just soooooo over the top dramatic that it drives me nuts. AKs is a good hand and all, but do I really need Vince to emphatically say, "Mike! He's picked up Big Slick. OMG, that's a HUGE hand!" Blah, it's not that great. No need to make it sound like pocket aces, sheesh.

Anyway, Poker Royale details action from the final table of a tournament on the new WPPA (World Poker Players Association), where top players like Chau Giang, Carlos Mortensen, and Kathy Leibert battle it out. And it's just a little bit of production, but no neon, or spotlights, or backlit pokertable. Pretty much just the cards and the players.

The host is a duo of Kevin Nealon as the color commentator, and Robert Williams III does the straight talk. Robert's is a world-class player, a PL Omaha specialist, and does a great job analyzing the play in a straightforward manner. Kevin has his moments of funny, but overall, I don't really know why they picked him for the job.

Check it out, if you get the chance. Tuesday nights, 9pm PST on GSN.

I'm not convinced of the mystique of Big Slick, BTW. I've lost a lot of hands with it where someone with a lesser pair just won't fold... I'd much rather have the pair of Kings. At least that way I know what I'm betting with. I'm not much on spec betting I guess...

;)

there is also a poker show on saturdays on upn 31 @ 10pm
also fox sports net has its championship plaza poker

Yeah, I'm pleasantly surprised by Poker Royale given that it's on GSN. They have that silly draw for a million gimmick at the end, but several hours spent on the final table is great!

The first episode, I wasn't so sure because it was a highlight show cutting the field down to the final table, mostly all-ins and such. Evy Baby was the commentator, and while she's a pro player and nice to look at, even her offhand comments sounded stiltedly read off a teleprompter.

Williams is great though. He has personality and great poker knowledge, and isn't afraid to question plays. It appears he'll be on the rest of the way for five hours of final table, minus the sweepstakes at the end. Big improvement over Vince: "He's not going to play that? It's SOOTED!" Nealon mostly just calls the play with some occassional light humor.

And Poker at the Plaza was just great. Daniel, Freddy and Ted Forrest going at it with blinds not a factor. Oh yeah.

I like watching and playing poker myself, I really like Danny Neugrateau(not too sure of spelling) that kid is really good.

Yea, the Poker at the Plaza was an awesome tourney. Negraneau even said it himself that it was one of his best tournaments ever. His reads on Freddy were just incredible, and worst off, Freddy knew it. Danny was clearly in his head.

I love Ted Forrest. He's just such a pro, and he's got scary talent. I don't know if you saw him in the Stud tourney in the 2004 WSOP? OMG, he put this one spooky assed read on Chad Brown, calling a huge bluff with just a pair of deuces! It was so crazy, because he started with a pair of deuces, and just knew Brown was on a stone bluff from the start, and just called him down the whole way! At the end of the hand, Chad smiles nervously and shows rags, then Ted just slaps down his deuces and grins. Very rock and roll, baby.

Absolutely. He's the guy who scares the hell out of all the other high stakes players in the cash games. It's pretty funny, I was watching one of those old WSOP's on EPSN Classic (early 90's) and they were hyping him as one of the "young up-and-comers"; I think he won three bracelets that year.

Although, Chad Brown as a poker player...well, he's a pretty good Z-list actor. ;)

And speaking of playing online, I was in a SNG tonight. And I won ... which made up for the two SNG's I bombed out of last night.

An SnG is a "sit-and-go" tournament. It's a mini tournament that you sign up for that range from 1 table, up to 3 tables.

Aside from having fewer entrants than a regular tournament, the reason they call it a sit and go is because it doesn't have a fixed start time, like a regular tourney does. Sit and Gos start as soon as the roster fills up. For example, a 2 table SnG has 20 seats, and as soon as 20 people sign up, the SnG starts.

Thank you for telling me I have not slept yet totally addicting SnG:mad:

AleksandarN - SNGs can get really addictive simply because the people generally play tighter and don't go all in on a pair of 4's or a 7-3 off-suit. It's a nice change from some of the tables...

Good luck!

And BTW? This is ALL AceKingSuited's fault. If he hadn't signed up with that name, none of us would have become involved.

;)

But, he's also been known to stake people on an occasional basis so they can learn to play in that type of situation.

Thanks, AKS...:D

I have an idea. We should all get together on the net(pokerstars.net) and play in a tourney to see how we do :) for play money or even real money

they have private tourneys we can host at pokerstars...give kings fans ppl a password...
Really? In one of the first threads about poker people said you couldn't do private tables. How is the private tournament setup?

I'd like to know how to do it for my own friends/family and of course for KingsFans members.

Not private tables, but you can host a private tournament. but actually, that wouldn't work since the tourneys they offer aren't freerolls.

Iggy

p.s. I am playing in a WPT satellite on sunday @ the limelight club on Alhambra Blvd and K St.

I just watched the first episode of "Tilt" and it taught me something valuable about my poker game:

I gotta get out of the kiddie pool and make some moves!

So, I assume you haven't turned on ESPN for more than two minutes any time in the last month? :)

A new dramatic series about poker, and as cheesy and over the top as you can imagine. I hoped it might be decent when I first heard about it, but it looks like it might fall into the "so bad it's almost good" category.

A dramatic series about poker?

Hmmm. I don't know if I can fit that in between Days of Our Lives, Passions, Jerry Springer and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

There just aren't enough hours in the day.
