Kurt Rambis
Born: February 25, 1958
Number: 30
Height: 6'8"
Weight: 213
Position: PF
Yrs w/Kings: 1992-93 (1 year)
How Acquired: Free Agent Nov. 1992
How Departed: Released Sept. 1993

Longtime famous dirty work roleplayer with the Showtime Lakers was aging and just playing out the string by the time he hit the Kings. Could still rebound a bit, and had quick sneaky hands on defense, but wasn't much else.

College and Pre Kings Career
After 4 years as a starter at Santa Clara University Rambis was selected in the 3rd round (#58 overall) of the 1980 draft by the New York Knicks, but was waived before the season, and ended up playing his first year of professional ball in Greece (amusingly Rambis was of Greek descent, and not only acquired Greek citizenship, but played basketball there under the name Kyriakos Rambidis).

He signed with the Lakers the next season, and began a love affair with Lakers fans as the hardworking scrappy dirtworker doing all the dirty work amongst all the stars on those Showtime Lakers teams (the nerdy goggles he wore on court became iconic). He would win 4 titles with L.A. in the 1980's, and when he was finally replaced as a starter by A.C. Green and his minutes were reduced, supportive Los Angeles fans started printing up signs that said "No Rambis, No Rings." He left the Lakers to sign with the expansion Charlotte Hornets in 1989 and put together the best statistical season of his career (11.1pts 9.4rebs) in an uncommonly featured role for the talent poor team. He would start to decline and eventually move on to Phoenix, and then finally the Kings.

Post Kings Career
After his release in 1993, Rambis returned to the Lakers to close out the final two seasons of his 13 year career where he'd began it.

Post NBA Career
Rambis's return to the Lakers paved the way for a smooth natural flow into a coaching career, and he began working as a Lakers assistant even before his playing career was officially complete. Over the next dozen years he would bounce back and forth from being an assistant coach and being part of the front office, with one successful little 1999 stint as an interim head coach thrown in for good measure. Twice in the 2000s Rambis was interviewed for head coaching openings with the Kings, and in fact was offered the job in 2009 but turned it down because he wanted more money and guaranteed years (Paul Westphal eventually accepted). Instead he accepted a position with the Minnesota Timberwolves, where his attempts to graft Phil Jackson's triangle offense onto an untalented squad proved disastrous, and he was fired two years later leaving his overall coaching record in three years standing at 56-145 .279. After the Minnesota failure he returned to the Lakers as an assistant, and now has followed Phil Jackson to New York and signed as an assistant for the Knicks in 2014.

Born: October 2, 1976

Weight: 190
Position: SG
Yrs w/Kings: 1990-00 (1 year)
How Acquired: 2nd rnd pick (#45 overall) 1999 Draft
How Departed: not resigned 2000

Second round pick in the 1999 draft finally got to play on the last game of the season. It would be the only NBA game of his career. In college he was a roleplayer who could pass and shoot the three. Who knows what he was in the pros, but apparently not much. In his only game he played 25 minutes, scored 5 points, and notched straight bagels in every other statistical category.

College
Robertson played all 4 years under Roy Williams at Kansas, and started the last two. But even in college he was more roleplayer than star, showing passing abilities and the ability to hit the college 3, but only averaging 8.3pts as a junior and 12.8 as a senior.

Post Kings Career
Robertson was not retained for a second season, and went on to a short 5 year career in the ABA and Europe.

Post NBA Career
After retiring in 2005, Robertson went back to school, got his degree, and went to work for Goldman Sachs Asset Management.

How Acquired: Traded (VAN/SAC) Feb. 1998 with Otis Thorpe for Bobby Hurley and Michael Smith
How Departed: not resigned 1999

Small school shooting guard acquired with Otis Thorpe at the trade deadline of the lost 97-98 season. He would play in 19 games down the stretch of the season and if nothing else show a surprising ability to hit the NBA three. It would be his last NBA action.

College & Pre Kings Career
Robinson played all 4 years at Western Kentucky University, and led them to the NCAA tournament the last 3 seasons of his career. He was taken in the 2nd round (#51 overall) of the 1996 Draft by the Vancouver Grizzlies and had a drab rookie season for them, averaging 4.6pts on .379 shooting. He was traded to the Kings midway through his second, and final, NBA season.

Post NBA Career
Robinson would play professional for another 6 years in various minor leagues and Europe, and retire after the 2005 season.

Thomas Robinson
Born: March 17, 1991
Number: 0
Height: 6'9"
Weight: 242
Position: PF
Yrs w/Kings: 2012-13 (1 year)
How Acquired: 1st rnd pick (#5 overall) 2012 Draft
How Departed: traded (SAC/HOU) Feb. 2013 with Francisco Garcia and Tyler Honeycutt for Patrick Patterson, Toney Douglas, Cole Aldrich and cash

An athletic power forward who unfortunately did not pan out despite being one of the highest draft picks of the Sacramento era (5th overall in the 2012 Draft -- only Pervis Ellison (#1 overall), Tyreke Evans (#4 overall) and DeMarcus Cousins (also #5 overall) were taken as high), Robinson was a spectacular leaper who overwhelmed weaker opponents in college, but lacked the bulk to bang with bigger NBA power players. His athleticism still served him well on the boards, but offensively he had limited range and was unable to create his own shot (more often resulting in a turnover), and defensively he lacked the strength or length to guard larger NBA players inside. In an unusual move for such a high draft pick, the Kings had seen enough by midseason of his rookie year, and traded him to Houston.

College
Robinson had been a reserve behind the Morris twins at Kansas (Markieff and Marcus, both also NBA players) for his first two seasons, but after they were drafted in 2011 he exploded onto the national consciousness with an impressive junior season (17.7pts 11.9reb) and as the story of family tragedy he had faced during his sophomore season (he lost both grandparents and his mother in the space of a month, and was left to care for his 8yr old sister alone) was spotlighted by ESPN. This led to his being taken 5th overall by the Kings, despite not even working out for them. Disastrously, Damian Lillard (#6) and Andre Drummond (#9) were both still available with the pick.

Post Kings Career
Following his trade to Houston, Robinson only lasted the remainder of the season with the Rockets before again being traded, this time to the Portland Trailblazers. He spent his second NBA season as a reserve with the Blazers.

Kenny Smith
Born: March 8, 1965
Number: 30
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 170
Position: PG
Yrs w/Kings: 1987-90 (3 years)
How Acquired: 1st rnd pick (#6 overall) 1987 Draft
How Departed: traded (SAC/ATL) Feb. 1990 with Mike Williams for Antoine Carr, Sedric Toney, and a 2nd Rnd pick

A lottery pick from early in the Sacramento era, Smith was a skinny defensively challenged score first PG out of North Carolina who performed adequately for the Kings but could never justify being taken just ahead of hometown hero Kevin Johnson (who was taken with the next pick, #7). Nicknamed "The Jet" because of his speed, Smith wasn't terribly creative as a passer, but was a competent mid to high teens scorer with three point range who gained fame later in his career as a roleplayer providing spacing for Hakeem Olajuwon in Houston.

College
Smith played 4 years for Dean Smith at North Carolina, taking a larger offensive role his senior season and averaging 16.9pts and 6.1ast.

Post Kings Career
Six months after being traded from Sacramento to Atlanta, Smith was again moved, this time to Houston, and it would prove to be his home for the prime of his career. For the next 6 years he brought the ball up and hit 3pt shots on kickouts from Hakeem at a deadly rate (shot .407 from three during his Rockets years), winning two titles along the way. In the first game of the 1995 Finals he hit 7 three pointers, including the game tying three that sent the game into overtime (the Rockets eventually won). He went into steep decline and by 1996-97 bounced through three teams in one year, and called it a career.

Post NBA Career
Smith's gregarious nature allowed him to walk right off the NBA courts and into an analyst's job with Turner Broadcasting, where since 2000 he has teamed with Ernie Johnson and Charles Barkley (and more recently Chris Webber/Shaquille O'Neal) on the Emmy award winning "Inside the NBA" halftime and post game show.

Position: SG
Yrs w/Kings: 1993-94 (1 year)
How Acquired: Free agent Dec. 1993
How Departed: Waived Oct. 1994

Undersized but very athletic shooting guard picked up by the Kings midseason in 1993-94, and waived at the end of training camp the next year. Smith was very streaky and athletically explosive, capable of getting hot from the perimeter and throwing down power dunks, but never consistently.

College and Pre Kings Career
Smith was a 4 year starter at Louisville, and was taken in the first round (#19 overall) by the Washington Bullets in the 1991 Draft. After a couple of non-descript seasons, he was waived early in his third year, and immediately picked up by the Kings. His career highlight was a famous 2-game duel with Michael Jordan in March of 1993, when in the first game of a home and home against the Bulls, Smith dropped a career high 37 points on Jordan. Jordan was not amused and came back the next night to drop 36 points on Smith...by halftime (he finished with 47).

Post NBA Career
After being waived by the Kings Smith played in the CBA and Europe for another 6 years, but never made it back to the NBA.

Position: PF/C
Yrs w/Kings: 1991-92 (1 year)
How Acquired: Free agent Feb. 1992 (10 day contract)
How Departed: 10 day contract expired

Career long 12th man passed through Sacramento on a 10 day contract in 1992. Undersized and not terribly athletic, Scheffler struggled to get off shots against NBA length, and the 2.3pts he averaged in his 4 games with the Kings actually tied the career high he would put up in any season.

College and Pre Kings Career
Scheffler played 4 years at Purdue, and in his senior season would be named Big Ten Player of the Year and Third Team All American. He was taken in the 2nd round (39th overall) of the 1990 Draft by the Hornets and began a remarkable career where he lasted 7 years in the league while never averaging more than 2.3pts or 5.8min a game. Must have been a heck of a nice guy.

Post Kings Career
After his 10 day with the Kings expired, he was picked up on another 10 day by the Denver Nuggets, then retained for the remainder of the season. He signed with Seattle the next season, and would somehow remain with them for 5 years as their 12th man right through the Payton/Kemp years of contention. After he was traded to Denver at the beginning of the 1997-98 season he would never play again in the NBA.

Post NBA Career
After a couple of seasons in the CBA, Scheffler called it a wrap on his basketball career in 1999 and became a representative for speciality foods.

Born: October 14, 1968

Weight: 260
Position: C
Yrs w/Kings: 1991-92 (1 year)
How Acquired: Traded Sept. 1991 (SAN/SAC) with a 2nd round pick for Antoine Carr
How Departed: Waived July 1992

Talented but immature giant who's career was hampered by chronic back issues and a long string of injuries. Despite good feel for the game he would never average more than the 12.1min he did for the Kings in 1991-92, and at 7'2" he still finished an 8 year career with a career shooting percentage of only .404. He ended up more well known for his infamous mullet haircut, which he called "The Lobster", than for his game itself.

College and Pre Kings Career
Schintzius had a decorated but controversial college career marred by the collapse of Florida's program amidst recruiting scandals, and numerous immature incidents by the big guy himself. Finally 11 games into his senior year he abruptly quit the team after clashing with new disciplinarian coach Don DeVoe (who rather unreasonably demanded that Schintzius chop his famous locks) saying that he was no longer willing "to sail under the authority of Captain Ahab". Such incidents caused a drop in his draft stock, and instead of being a Top 10 pick as earlier expected, the Spurs were able to nab him with the 24th pick of the first round in the 1990 Draft. He only averaged 9.5min as a rookie before being traded to the Kings for the steadier Antoine Carr.

Post Kings Career
After being waived by Sacramento Schintzius would go on to play for another 6 seasons in the league for New Jersey, Indiana, the Clippers and Boston, but rarely got off the bench, and never played a full season. He finished with career averages of 9.0min 2.7pts 2.5reb and only started 33 games in 8 years.

Post NBA Career
A few years after his NBA career ended in 1999, Schintzius would briefly attempt a comeback in the NBDL and USBL, finally retiring for good in 2003.

While still in the NBA Schintzius appeared in the Whoopi Goldberg movie "Eddie" playing a fictional Serbian player named Ivan Radovadovitch. After his basketball career was over he would dabble in business opportunities and do local commercials for a few years.

Illness & Death
In 2009 Schintzius was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. After two bone marrow transplants and several rounds of chemotherapy, he died from complications (respiratory failure) in 2012, at the age of 43.

Weight: 260
Position: PF
Yrs w/Kings: 2006-07 (1 year)
How Acquired: Free Agent Oct. 2006
How Departed: Waived Jan. 2007

Powerfully built and offensively talented, Taylor was also unfortunately butter soft, allergic to rebounding and physical play, had delusions of grandeur early in his career, and was basically finished by the time the Kings picked him up in training camp 2006 after the Knicks had waived him. He played sparingly in the first two months of the season, was waived by the Kings as well, and that was the end of his NBA career.

College and Pre Kings Career
Taylor played three years at Michigan, teaming with fellow widebody Robert "Tractor" Traylor to modest effect. He was taken in the first round (#14 overall) of the 1997 draft by the Clippers. After a rookie season spent as a reserve, Taylor rapidly emerged as a skilled but soft big man capable of averaging points in the mid to upper teens, and not giving you much else (in fact at 6'9" 260 he spent time at SF in his career so unsuited for big man play was his game). This did not stop his ego from growing however, and after his initial three year contract was up he told the Clippers that he would not resign with them, and tried to engineer an offer from the Orlando Magic, which never came. Instead he ended up signing a ridiculous contract with the Rockets, where he only started for one year before he began sliding backward into terrible contract status. As the contract wore down he would finally be traded by the Rockets to the Knicks, and finally end up with the Kings.

Post NBA Career
After several years off, in 2009 Taylor attempted a basketball comeback playing in the Italian leagues (his mother was of Italian descent), played in China for a year, and finally retired for good in 2011.

How Acquired: Traded (HOU/SAC) Dec. 2010 with cash for a conditional 2nd rnd pick (so conditional Houston did not get it)
How Departed: waived Jun. 2011

Small school shooting guard was an explosive athlete who needed to add more rounded skills to his game. All things considered he did not perform that poorly for the Kings during his tryout the second half of 2010-11, but was still waived after the season, and has yet to make it back to the NBA.

College & Pre Kings Career
Taylor starred at tiny University of Central Florida, and put up huge numbers as a senior (26.2pts 5.2reb), drawing the attention of the NBA. He was taken in the 2nd round (#32 overall) of the 2009 Draft by the Washington Wizards, but immediately flipped to the Rockets for cash considerations. He played sparingly as a rookie, and then was moved to the Kings early in his sophomore season.

Post NBA Career
Since being waived by the Kings, Taylor has followed the common path trying to get back in the league with stints in the NBDL, Europe and China. In 2013 he suffered a season ending knee injury just as the NBDL season got underway, and missed the entire 2013-14 campaign.

Marcus Thornton
Born: June 5, 1987
Number: 23
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 205
Position: SG
Yrs w/Kings: 2011-14 (4 years)
How Acquired: Traded (NOH/SAC) Feb. 2011 with cash for Carl Landry
How Departed: Traded (SAC/BKN) Feb. 2014 for Reggie Evans and Jason Terry

An aggressive and explosive scoring guard with selfish tendencies and a preference for an open court game, Thornton seemed to struggle whenever he was not starting and featured. Taking advantage of an injury to Tyreke Evans after he first arrived from New Orleans at the 2011 trade deadline, Thornton put together an impressive final two months of the season as a #1 option, averaging 21.3pts in 27 games. He was less dynamic the following year when having to share the ball and shots with Evans and Isaiah Thomas, highly erratic the third season coming off the bench, and finally looked lost and uncomfortable in his final season with the Kings as a roleplayer who rarely got to shoot in an Isaiah Thomas/Demarcus Cousins centric offense.

College and Pre Kings Career
After 2 years spent at a community college, Thornton transferred to LSU and was a high scoring guard in both his junior and senior seasons, averaging 19.6pts as a junior, and 21.1 as a senior. He was taken in the 2nd round (#43 overall) by the Miami Heat, but immediately flipped to the New Orleans Hornets for 2 future 2nd rounders who became Jarvis Varnado and Jae Crowder.

During his rookie season Thornton and fellow rookie (and now current King) Darren Collison took advantage of a major injury to Chris Paul to step forward the second half of the season and push the tempo to something more comfortable for both young players. When Paul returned the next season, and with the hiring of a defensive minded coach (Monty Williams), Thornton found himself back on the bench and struggling again until rescued by the trade to the Kings.

Post Kings Career
After the trade to Brooklyn, Thornton averaged 12.3pts on improved percentages the rest of the way as a Nets reserve. After the season, in July 2014 he was traded to the Boston Celtics.

Andre Spencer
Born: July 20, 1964
Number: 20
Height: 6'6"
Weight: 210
Position: SF
Yrs w/Kings: 1993-94 (1 year)
How Acquired: free agent Mar. 1994
How Departed: not resigned 1994

A true self made man in the NBA, Spencer was 28 by the time he made it to the NBA, and 29 by the time he passed through Sacramento in his 2nd and last NBA season. A 6'6" small forward out of little Northern Arizona, he went undrafted and spent years in the minor leagues and Europe trying to make it to the NBA. The Kings signed him to back to back 10 day contracts in March of 1994, then retained him through the end of the season. It was his last stop in the NBA.

College and Pre Kings Career
Spencer played two years in junior college before transferring to Northern Arizona as a junior. It was not until his senior season that he exploded and showed professional promise (averaged 9.8pts as a junior, 19.0 as a senior). Undrafted, Spencer would spend years in the CBA and Israel trying to make it the NBA, and finally began to receive nibbles in 1992. He briefly played for Atlanta in 1992-93, and as he did with the Kings the next year he caught on with Golden State on a couple of 10 day contracts late in that season.

Post NBA Career
After not being resigned by the Kings Spencer resumed his worldwide wandering, and during the next 8 years would play in the CBA, Spain, France, Israel, Japan and Argentina before finally retiring from basketball in 2002 at the age of 38.

Terry Tyler
Born: October 30, 1956
Number: 40
Height: 6'7"
Weight: 215
Position: SF/PF
Yrs w/Kings: 1985-88 (3 years)
How Acquired: Free Agent Nov. 1985 (under FA rules at the time, Detroit received a 1st rnd pick (turned into John Salley) and a 2nd rnd pick as compensation)
How Departed: Waived Oct. 1988

Durable veteran defensive minded roleplayer signed as a starting SF just after the start of the Kings inaugural season in Sacramento. Tyler was still a big leaper by the time he reached Sacramento and in fact participated in the NBA's first Slam Dunk contest in that first season with the Kings (he finished 8th in dead last). But he required a windup on his jumps and in general was explosive but not fluid. A college power forward, his offensive skills as a small forward were largely limited to a decent midrange jumper which he had developed and could hit a few of every game. His numbers sank over the next two seasons as age began to sap his legs, and he was waived in training camp 1988.

College and Pre Kings Career
A local Detroit product who stayed in the Detroit system all the way through the pros, Tyler starred at the University of Detroit alongside John Long in a pairing dubbed "Thunder & Lightning" (Tyler was Thunder). His coach at the time was none other than Dick Vitale, and when after Tyler's senior season Vitale got tapped to move up to coach the Pistons, he brought his two favorite pupils with him, using 2nd rnd picks on Tyler and Long. Vitale only lasted a little over a season, but Tyler provided defense and hustle for Detroit for 7 years before moving to the Kings, and was still the franchise's all time leading shotblocker until Ben Wallace passed him in 2009.

Post Kings Career
After being waived by the Kings, Tyler would sign with the Mavericks and play for one more year before calling it a career.

Post NBA Career
Tyler continued his basketball career for a few years in Italy, and then retired for good. He dabbled in coaching for a while, including a 2yr stint as head coach of Eastern New Mexico University, and then settled down as a youth counselor in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
