BOSTON -- The Boston Celtics have agreed to terms with forward Paul Pierce on a three-year contract extension worth almost $60 million, pending league approval.

Spokesman Jeff Twiss said Thursday that the team has worked out a deal with Pierce on a contract extension that would keep him in Boston beyond the 2007-08 season, when he has a player option for about $16 million.

Terms of the extension weren't released, but will reportedly be for three years and about $59 million. The NBA office must approve the deal before it can become official.

Also Thursday, the Celtics said Pierce is scheduled to have minor surgery on his left elbow in August. He should be ready for the start of training camp.

Pierce is a fantastic player, Celtics would be in total rebuilding mode without him for many of the next years.

Not sure how mucn Ron's would be, but we definitely can give him a nice extension or offer.

He may be a great player but is he really worth 40% of your teams cap?

"May be"? C'mon now, chap... I'd say the Celtics are smart to keep him, they have lots of pieces/potential pieces/young players also. Paul needs to get some help other than Wally, they obviously are going to try and do something.

I'd be surprised if they're idea for the team is just like "Yeah, were just gonna have a vet or two next to ya Paul, and let the kids develop next to ya... should have a fine rest of your career.".

Better question. Is he worth 40% of the cap for the Celtics???

I would say no, because they don't really have many options or opprotunities to build a contending team around him as it is. Even if they traded for AI I don't know if that would put them in a position to contend.

Great player, no question, but 20 mil a year? I don't know, I just don't know.

And Ron would probably ask for the MAX. And at this point, the Maloofs would probably pay him that. May not be the best thing to do but you never know...

Celtics have oppurtunities to improve the team - their roster is loaded with young talent and potential, a handful of which who have already shown positive things -West/Allen/Perkins/Jefferson/Gerald Green. Rondo no doubt will next season, IMO, Celts got a steal there.

Have to see if Ron asks for the max. Could take less to help the team, or will ask for close to the max/the max. Split on that.

Yes they do, but not how you spend the best years of your max salary players career. They have a lot of nice young talent, time will tell how most of them pan out, but you can't be half in-half out. Go young or go all the way. I wouldn't be shocked to see half of those young guys moved for a KG or AI if the deals are out there to be had.

Which is what I meant and mentioned here:

I agree. Go young or go all the way. Paying a star that amount of $$ and not making the playoffs is just plain crazy. These crazy numbers aren't helping the bonzi situation. :(

Yet, there is still 2 1/2 months left to make moves for the Celtics.

Bonzi's value is not to that of Pierce's. If so, we would of already had him re-signed ASAP. :p

Yeah, but Bonzi is hell of a player getting offered the MLE and everyone else is making their payday. I hope he comes back but I just feel he's waiting for another team to offer him more...kind of like a respect thing.

Actually I don't these big signings really have any impact on the Bonzi front. He has certain options. Most of which are seemingly drying up or never existed in the first place. He could leave for the MLE, but if they Kings are offering more, then he would be going back on his word that he wants to stay.

I think Pierce is really good but I think he'd be better suited (to win) to be in a new situation. If you're Paul you can't decline that offer though.

From the Celtics view, I would have traded his *** for something since he's been there so long and nothing has come of it. But maybe they can build around him. Did they make the ECF a few years back though, with He and Walker?

 The Kings offer is more than the MLE.

We just don't know how much more. Since Bonzi's agent made a counter-offer, we do know Bonzi would like more than whatever the Kings are offering. Looks to me like Bonzi's options are dwindling daily, unless its a S&T. And the Kings would have to agree to that.

Bonzi is a hell of a player, but he's not on Pierce's level.

what is the max can the kings offer ron?
Depending on picking the option for 08/09 season he will be 8 or 9 year veteran which means his salary can start at 30% of the cap with 10.5% increase at max.
So what salary cap will amount to in summer of 2008 or next one? Salary cap is counted based on Basketball Related Income (generally speaking how much the League earns). Last year they used a figure of 49.5% of BRI and it was 50.9mln. (they just used a set figure of 49.5mln. to not increase SC that much and make smoother transition). This year (and in future calculations) they used 51% of BRI and it amounted to 53.1mln. 51% of last year's BRI is 52.4mln which means if League's income won't suddenly increase by a large amount it's safe to say that increase in cap will not exceed 1 mln and salary cap will equal to 54 mln. in 08/09 season and 55 in 09/10 or something like that. So Ron's starting salary won't exceed 16.5 mln. though the limit is obviously pretty high.

That is kind of sad. I mean, I was REEEEEEELY hoping that he would get outta there some day and contribute to a great team. Oh well. Yeah, the Reggie compairison is pretty accurate.
